STATE OF THE COLLEGE REPORT
p
FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Insights into an extraordinary year
As we come to the end of one academic year and begin
another, it behooves us to look with gratitude at the
achievements and issues of the past one and to plan
enthusiastically for that which faces D’Youville in the one ahead.
The 2004-05 academic year has seen many significant developments
for D’Youville College. A principal activity was the preparation of the Middle
States ten-year report and the visitation of the Middle States team in April.
That effort took many months and much deliberation on the college campus because it
involved the entire campus community and necessitated both self-reflection and the projection
of the most compelling issues that face the college for the proximate future.
The visit by the Middle States team was a great success. We enjoyed learning from our colleagues and
benefited greatly from the interaction with them. As a result of that visit, there were three comprehensive
recommendations made to the college:
n
n
n
To continue to dialog about D’Youville’s mission statement and to incorporate the mission into all
of our plans, programs and departments
To develop a new institutional plan that flows directly from the mission statement and addresses
future needs
To develop a comprehensive outcomes assessment evaluation program, which will enable us to discover
whether or not we are meeting our goals and achieving the standards that we have set for ourselves.
LAYING NEW ACADEMIC MILESTONES
Along with the comprehensive Middle States process, however, the college made many other significant
strides as follows:
n
The chiropractic program, offered first during the 2004-05 academic year, worked out its curriculum,
on both the undergraduate and graduate levels, modifying it and streamlining its offerings. It also
commenced its initial recruitment efforts, which successfully brought a significant number of new
students to D’Youville in the fall of 2005.
n
The mathematics major that has not been offered at D’Youville since 1993 was reinvigorated and
took in its first students in August 2005. This new academic program will meet the overwhelming
demand for math and computer science teachers and will broaden the college’s liberal arts and
sciences degree offerings.
n
The year 2004-05 also was the first full academic year during which the exercise and sports studies
program was offered. It seems to be on a very good course attracting students and preparing them
with a solid foundation for future opportunities in their field. The growing interest in exercise
science and fitness and D’Youville’s long expertise in healthcare and the sciences allows this
program to fit easily into the college’s curricular offerings.
SHARING OUR INTELLECTUAL WEALTH
One of the most exciting developments of the past year has been the focus on research. Inasmuch
as D’Youville now offers so many programs on the graduate level, especially the new doctoral
programs, it is important for the faculty and the students to be engaged in research programs.
Throughout the past year, many faculty have developed research agendas, have been involved in
individual and collaborative projects, and have used the excitement that those projects have produced
to enhance their teaching and to involve the students. Because of the importance of research in
graduate education, it is incumbent upon D’Youville to offer opportunities and resources to both
faculty and students to help them engage their knowledge in ways that will prove beneficial when
they are applied to many fields of learning and professional issues.
This past year has seen the beginning of the D’Youville College Center for Cognitive Science
that focuses on providing research opportunities for faculty and students in a multitude
of interdisciplinary areas including cognition, ontology, learning, behavioral sciences,
consciousness studies, biopsychology, spatial reasoning and extended biomedical applications.
That research, coupled with the work being done currently by other faculty members in their individual
departments, has ignited many other faculty to discover their issues of investigation and to pursue them.
STRENGTHENING OUR ATHLETIC PROWESS
During 2004-05 the college participated in the newly configured North East Athletic Conference
(NEAC) of NCAA Division III teams. D’Youville fared well in the competition and embraced eagerly
the issues that face any fledgling athletic conference. Through the hard work of all of the eleven
colleges participating in the conference, the academic and athletic standards of the players are high, the
colleges enjoy excellent competitive sports, and athletes are grounded in the values commensurate with
good sportsmanship and athletic rigor.
D’Youville’s crew team continues to strengthen its athletic prowess and participated in several
competitions. Because of increased interest among the students, the crew team has expanded and will
be even more competitive and competent during the 2005-06 year.
Although, in the past few years, D’Youville has been able to build a beautiful new gym and expand
the locker rooms and exercise facilities, the athletic programs are going to require continuous attention,
funding and space over the next few years.
BUILDING OUR FINANCIAL BASE
Multifaceted fundraising efforts were successful. The college endowment has grown and has reached
$17,910,000. During the past year, the scholarship funds have increased also from approximately
$2.8 million to $3.2 million. In addition, the college was successful in acquiring new grant funding. A
review of the list of the grants received indicates the extent of their financial support but does not portray
adequately the incentive they have provided for research, programmatic development, marketing and
recruitment of students.
Recently, D’Youville was notified that the college will receive $1.6 million from the Transportation
Equity Act—A Legacy For Users (TEA-LU). Those funds will be used to reconfigure the block of
Fargo Avenue between Connecticut Street and Porter Avenue to make it safer for pedestrian use and
more aesthetically appealing.
ENHANCING OUR URBAN CAMPUS
One of the college’s most exciting accomplishments was the dedication of a new residence building
in January 2005. This building houses 165 students and is built in an apartment-style design. The
building lends significance to the Westside of Buffalo and enhances Connecticut Street particularly.
Passersby have commented on the appeal of the structure and are pleased that D’Youville has been able
to expand in such a way that strengthens the surrounding community.
A major improvement made during the summer of 2005 was the replacement of all the windows in
the Koessler Administration Building. It is the first phase of a two-phase process. The next and very
welcome change will be the installation of a completely new HVAC system, resulting in air-conditioning
of the entire building and Madonna Hall as well.
Another substantial physical improvement made over the summer was the upgrading of the Kavinoky
Theatre. The lighting was replaced with a state-of-the-art system. New curtains, paint and an apron,
added to the front of the stage, all enhance the theatre’s appearance.
CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF SERVICE
Service is a strong component of D’Youville’s mission. The number of students engaged in service
projects increases each year; the learning and satisfaction that is achieved through those programs is of
great value not only to the community, but also to the students themselves.
During the past year, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) had an extraordinary year. They secured
first place in the regional competition in New Orleans and moved to the national level. At the national
level, one hundred schools—including D’Youville—were divided into ten divisions. While they did
not place in the final round, the students took first place in the first round and second place in the second
round. The endeavors in which they were engaged were service projects involving high school students
who learned to develop and implement an entrepreneurial plan of assisting people in Western New
York to fill out their tax returns, especially those who had difficulty because of age, infirmity, language
or lack of literacy. The results were then presented in competition.
PLANNING OUR ENROLLMENT GROWTH
The fall semester of 2004 saw the largest enrollment that D’Youville has ever had. However, that
number has been exceeded in fall 2005 and D’Youville now has more undergraduate, master’s level,
and doctoral students than in any previous year. One of the other significant goals for the college for
the past several years was to provide a better mix of students so that the number of freshmen was
increased, the number of graduate students stabilized, and a greater diversity was found among students
in graduate programs. Progress has been made toward each of those goals and D’Youville is planning
new and significant enrollment goals for future years. Although there are many students at D’Youville,
the college still remains very personal and true to its mission of addressing individual student needs and
of providing the kind of support and encouragement that helps a student achieve academic success.
Not only have the number of students increased but students have changed in other ways as well. SAT
scores continue to climb and the diversity of international students grows significantly each semester.
D’Youville’s growth has been exponential rather than incremental. It is visible on campus because of
the number of new buildings and newly refurbished existing buildings. It is visible, also, by the number
of students who traverse the campus on a regular basis and is definitely visible in the number of cars
that are parking or trying to park on or near campus at any single moment. There is life and activity
everywhere and a wholesome vibrancy is so abundant that it is almost tangible.
Truly, D’Youville College is an exhilarating place to be!
Now it is time to look toward the future…
EMBRACING THE WORLD COMMUNITY
The college is bursting with ideas for new—and exciting—academic programs.
In addition, the college is continuing to expand its technological capability. In future years, D’Youville
must make certain that it expands its technology in ways that enable learning and interaction with
people in other educational and research institutions throughout the world. The connections with
scholars and researchers in other countries will enrich the knowledge base of students here and
acquaint them with international developments and possibilities. Marguerite d’Youville’s spirit of
inclusion is evident in these new ventures.
This same spirit—the spirit of Marguerite—compels D’Youville to move forward in innovative
and courageous ways. The new doctoral programs in health policy and chiropractic care are based
on the long tradition of providing compassionate health care to those most at risk or most neglected
by contemporary practice and systems. Based on Marguerite’s innovative ways of serving the most
abandoned and neglected, I believe that D’Youville should embrace the opportunity to welcome
students from countries where higher education is not so available or accessible as it is in the United
States and to find creative ways of educating those who have impediments to learning because of
previous experiences or emotional barriers.
10
STATE OF THE COLLEGE REPORT
Because of the shrinking borders in our world, the international aspect of education must inform both
the curriculum and the college’s recruitment efforts. D’Youville has made strides in its global presence
and its ability to attract students from other countries. However, these steps are only initial ones
and must be taken to far greater lengths in order for D’Youville to prepare graduates well for the
world in which they will be living. Therefore, international presence through additional study abroad
programs, the recruitment of students, and the incorporation of global interests and information in all
of the curricular offerings is a challenge that must be addressed in the next years and beyond.
In order to accommodate the increased number of students at D’Youville, there must be a continued
search for appropriate property for expansion purposes. In the near future, more space will be required
for academic programs, athletic fields, research and parking. The science laboratories should be
modernized and expanded and new ones need to be constructed for the program requirements now in
place at the college. Classrooms are being updated but more are required to meet the enrollment growth
anticipated in the next few years. Along with classroom space is the concomitant need for faculty
offices. Plans are being made for these additional facilities as well.
Additionally, for the last several years, D’Youville has requested permission from the Ministry of
Education in Ontario, Canada, to offer courses and a degree program on-site in Canada. This request is
moving forward and it is conceivable that within the next two years D’Youville will have a Canadian
presence. This development may or may not occur, but D’Youville is poised and ready for the
exciting collaborative venture that this proposes. The outcome is contingent upon the permission of the
appropriate regulatory agencies in Ontario.
APPROACHING ONE HUNDRED YEARS
Plans are moving forward for the celebration of D’Youville’s Centennial in the year 2008. It is
startling to think that D’Youville is nearly one hundred years old and has continued to offer a firstclass education at a modest tuition to diverse groups of students during these one hundred years. The
celebration will be fun, inclusive and filled with gratitude for God’s continuous blessings.
MIRRORING SAINT MARGUERITE
Most of all, thrusting us forward into a wonderful future is the spirit of Marguerite d’Youville.
Marguerite was a woman who embraced challenge and turned it into opportunity, always mindful
of those who were most marginalized in society.
With that spirit in mind, D’Youville prepares to move forward with the same ingenuity, creativity,
determination, and compassion that were so obvious in Marguerite’s life.
It is apparent that our graduates have accomplished remarkable things and have given overwhelming
examples of service and compassion emanating from the education that they have received here.
It is my hope that current students and future graduates continue in that same vein and become the
fine women and men of the future who will transform the face of society and consider it a privilege
to offer their hands to the needy.
Ad multos annos!

ADVANCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS
f
FUNDRAISING June 1, 2004 - May 31, 2005
A reflection of support of the college’s mission
“ To teach students to contribute to the world community by
leading compassionate, productive and responsible lives,
“
are lines from the D’Youville College mission statement that
articulate the primary goal of the college. This is a daunting
responsibility and one that is not easily accomplished.
Whether students are studying physical therapy, nursing, education, or
international business, the objective is always the same: they must be cognizant
that they who have had the privilege of a baccalaureate degree—and for many who have
studied beyond that level—have a responsibility to the communities in which they elect to
live and work. Thus, the philosophy of St. Marguerite d’Youville becomes a living commitment
throughout their years at the college.
D’Youville is extremely fortunate to have the leadership of Sister Denise A. Roche, GNSH, and an
administrative staff who endorse and foster the charge described above. Since 1908 when it was founded,
the college has been quick to identify a need in the community and to respond. At the height of World
War II, the dearth of nurses resulted in the establishment of a nursing program, which continues to
flourish today. It would be easy to give a long litany of the programs that D’Youville has developed
because the college saw a deficiency and responded to the need.
12
FINANCIAL SUMMARY
How has D’Youville been able to sustain this expansion and development? It is because the generosity
of her alumni and friends has been extraordinary. In the difficult days of the Great Depression, young
graduates bought life insurance policies with the college as sole beneficiary. A few years later with the
advent of an alumni/development office, a plan was introduced asking graduates to give $36.50 per year
or ten cents a day. In the same spirit, the Grey Nuns themselves have long been outstanding examples
of beneficence, returning their small stipends to the college coffers. And so, the college continues to
carry on its mission.
This past year has been a particularly gratifying one in the annals of the college’s fundraising. Significant
success was experienced in procuring grants throughout the 2004-2005 year. Almost $1.2 million in gifts
and grants from alumni, friends, corporations and foundations flowed into the college. The John R.

does not imply that the college does less in providing excellent education for students. The quality
and effectiveness of classroom teaching, the welcoming of low-income students, and the retention
and graduation of minority students all reflect the concerns of the faculty for our students and the
careful stewardship of funds entrusted to the college. Jesuit Saturdays by William J. Byron, SJ, former
president of The Catholic University of America and rector of Georgetown University, identifies these
values: “...to carefully and creatively manage limited resources, working for a multiplier effect through
a strong sense of commitment to students, and preparing first generation college students for upward
mobility and careers of complete and generous service to their communities.” These words eloquently
articulate D’Youville’s mission.
Whatever the heights to which the college has ascended in the nearly one hundred years of her history,
there must be no limits as to where she can go and to what she can continue to achieve. D’Youville will
always be a good steward of the funds entrusted to her and of the students entrusted to her, who expect
to receive the excellent education for which she is known.
It is a tribute to those whose names are recorded here in recognition of their loyalty and constancy to

Earlier this year, as a symbolic way to recognize
all women who make contributions to world peace,
the Nobel Prize Committee proposed a list of one
thousand women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005.
Named in that group is Sr. Rosalie Bertell, GNSH,
Ph.D. She was a researcher at Roswell Park Cancer
Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., for many years, and now
resides in Yardley, Pa.
1954
Alice Barton, poet and longtime professor at the
University of Massachusetts, has authored her
first novel. South Station recreates her birthplace,
Lowell, Mass., during World War II and the 1940s.
She features a city of neighborhoods centered
around the ethnic Catholic churches that permeated
religious, social and cultural life. The relationships
of her complex characters, her sense of setting and
her beautiful prose make South Station a delightful
read. Alice and her husband live in Dennis, Mass.,
on Cape Cod.

Anne McDonald Morrissey felt that she needed a
change from the responsibilities of her position at
University Hospitals of Cleveland, but was not ready
to retire. She loves Africa and is about to embark
on “another African adventure.” While perusing a
microbiology journal, Anne read an ad from Duke
University describing a position that requires a
“master’s degreed medical technologist with clinical
microbiology, lab management and international
experience to supervise a microbiology laboratory
and train local technologists in Moshi, Tanzania (East
Africa) to support a National Institute of Health grant
studying co-infections in HIV-infected patients.” “I
knew it was my job the minute I read it.” She’ll live
in a two-bedroom house complete with maid (who
cooks) and a gardener. Her new home, located at
the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, is about a 10-minute
walk from a new lab facility built by the Gates
Foundation.

Judith Horvath Getz, a resident of Charlotte, N.C.,
is an assistant media specialist for the Charlotte
Mecklenburg Schools.
Retirement is not in the immediate future of Dr.
Marilynn Mahoney Fleckenstein. In addition
to her position as director of the Learn and Serve
program, she has been named associate academic
vice president at Niagara University. “It is a position
that I am excited about since my responsibility will
include all academic policy and all new programs,
especially graduate ones.” Officially her term
began August 24, the start of the new semester. In
her spare time, she will consult in Manila for her
former student, the president of Chicago’s DePaul
University.

Mari-Jo Charlebois Harney, who is the executive
director/owner of Professional Nursing Services,
Inc., makes her home in Hopkinton, N.Y.
North Andover, Mass., resident Karen M. Kline,
has organized a petition effort to recognize the
town’s historical roots by changing the town’s name
to Olde Andover. She insists that North Andover,
which split with Andover in the 1800s, is the original
Andover and she has collected signatures in hopes
that town selectmen will petition the state for a name
change. This may be a long process.
