THANK YOU for the honor of being elected Potentate of CAIRO Shriners for
2016. Your assistance this year with Membership ,Retention ,Restoration will be our number one goal. The annual meeting held on January 23, 2016 was very well attended.
We obligated two new members Gordon Pugh and Shayne Leggett. Welcome to
Cairo. Jim Burt was appointed our new Oriental Guide. Looking forward to working with
you and your Lady Tabatha. Vote was taken for CAIRO to join the RUTLAND
MASONIC ASSOCIATION which passed. I will keep you informed as this progresses.

Cairo Spring Ceremonial April 23 in Rutland. Please line up your candidates for
this fine meeting !! “BELIEVE” At our annual meeting stated that “BELIEVE” would be
the word of the year. When we all joined SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL and the mission of SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN that we could make a difference in a
life of a child !!!
Please take a few minutes and rekindle that love by “BELIEVING” we can
overcome our membership and trust challenges. Join us on the fourth Tuesday of every
month for the divan meetings. All are welcomed. There is a poem about two roads in the
woods, and I am taking the one less traveled by and just maybe it will make a difference
here at CAIRO SHRINE CENTER !!

Cairo Patrol and Drum Corp 2016
Many thanks to our past Chief Raymond Parker. Ray has been a very active
member of the Unit for many years. He was Chief in 1999 and again in 2009 .
Our 2016 Potentate Tom Ettori has joined a long list of Patrol and Drum Corp
Potentates. They include John Armstrong, James Wright, Gary Morse, Christopher
Corsones, Christian Hansen, Charles T Baker, and Pete Billings.
Our unit stands strong behind Tom. He has been a very hard worker for the unit
and deserves our help.
The 2016 Hospitality crew: Captain Brian Lawrence and his lovely Bride Julie
and Myself and my Bride of 30 years Kathleen, aka Kate. Many thanks to Brian, Julie
and Kate !! We pulled off the 2016 Annual Meeting and are looking forward to the next
challenge.
At the Annual Meeting Banquet some strong words were spoken about the Polar
Plunge!! I propose a unit challenge. Each unit that wants to compete will put in $100.
The unit with the most people in the water will win and have their $100 returned to
them. All other money will be donated to the Polar Plunge!
As always we are looking for members. Musical expertise is optional. A good
time is Mandatory.

Shriners Burn Awareness Week February 7-13
Burn prevention is a key endeavor of Shriners Hospital for Children, which is why the
health care system began its Burn Awareness campaigns more than 20 years ago.
Shriners Hospital for Children provides critical surgical and rehabilitative care for varying degrees of pediatric burn injuries. The hospital system is committed to research and
is regarded as a pioneer in developing major breakthroughs in burn medicine.
Homes are the site of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds
and fire-related injuries. Consider these facts:
Every day across the U.S., hundreds of children are taken to the emergency rooms for
treatment of scald burns caused by contact with hot liquids, steam or foods.
Approximately 65 percent of children under age 4 hospitalized for burn injuries were
scalded by hot liquids and 20 percent for contact burns.
Among children ages 14 and under, hair curlers and curling irons, room heaters, ovens
and ranges, irons, gasoline and fireworks are the most common causes of product related thermal burn injuries.
Since 1999, an average of 496 children ages 14 and under have died each year due to
unintentional fire or burn-related injury.
Nearly two-thirds of electrical burn injuries among children ages 12 and younger are associated with household electrical cords and extension cords. Wall outlets are associated
with an additional 14 percent of these injuries.
Children in homes without smoke alarms are at greater risk of fires and fire-related
death and injury.
Many of these injuries could have been easily prevented. The 2016 campaign, Be Burn
Aware, emphasizes the importance of observing basic precautions to keep everyone especially children safe at home.

NSA 2018 – STATUS REPORT
These field days with the great support already from Rutland County Businesses, nonprofit organizations and committees are moving very nicely in the correct direction. We are
gaining committee support within Cairo with needs of more organizers, committee supporters
at each level. Such needs in areas of marketplace coordinator, musical coordinator,
transportation to name a few.
With the Cairo Shrine setting Divan 2018 Potentate Wayne Sheppard, Chief Rabban Tom
Johnston, Assistant Rabban Jim Burt our in place Steering committee sending all the collected data forward, progress is being made. Brian Lawrence as Cairo’s Parade Marshall certainly takes a bite out of that huge project. We will be making the journey to NB, Canada in
March with a grand display of video, handout’s, verbal delivered information to promote
Cairo Country we all enjoy. Please with any support in any area notify Bob Ferguson –

and present information for the calendar year. Website uses the new PayPal
service for all events, dues, donations. This due to a great team
effort from many involved dedicated Cairo Shriners,
hats off to the team !!!
Legion of Honor report from Commander Bob Ferguson: Our unit seems to be in a
growing time bringing in four new members recently with views of doing better for
2016. We do as many parades, events, meetings as possible with our unit. Our new
slate of officers is set also with Joe Rigg as the new commander starting in March.
Bob has to many irons with the NSA and others and Joe graciously accepted the
position. Please remember all prior military service members are encouraged to
join this patriotic unit.

Greetings, Nobles and Ladies:
Another year has passed and we are starting a new one. Our thanks go to Illustrious
Bernie and Lady Pat for their contribution to Cairo Shriners. We are looking forward
to a busy year. There are a lot of activities planned: a polar plunge, pancake breakfast, bingos, the summer picnic, definitely something for everyone. The Shrine Maple
Sugar Bowl football game is in Castleton, VT again this year. What a great opportunity for all the nobles and their families to see some of what we are all about. Come
make a day of it, watch a great parade and football game.
I have had the opportunity to have visited with some of the children. What a wonderful and moving experience and they can’t thank us enough. This is why we belong to
the Shrine, pay our dues and participate in the various events.
Let’s have a great and fun filled year in 2016. Lady Celia and I look forward to seeing all of you in the upcoming months. Thanks for all you do.

Hello Nobles!
My name is Jim Burt and I’ve been asked to be the Oriental Guide this year as the Nobel who was
elected has decided to resign. I was born on May 17th 1965 in New Haven Vermont and currently
live in Bristol Vermont. I’ve worked for CVPS and now GMP for 16 years and I’ve been married
almost 29 years and my lovely wife Tabatha was active beside me and called Bingo for 1 year to
give Joanne Williams a break. We have two sons who are 18 and 21 and we also have a 17 year old
foster son. My older boy is a Mason and a Shriner but going to college full time now at VTC and he
works a lot in the summer so he has put some things on the back burner for now. My younger son is
waiting for our foster son to be 18 and they both are joining the Blue Lodge and then the Shriners. I
was on the Divan for a couple of years and decided to take two years off because I became Worshipful Master of Libanus Lodge #47 in Bristol on May 4th of last year for the first time. I’m back a year
earlier than I planned but I couldn’t say no to our Illustrious Potentate elect when he called me. I
wanted to really work on making our Blue Lodge strong, and if you think about it if the Blue Lodges
are strong we will have a much better chance of recruiting Nobles. That’s very important to me. I’m
currently a member of the Mini-Monster Unit based out of Middlebury and I also joined the Order of
the Eastern Star back in November of 2015 in hopes of making a stronger tie between the two groups
in our Lodge. I’m very active in the Blue Lodge but have no plans of going into the lineup of the
Grand Lodge of Vermont. I do plan on following through the ranks on the Divan and become Potentate in 4 or 5 years. I also plan on getting around and seeing all of the Units this year and I’m looking
to support you in any way I can. It would be great to see some of you folks at the Polar Plunge
“Freezin for a Reason” on Lake Bomoseen on March 12th and also at the Divan meetings and in
2018 the NSA is here in Rutland and we’re looking for help with that now as the planning is going
full steam ahead. Let’s have a great summer and let’s have fun and support those hospitals and each
other. I also strongly encourage you to go to your Blue Lodges and support them, they are our foundation and you know what happens if our foundation is collapsing…..eventually the structure becomes weak. If anyone has feedback for me you can email me at [email protected] or call me at

On a fine day in Cairo history of only a few ago the Shrine office was lost to free
flowing water from a pressure valve from the boiler. Yes it is true. It ruined the carpet
and made a very big mess for all involved.
With haste our Potentate Tom Ettori with the help of HPP Tom Johnston
cleared the area and hired a contractor. Jeff Farrell of Farrell Floor Covering, 94 Plain
Street, Rutland Vt. was secured. Jeff went in, cleared and disposed of damage. Jeff
then decided to donate his time and services for the good of Cairo. He stated that he
fully enjoyed what the Shriners do for the area, and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
From all of us from Cairo Country we say – “Fezes” off to Jeff and his company
that individually supports our effort, Thank you Jeff.

I want to thank you all for the Support you have given me throughout the years, with
all our efforts to make Cairo Strong.

Pat and I have enjoyed all our travels, visiting the Hospitals, Imperial Sessions and other Temples.

In our January Annual Meeting we welcomed Lady Barbara Ettori as the new
First Lady of Cairo, The Ladies of Helping Hands had a light Luncheon before the installation . Barbara's Daughter Michelle was in attendances to welcome Ladies at the
meeting. Lady Pat was honored at the Dinner with Special gifts from the Helping
Hands Group.
The Ladies of Helping Hands is Donating $600.00 to the Shriners Boston Burns
Hospital with funds raised and Lady Pat's contribution. We look forward to another
Wonderful year helping to support Cairo and the Shriners Hospitals.

Dear Nobles,
Shriners Hospitals for Children® will once again be featured on two DISNEY – ABC
shows: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and General Hospital. As part of this year’s Love
to the rescue® campaign, the collaboration with ABC raises awareness and support for
the expert pediatric specialty care available at Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Tune-in to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire next week (February 15 – 18) as the iconic
game show helps to raise funds for Shriners Hospitals.
Millionaire will donate $10,000 to Shriners Hospitals for Children every time a contestant
makes it to the second round of the game. Watch during the week as special guest Alec,
a patient at our Chicago hospital, asks the audience a question. It will be an exciting four
days as Millionaire and Shriners Hospitals work together to help transform the lives of

Tune-in to General Hospital starting Tuesday, February 16, to see how Shriners Hospitals for Children sends Love to the rescue to an injured child on the show. Throughout
