Step 1: Define…
What is “redistricting”?
What is “gerrymandering”?
Step 2:
Head to the computer lab, sign into a computer with your partner, and go to www.redistrictinggame.org.
Click on “Play the Game.”
Step 3:
The game sets up five different missions. I want
you to go through each (time permitting)
sequentially, in the following way:

First, read through and complete the
mission (“Basic” or “Advanced”; I
recommend “Advanced”). Note: you may
need to select allow pop-ups from the
preferences menu.

Second, (or if stuck on the mission), go to
“Learn More”, and answer the question I
have given you.

Third, go to the “Quotes” page and select
a good quote to represent that mission.
(Any one they provide would be fine.)
The term “gerrymander” is named after Elbridge Gerry, a
governor of Massachusetts from 1810 to 1812, and a
supposedly salamander-shaped constituency that he created.
Mission One
Learn More…
What are the three most fundamental concepts of redistricting?
Chosen quote:
Mission Two
Define “packing” and “cracking.”
Mission Three
Why might state legislatures attempt bipartisan gerrymandering?
Mission Four
How did the VRA change redistricting?
Mission Five
What efforts exist to make redistricting “fairer”?
If you finish the class activity and responses early, check out the website links, or go to
http://www.ohioredistricting.org/ to read about Ohio’s redistricting competition. Compare this to Ohio’s
actual district map: www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/upload/elections/maps/OEcongressDist.pdf
