I arrived at Duke not really knowing what I wanted to do and considering myself
a secular Jew. I never had a Bat Mitzvah, never went to services, and my family
barely celebrated Passover and Hanukkah. Less than one year later, I have a
major, am a member of Delta Gamma sorority and Duke Democrats, take pictures
for the school newspaper, lead campus tours, and, most surprisingly, now serve as
the communications executive on the Jewish Student Union (JSU) board.
The Freeman Center for Jewish Life is a place where you want to get involved with
Jewish Life at Duke. The community is so warm and welcoming no matter how

strongly you identify with the religion. I first came for Thursday night dinner to try
the famous mac and cheese. Then I started coming occasionally on Friday nights
for Shabbat dinner, where I met new people and learned about the traditions I had
missed during my childhood. Now, I come to the Freeman Center regularly as an active member of JSU.
I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Israel this past summer with Duke’s Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. In addition
to touring the sites, the group members participated in meaningful discussions and formed lasting bonds with each
other. This rewarding experience allowed me to witness the connection between Judaism and Israel while teaching
me more about Jewish religion and culture. My experience made me proud of my Jewish heritage.
After a great first year at Duke, I am thrilled to return to school in the fall, attend Shabbat dinner on Friday nights,
be active in my work with JSU, and get more friends involved with Jewish Life. Can't wait to be back at Duke!

Having graduated from Solomon Schechter High School of Long Island,
a small Jewish high school, choosing the right college with a tight-knit
sense of community was a daunting task. I headed to Duke hoping for
a similar experience.
With
over
six
thousand
students
at
Duke,
I
was
delightfully
surprised to find the same sense of comfort and familiarity that
AXp:XeXi`ZbXe[_`jkn`ej`jk\iC`Xee\giXp`e^fekfgf]DXjX[X%
I
found
in
high
school.
The
atmosphere
on
campus,
through
academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities, provides for school
spirit and camaraderie unlike anywhere else. Within the Duke community, I found an even closer community— the
Jewish Community. Duke students are curious and you find yourself meeting Jews of all different backgrounds from
all over the globe. Sharing both the Duke and the Jewish connection, you are bound to find your niche with Jewish
Life at Duke.
In addition to being a board member for Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, the treasurer of Duke Friends of Israel, and
a dedicated student, I also attend Shabbat dinners, participate in holiday services and have a great time at
Jewish Student Union and Hillel events such as this year’s Bar Mitzvah celebration at the Freeman Center.
To further my Jewish experience through Duke, I intend to participate in a Duke-sponsored Alternative Winter Break
to Israel. Trips like these are a great opportunity for those like myself who have already been to Israel and are not
eligible for Birthright to visit Israel with friends from college.
What makes life here so great, especially Jewish life, is that it is so welcoming—all students are welcome, Jewish or
not, and Jewish Life at Duke truly makes students proud to be Jewish and proud to let all their friends know it, too.
