In fact, many who qualify to be “seniors” rebel against the label. Today, those who are eligible for membership and discounts can be anywhere between the ages of 55 and over 100 years old. In Devon, based on the 2014 municipal census, there were 1,502 identified residents over 55. To break that down even further, at the time of this study, there were 790 between 55 and 64 years; 440 between 65 and 74 years, and 272 over 75 years. Research into the needs of older adults has highlighted that there is no one sure-fire way to age-in-place appropriately. For some, it means staying in their own home and having local supports; visiting professionals and support services available to come when they need them. Others want to live in a more social and collective environment. But in all cases, the desire to remain independent, for as long as possible, seems to take precedence. This guide is aimed at supporting older adults and seniors with useful information from what’s available socially, to where to find inhome help, and who to call for health advice. This information is gathered by the Town of Devon Family and Community Supports Service (FCSS), with support from the Older Adults Advisory Committee, and incorporates Town of Devon services, health, and community and not-for-profit groups. It does not include business information – if you are looking for a business, these can be found by calling 780-987-8300 or online at www.devon.ca.
