Oh how I love the month of May. We have both
the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness to have
an interest in. Everyone will have the
opportunity to pick a horse and then enjoy
watching the races having a horse to encourage!
We have planned a little Mexican event for
Cinco de Mayo, a special lunch for Mother’s
Day, and Barbecue Season begins with
Memorial Day, when we honor the veterans
amongst our residents. Jim Jordan will
entertain after Mother’s Day lunch.
Our entertainers this month are; Liz Saunders3rd, Ethan Stone-10th, Harry French-17th , Ken
LeRay-24th and Paul Ashley-31st. Many favorites
amongst them. Harry returns after wintering in
Florida and this is the last performance by
Ethan until after his second baby is born. He
takes a paternity leave until August.
I leave you with a favorite Mother’s Day quote!
Sweater, n.: garment worn by child when its mother is
feeling chilly. ~Ambrose Bierce

A smile was all she gave to me
Of course we were as happy as can be
Ah! I immediately raised my hat
And finally she remarked
I never shall forget
That lovely afternoon
I met her at the fountain in the park

People celebrate May Day in many
different ways. Did your church or
school have a special celebration?
A man loves his sweetheart the most, his
wife the best, but his mother the longest.
~Irish Proverb
Every year my mother helped me make
‘May Baskets’ filled with goodies to
deliver to school friends and neighborsDorothy
I don’t know how she did it. Raising 5
children with no electricity, running
water, no bathroom inside and chopped
wood to burn for heat. And no phone.Helen
My nursing school had a May Pole and
dress-up and classical music- it’s hard to
believe. – Chris
My school celebrated May Day- Helen
It seems like yesterday that Jimmy
Blacket (age 10) knocked at my door with
a beautiful basket of flowers on May Day.
I was so surprised- Bev
My English grandmother had been a
milliner for ladies in England. When she
came to this country she made beautiful
bonnets for her granddaughters. She also
made bonnets for our dolls- Laurie
My first school picked a May Queen and
a May Pole was erected. The older boys
and girls danced to music around the
pole- weaving the ribbons together to
make a plait around the pole. The school
piano was brought out to the playgound
for the teacher to play. – Carolyn
Tell me a story about your mother!
My mother died early when I was very
young-my aunt took care of me thru
grade school- Ada
My mother went to law school (Portia,
for women!) after she was married, and
passed the bar exam the year I was born.
She never went into practice, thoughJoan
My mother was a caring, loveable little
person- 5feet 2inches (My dad was 6feet
2!). She worked in an insurance office
and came home to prepare a home made
dinner every night , including dessert.
She took meals to my grandmother every
day. My grandmother lived upstairs and
was 87. My mother taught me to sew and
knit. She played poker at night with her
girl friends. She was a busy mother!- Bev
These words describe her-unique,
supportive, reliable and always lovingOliver
A strong lady! At 51, my mother was
diagnosed with thyroid cancer. At the
New York Hospital for cancer, much of
the gland was removed, and she was the
first on the east coast to receive an
experimental implanted radium seed.
Her voice changed and she had a big
scar. Still weak as she was, she asked me
to go with her to the next meeting at her
church’s ladies’ group. She lived to be
94- Corinne
There are many stories of my mother but
this is my favorite.
She came to this country from Eastern
Russia. As a foreigner she attended ‘night
school’ and taught in a one-room school
in Connecticut. We had a photo of her
pupils holding hands in a circle. She
loved teaching. When she left she
received a very laudatory letter from the
superintendent of schools in New Haven.
We have this letter still in our family.Milly
My mother loved me and I loved her.Her
name is Charlotte Stephenson Witter,
born 1892 in Hartford City, IN., the
daughter of Samuel and Martha
Stephenson who was a saddlemaker and
owner of a small leather goods store.
Mother graduated from Oberlin College
before WWI, studied at Columbia State
Teacher’s College and McGill. She taught
elementary schools in Texas. Mother
never raised her voice or judged anyone.Tom
My mother had a great deal of trouble
with me, but I think she enjoyed it.-Mark
Twain (and maybe Marion Wass!)
For about 15 years we lived in what was
known as a "cold water flat". What that
means is that there was no running hot
water. When we wanted some we had to
heat it up on the kitchen stove. This
stove was the only heat available to us.
My brother and I (he's 18 months
younger than me) slept in the same bed.
In the winter time, my mother would
remove the linen bed sheets and replace
them with woollen ones.
In the morning I would get out of bed
and go stand next to the stove to get
dressed. One time I got too close to the
stove and burned my stomach skin at
my waistline.
If it weren't for my mother, life for me
and for my brother would have been
terrible.
