STAFF INTEREST GROUPS GUIDELINES 1. Introduction

STAFF INTEREST GROUPS GUIDELINES
1.
Introduction
1.1
Staff Interest Groups (SIG) would serve to bring together staff who have
common interests. This platform would allow for activities and/or mutual
support in embarking or maintaining their health. The areas of health could
include:
- Exercise groups (walking, running, hiking, swimming, Frisbee, water sports
etc.)
- Support groups (hypertension, hyper-cholesterol, dementia, diabetes etc.)
- Recreational groups (board games, book clubs, etc.)
2.
Background
2.1
Staff traditionally participated in sports and games under Staff Sports. There
are currently 12 various sports and games teams. However, with the SIGs,
new interest / activities that staff are keen to initiate can be added upon
approval of UHC Wellness.
2.2
The main benefits of initiating the SIGs would be:
- to have more avenues and outlets for staff to be involved in outside of work
- generation of non-traditional groups that can be more inclusive and address
areas that were previously not looked into
- cross department / campus interaction that would help build unity and
belonging
3.
Criteria
3.1
Each group would need to have a leader who will responsible for:
* regular updates of group activity via NUS Facebook which would consist of
short write-ups of the meetings/activities and photos
* prudent management of the allocated budget for the group.
* other administrative tasks such as the booking of venues, procurement of
attires and relevant equipment for group activities.
3.2
Leaders would serve a term of 2 years with option to extend for another term
of 2 years.

3.3
There will need to be at least 5 active members in each SIG to justify the
support that Wellness will be rendering. The budget allocated will be $200 per
member per year. The items that can be covered by the budget would include:

Attire for group members;

Relevant equipment;

Venue booking fees (if applicable);

Refreshment (drinks and fruits)
3.4
SIGs will be required to meet at least once per fortnight. If this criteria is not
fulfilled for more than 3 times, UHC Wellness will have the prerogative to
withdraw the support for the group.
4.
Communication and publicity
4.1
Staff will be made aware of the SIG scheme via:
* UHC Website
* Health advocates to their respective faculties via emails and word-of-mouth
* UHC events
5.
Formation process
5.1
All staff will be eligible to form SIGs by submitting their applications (Please
see Annex 1) either through the Health Advocates or directly to UHC
Wellness.
5.2
UHC Wellness will assess all applications and grant approval to successful
SIGs. (Please see flow chart in Annex 2)
6.
Conclusion
6.1
The proposal for the Staff Interest Groups would help to target staff who have
not been involved in Wellness activities. The SIGs would serve to be selfinitiated and maintained platform that would help to expand the offerings to
diverse interests and individuals within NUS.
