4-H POSTER CONTEST
Use your creativity with the theme to make a great 4-H poster!
Design a poster with the 2014 theme:
Realize Your 4-H Dreams in 2014
You can enter two categories.
•
Hand drawn – should be drawn on a 14x14-inch piece of Bristol board.
•
Computer generated – should be mounted on a 14x14-inch piece of Bristol board.
On the back of the poster clearly write or print the name of the member who drew the poster, their
age, number of years in 4-H, name of 4-H club and county.
• Posters should be original (i.e., not include known cartoon characters due to copyright
restrictions, e.g., Mickey Mouse, etc.)
If you choose to use the 4-H crest, be sure to use the Canadian 4-H crest on the poster or your poster
will be disqualified.
Be sure to check your county deadline!
The top posters from each county in Junior and Senior categories that meet the above guidelines will
be sent to 4-H Weekend to be judged.
At 4-H weekend, prizes will be awarded during 4-H Night in Nova Scotia. Speak to your Agriculture
Leadership Coordinator for details.

Poster and Display General Standards
Posters
(15) General Appearance: Neat, clean, tidy; free from glue residue, bent corners, pencil guidelines
and smudges.
(45) Creative Design: Eye catching; puts its message across with a minimum of words; uncluttered
(one big picture may be more effective than a lot of little ones); arrangement balanced so your eye
moves around the items on poster; adequate margins (top and sides equal, bottom a bit wider).
In a 4-H poster the Canadian 4-H emblem must be used.
(15) Colour: Colour attracts the eye and carries it around the poster; not too many colours; colours
harmonize and reinforces theme.
(25) Workmanship: Printing/ writing easy to read from a distance. Lettering – letters should be
formed with correct spacing.
Displays
(20) Attracts Attention: Effective use of size, shape, texture, colour, motion and light. Attracts
attention with favourable reaction. Good background materials used. Perishable items fresh (all food
attractively displayed).
(10) Arouses Interest: Encourages additional study or change of practice. Personal appeal to the type
of audience for whom exhibit was designed.
(30) Conveys a Message: Clear, simple, complete and convincing message. Correct spelling, proper
grammar used. Posters attractive and easy to read. All parts support one central theme. Important
points emphasized. Message understandable to intended viewer. Approach to subject interesting
and appropriate.
(20) Design: Elements of exhibit pleasingly placed to give sense of unity to whole and each logically
connected to central theme. Design enhances organization and readability of topic. Message is part
of design. Layout encourages viewers to read entire story. Simplicity, grouping of elements, open
space and lack of clutter or crowding are important.
(10) Originality: Evidence of creativity and original ideas.
(10) Workmanship: Neat and well constructed for the purpose. High standard of products used but
not necessarily expensive materials.
