Netball
The U12 A team had a fantastic game against
St Andrews which has been described as the
comeback of the century by Mrs Park and
earns them team of the week. Highlights
from the game: 5 minutes in and we are 6-0
down! They were speedy and we were still
parking the bus! Quarter time we were losing
7-1! We needed to change our tactics. So....
We dropped behind them, into the space
where they had been putting the ball.
We will try and provide you with a 360 degree
view of all things sporting in and out of
Cumnor, please do keep us posted on any
sporting highlights outside of school. Email
in to [email protected] please.

Hockey
The hockey season for the girls came off with
a great ending, having Ella D, Mabel P, Catie
C and Madge L all selected for the Sussex
County Hockey Squad.
We also wish Mrs Chapman the best of luck
during half term as she represents the UK
with her team East Grinstead in Lithuania at
the Indoor Hockey Euro Championships.
generally trying hard to use all the coaching
points she is given.
We have started back this term with great
enthusiasm and with lots of netball being
played. Our focus for training has still been
centred around driving onto the ball,
however we have also looked at how we
react to a turnover ball, which has focused
our attention on quick decision making and
quick reactions to switch from our attacking
to our defensive play and vice versa. After
the U13As had a few issues with their passing
in their tournament at Hurst, where despite
showing great agility and speed, the ball kept
getting turned over due to lack of power and
accuracy, we have spent time on our passing
to ensure the moves we make are not
wasted.
The U13 player of the week, voted for by the
girls and Mrs Hicks from the Hurst
tournament, has to be Lulu R, for some
excellent defending and turnovers, and
5 minutes in and it was 7-7. St Andrews had
no answers as we forged a narrow lead. Half
time we were winning 10-9! So... More of the
same please girls
3rd Quarter - leading by 4 - 14-10
Final quarter they started to make a little
comeback but our defence was solid and our
shooters were on fire!
Final Score - 17-12
Katie B and Freya K were outstanding;
Madge L got their 'Girl of the Game'.
We’ve had some good U11 and U10 matches,
with solid shooting from Olivia C, Mollie S
and Sophie T in particular. Antonia W
deserves a mention for her speed and agility
around the court and her accurate passing.
Keep up the good work!

Rugby
The rugby season now moves into a short 7s
season for selected players in the U13 and
U11 age groups - although everyone will have
a sevens rugby experience as part of the
normal games sessions.
2
Furthermore, the recent snow and frozen
grounds has allowed us to make use of the
sports hall - where we can have 60 children
working purposefully in an athlete
development/fitness circuit. Older students
also have access to the Sworkit app. Last
term we regularly ran the cross-country
course, and now enjoy some of our minorsports on the Friday of a home-weekend.
Swimmers of the week go to: India S, Felicity
T, Lucy C-P, Jethro T and Mae B.
We have many of the senior swim squad
members taking part in the regional IAPS
qualifiers on Thursday for a place at the
Nationals in May, best of luck!
Visiting coaches from Eastbourne College
and Brighton College commented how well
this was going and said our children
performed well in their strength and
conditioning sessions.
Cross-Country
Sevens rugby involves just 7 players - with 3
of those forming a scrum. The players most
suited to 7s are great tacklers, able to win the
ball at the breakdown, comfortable with the
ball, talk well, support each other and, able
to change speed and tempo of play, and have
long passes. Oh, and being quick always
helps!
Swimming outside of school: Robert C-S
swam amazingly well in the recent Gala at
Brighton, narrowly missing out on some
county times, Teilo W achieved some
regional times in his events with a time of
29.82 in the 50m Freestyle race, which
placed him 19th in the country and 4th in the
region. Oliver A competed in his first time
trial for Marlins with 50m swims in all four
strokes.
With Rugby 7s now an Olympic sport, the
world-wide appeal of the game, means that
younger players such as those at Cumnor
now have a much more clearly defined
pathway to achieve here.
Mr Westerby has been involved in setting up
a Sussex 7s team that will compete against
other counties in June. Perhaps some
Cumnor players will be involved in the future!
The x-country team attended Great
Walstead’s invitational event and returned
with a great set of results, good preparation
towards their nationals coming up in March.

Games
programme
Last term we introduced the beginnings of a
set warm up routine for children to learn and
perform prior to any training or match. Not
only does this help to prepare physically, but
sticking to a set programme has helped
develop a routine and discipline in our
players.
The starting point was to look at the
movement patterns involved within the
sports we play and to then look to replicate
these within the warm up. Typically, they are
based around push, pull, squat, lunge, brace,
rotate and gait movements. Ideally, we try to
look at the movements involved in the
upcoming sport, as well as the one they are
currently playing.
