JUNE 2017
Food Glorious Food!
This month, as we celebrate our Alive in All Seasons theme of Food “Live in
Wellness”, we here at Williamstown are always trying to outdo ourselves
with food! Given our great location we are privileged to have some of the
freshest fruits and vegetables available and we sure do make the most of it.
We invite you to share some of our festive healthy summer festivities along
with summer fresh food. Our
summer kickoff party will
bring some colorful fresh
salads along with sweet juicy watermelon from local farms
topped off with fresh squeezed lemonade. Our movie
night will bring us back to fun-filled nights at the drive in
with fresh popped hot popcorn paired with a nice frosty
soda, and we can’t forget the fun choices of boxed
candies. We will also host a presentation by Registered
Dietician Mary Lou Bialon who will tell us what we need
for whole body wellness. Stop by and share in our
Summer fun with us!

A monthly contribution from our founder Lynne Katzmann
Connect4Life
Most of you are familiar with Connect4Life, Juniper’s program that
provides a host of important health care services to you on site.
We designed Connect4Life to do a couple of important things.
First, we wanted to provide you with convenient access to the
services you need so that you didn’t spend all your time scheduling
and getting to and from appointments with doctors or therapists.
We want you to enjoy yourself and engage in the activities you
love with the people who keep you going! Second, because
Connect4Life uses high tech, high touch systems to keep providers
connected and communicating with each other and with you on
your personal situation and needs, we are often able to prevent
conditions worsening by keeping you well or intervening earlier,
both of which are key to your long term wellbeing. In short,
Connect4Life is another way Juniper has developed to nurture
your spirit of life or help you live your best life.
Recently, we engaged Anne Tumlinson, a highly regarded
researcher in our field to evaluate the results of Connect4Life.
She measured three things: the impact we have had on hospitalizations, readmissions to a hospital following a treatment in the
hospital and visits to the Emergency Department. Why these three
measures? These happen to be the big three that government
and policy makers look at as they are the highest cost services. But
for you, they are also important to your quality of life. Hospitals can
be necessary evils but they are also places that can be disorienting
and at times difficult as there are many sick people in a hospital
and infections exist which can slow recovery.

“You are what you eat.” The old adage is now truer than ever. Good
health is largely dependent on good nutrition, so much so that doctors
trace many physical and emotional ailments back to a diet deficient in
vitamins and minerals. Eating a well-balanced diet is a major part of
encouraging long life, lowering the incidence of disease, and helping
sick people recover. On the flip side, inadequate nutrition and poorquality foods can generally cut life span and open us up to many illnesses
and disease. In effect, food is medicine per Webster's definition of
medicine: "The science and art dealing with the maintenance of health
and the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease." Food acts as
medicine - to maintain, prevent, and treat disease.
With this month’s Alive in All Seasons focus on food, we’d like to give
you a prescription for a healthy diet: breakfast daily (do not skip); meals
x3 (at least) daily; foods from each of the food groups per meal daily.
The food pyramid defines the food groups as grains, vegetables, fruits,
dairy and proteins. The amounts vary according to age, sex, height,
weight, and physical activity level. Here’s a good guideline to start you
on your way. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Make half your
grains whole grains. Move to low-fat and fat-free dairy. Vary your protein
routine and eat and drink the right amount for you.
Join us as we continue our focus on healthy aging
by shedding light on our hydration program with
healthy snacks and juices, and demonstrate how
food and nutrition help us to Live in Wellness
from a dietitian’s point of view.

CLASSIC MOVIE MUSICAL NIGHT
But now for the big reveal! Juniper’s rate of hospitalization was
half that of the comparable study group. Our readmission rate was
80% lower and our emergency department utilization was 15%

lower. Clearly, Connect4Life works!
FATHER’S DAY MAGIC SHOW
But beyond protecting quality of life for Juniper’s residents, the
results are important for the nation. They show that living in a
setting like Juniper coupled with accessible and coordinated care
and services are potentially good for people’s health and the
health of our nation’s bank account!
