Rite Words Valley of Tucson - Orient of Arizona www.TucsonScottishRite.org Volume 58, Issue 5 September / October 2010 Personal Rep’s Message Status of Our Fundraising Ill.·. J. Michael Atchley, 33° Ill.˙. William E. Lofquist, 33° Welcome Back - I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. While you were away, the Cathedral showed her age. We had a few breakdowns: In the small dining room a drainage pipe broke and we had to replace several feet of piping. Then the 60Hp motor on the chiller system caught on fire. We spent several weeks working every day without air conditioning. After obtaining several bids for replacing the motor and a few other needed parts, the system is finally putting out cold air. As with any building 95 years old there is going to be constant problems. If we can keep up with the set-backs, we will still have one of the landmarks of Masonry in Arizona to call our home. We need to establish a Cathedral Maintenance Fund. All the money we raise from the two parking lots goes to maintain our Cathedral; however, it is not enough. Any extra help you can give to preserve our Cathedral would be greatly appreciated. (See page 9) With Fall approaching, we have several activities you need to mark on your calendar. Check out the calendar on page 5. At our November 11 th Stated Meeting, members of the Tucson KSA Clan will present the exemplification of the 29th Degree, Scottish Knight of Saint Andrew. We have not exemplified this degree in many years. Let’s turn out in force and fill the Red Room. While we are speaking about degrees, there is always room for more “Masters of the Royal Secret”. In fact, in the past 10 years the Masonic Lodges of Arizona raised 2,583 to the sublime degree of Master Mason while only 631 joined the Scottish Rite, leaving 1,952 Master Masons we need to reach. We need to speak about the need for continuing education, the value of belonging to a group of very active Masons who not only participate with their Blue Lodges, but are very active throughout the Fraternity and in their community. We need to explain why we are active in the Scottish Rite and the difference it has made in our lives. Check out our web page at www.TucsonScottishRite.org and be sure to notify us if you have moved. We would also appreciate receiving your current e-mail address. This is the only way we have of keeping our records accurate. The sale of raffle tickets for the 42-inch, high definition, flat-screen television is doing very well, as it should be. Several requests for additional tickets have been received. Remember, not only does the winner receive the television, but the drawing also includes delivery and setup. Also, the Mason who sells the most tickets will receive a very nice prize. Let’s continue the good work and sell all available tickets. Everyone needs a HD television. The winning ticket will be drawn during dinner at our November 11th Stated Meeting. I sincerely hope this article finds all of you healthy and ready to resume our labors at the Tucson Scottish Rite. During the summer, the Tucson KSA has been working on the 29th degree ritual. Any Brother who has seen, or participated in, a performance of this degree knows this degree can certainly present some challenging production issues. Even more challenging was the fact that prior to the recent Annual Southwest Scottish Rite Regional Reunion, none of the Tucson KSA members had actually seen the 29th degree presented. Being able to see the Valley of Denver degree team perform the ritual during the Reunion was very helpful. KSA will be presenting this degree to the Tucson Scottish Rite membership during our November 11th Stated Meeting. Mark your calendars and plan on attending. I look forward to sitting in Lodge with all of you very soon. Yours in Knighthood. Sir Knight Randal S. Jager, 32°, KSA Venerable Master Scottish Rite Community Service Project for 2010 REMINDER - we are continuing to collect nonperishable food items to be delivered to the Community Food Bank. Margaret Fulton Spencer: A Tucson Life Greetings from the depths of Summer! As the sun reaches the halfway point and most of us enjoy a break from the official business of the Craft, I would like to share a story from our city’s history—one that has left a memorable impact on the local landscape. As you drive west on Speedway, approaching the point where Anklam merges and it all becomes Gates Pass Road, look off to the right and see those quaint old stone cottages grouped around a central tower. This is the old Rancho Las Lomas Estates. Until a mid-1960’s fire, it was a winter home for the rich and famous. It subsequently became a “Bohemian” artists’ colony. I remember visiting the woman who was briefly married to my uncle there. Local rumor has it that it was built by Frank Lloyd Wright for one of his mistresses - the reality is a little less scandalous, though still a trend-breaker for the time. It was designed by Margaret Fulton Spencer, an artist, an architect and a role model for women. Ms. Spencer was born in 1892 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and at first studied art under her uncles Alexander and Birge Harrison. As a young woman she became associated with the artists’ colony founded by William Lathrop at New Hope and its “New Group” of September / October 2010 American Modernist painters. There she studied under, and in 1914 married Robert Spencer. Although she painted and developed both a talent and a reputation for restoring classic fieldstone farmhouses of the area (some of which are still standing), she lived in the shadow of her husband, who discouraged her artistic and architectural aspirations. It was not until after his death in 1931 that she began to come into her own. In the 1930s, she traveled in Africa, lived and exhibited in Paris and, most germane to this article, purchased a 200-acre ranch west of Tucson (there is a record of her working here as early as 1941). She designed the 16 cottages of the Rancho Las Lomas Estates, as well as two or three other homes even further west, employing the multicolored stones found in our desert. The Las Lomas houses are under consideration as a National Historic Site, while one of the others - the one where she spent the last years of her life - has in its yard, what is reputed to be, the oldest known creosote bush in the Tucson area. She died in 1966, having successfully “broken the mold” women of her time were expected to conform to. At some point in the 1950s (I have yet to determine the exact year), Margaret Fulton Spencer was inducted into the American Institute of Architecture - fittingly enough for an accomplished architect who started as “an artist’s wife, who painted part-time,” but who had the vision to aspire to more and the fortitude to achieve it - the first American woman to be so honored. The reality compares a little ironically to the legend, no? Tucson York Rite (Continued) Thank You Mark and Michelle Francis Bro.˙. Andrew W. Smith 32°, and his Lady Nancy Bro.˙. Donald B. Rite Words 6 Altan Kol Grotto James W. Sebastian, Monarch September / October 2010 IN HOME SENIOR CARE The long hot summer has just about come and gone. It is now time to get back to work. It is also time to look back at the activities of the summertime. First, let me say how honored I was to represent Altan Kol for recognition and introduction at both the Masonic Grand Lodge Session and the Grand York Rite Sessions. The entire Masonic family knows that Altan Kol in particular and M.O.V.P.E.R. Grotto in Arizona are alive, well and active. Second, let me thank Prophets and Past Monarch’s Bill Sneed and Paul Nix and their ladies for representing us at the National Grotto Sessions this summer. These two dedicated Prophets and their ladies are a very important part of the continued support and success of Altan Kol Grotto. As we start our fall activities, I want to invite all Prophets to our Rededication Service at our Stated Meeting on September 9, 2010. This Service will give us all something to think about as well as giving direction for our future. The annual California, Arizona, Nevada Grotto Association Meeting will be held in Scottsdale on September 23rd through the 25th. This will be as close as “Convention Grotto Fun” will come to us for another few years. I urge all who can attend to do so as there is also some important legislation on the agenda. Our October 14th meeting will have a theme of “Bring a Prophet to Meeting Night”. I urge every active Prophet to take the time to call a Prophet who has not attended a meeting in a while and invite him and his lady to join us for dinner and our meeting. This is a reminder of our November 11th meeting which will be a noon luncheon and 1:00pm meeting with our December 9th meeting being held in the same format this year. December will, of course, be our annual elections, when the future of our Grotto will be charted. One of the things we will be working on later this year is a comprehensive analysis of where we are in our Grotto life, where we want to go with our Order and how we plan to get there. In my mind this exercise is just like planning a trip. First, you must decide where you are, this point of retrospection is always the most sensitive. To complete this portion, we will certainly step out of our comfort zone for a true picture of where our Grotto is and how we arrived at this point. Second, like any trip, we will decide together where we want to go and what we want to accomplish when we get there. This portion of the exercise is easier because everyone has dreams and aspirations. The third part of our exercise is to set some Christian Companion Senior Care is the first and only faith-based caregiving service in Southern Arizona providing in-home care for seniors from a uniquely Christian perspective. Our mission is to honor God by providing Christian in-home living assistance as a channel of God’s love for seniors and their families. Services: Companionship, Personal Care, Cooking, Housekeeping, Spiritual Support, Transportation, “What If I Need You Program” and the LIFE LEGACY KEEPSAKE. For additional information contact Ron Swager 296-0085 realistic roadway plans and chart a course to reach our goals. Our Grotto is a wonderful organization with lofty and ambitious traditions, expectations and goals. As Altan Kol members, we must decide realistically where we fit into the “Grand Plan” and what we can and cannot do with the size of our membership. I look at the leadership and administrative abilities of our members and I see great strengths to be called upon. Our goal is to find the things our skill set can do and concentrate with our membership on those activities. This is our constant mission, goal and direction as Prophets and Masons. As a Mason, I am constantly amazed at the lack of knowledge which the rest of our great Masonic family has about our wonderful Grotto. We must, as good Masons and good Grotto Prophets, never fail to spread the word of our community efforts, our great camaraderie, fellowship and fun. We have much to offer! The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union, an umbrella group made up of representatives from many local unions. Approximately 10,000 workers assembled to participate in America’s first Labor Day parade (see photo above), as a tribute to American workers for their contributions to the strength and prosperity of the United States. It was born in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, when the average American worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week. After marching from City Hall, past reviewing stands in Union Square, and then uptown to 42nd Street, the workers and their families gathered in Wendel’s Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches. ` In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. NEEDED . . . You can also contribute your talents in many areas of need every Tuesday at the Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed in Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states: Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. Although Labor Day is a celebration of the labor movement and its achievements, it has come to be celebrated as the last long summer weekend before Autumn. However, the importance of what the day represents should not be forgotten. Cathedral; electrical, plumbing, painting, cleaning, etc. If you are available, we can certainly use your help.
