In CIS 111 you will learn about how computers work, how to write simple HTML code and create Web Pages, and how to use Microsoft Excel and Access. This course requires intensive reading and listening to the video demo tutorials. There are also weekly activities that need to be submitted before the deadline each week. The course is worth 3 transfer units. For each unit you should spend at least 3 hours per week. This means that you at least need 9 hours per week. In the online sections of CIS 111 you read (or listen to) lecture materials, use both Blackboard and SAM environments, participate in discussion groups, and complete and submit assignments, tests, and exercises. You will find the weekly schedule in the Class Schedule Link. The online section is not a "work at your own pace" course. All exercises, quizzes, and assignments are due weekly just as with a traditional course; those who successfully complete this course typically spend more time and effort than would be required for a traditional lecture class. However, because you can arrange your hours any way you see fit, the online class is a great opportunity for those with irregular schedules or who have difficulty coming to campus. Textbooks & Software This semester we will be using Office 2016. The Office version that you need MUST at least include Excel, Access, and Word. The book bundle should be for Office 2016, NOT for any earlier version. If you are getting a used bundle, make sure that you get the right one. The bundle includes the following. Enhanced Discovering Computers Enhanced Edition 2017 Microsoft® Excel® 2016: Intermediate Microsoft® Access 2016: Intermediate SAM 2016 Assessment, Training, and Projects – o Printed Access Card (or Instant access code if purchased from the publisher’s Website) o Details on how and where to get the textbooks bundle is in this link: http://faculty.orangecoastcollege.edu/mmalaty/Textbooks.pdf CIS A111 Syllabus © Martha Malaty - 2016 Page 1 Orange Coast College Business, Computing, & Career Education Division CS/CIS Department CIS A111 (Introduction to Information Systems) Spring 2017 Syllabus Instructor: Martha Malaty Software, Computer & Internet Requirements: To complete the online coursework, you must work on a computer that has the following: Fast Internet access (DSL or Cable). PC Computer using Windows 10 or older version that is compatible with Office 2016. Office 2016 Professional Plus (or Enterprise Editions.) The edition must at least include the following 1. Word 2016: Word processing application to submit your reports 2. Excel 2016: Spreadsheet application. We will use this application starting the first week of the semester. You need to have it installed on your computer before that. 3. Access 2016: Database Application Flash player and sound to listen to tutorial videos and flash demos. Text Editor or HTML editor: Notepad, Notepad++, or any other similar text editor to write your HTML code. o You should NOT use a Word Processor to write HTML code, since it adds symbols that cannot be interpreted by HTML. SAM 2016 (Skills Assessment Management). It is training and assessment software for Excel and Access. It includes Training, Exams, and Projects for each of the related chapter each week. You are required to submit the project and exams related to Excel and Access using SAM. o This is a new product than SAM 2016. If you have SAM 2016 from an earlier class, you need to purchase the new code for SAM 2016, since it is not compatible. o SAM’s Institution Key for OCC Students: T2025199 o Check the following document for instruction on how to register to SAM: SAM Registration Instructions You can purchase Office 2016 - and other software products - through the Foundation for California Community Colleges / College Buys website (https://foundationccc.org/CollegeBuys), for less than $40. If you cannot afford to purchase Office 2016, you can use the Open Lab in the Computing Center to complete your work. IMPORTANT for MAC users!!! o This course does not teach about software for Mac computers. o Office 365 for Mac’s does not include Access, which is a major part (one third) taught in this course. The only way to work with that is to install the PC version of Office that includes the necessary applications, you MUST install a Windows partition or Parallels on your MAC (Check the following links for instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/186907/how-to-install-windows-on-a-mac-with-boot-camp/) http://www.howtogeek.com/187359/5-ways-to-run-windows-software-on-a-mac/ o Before you purchase the software, make sure that it includes Word, Excel, and Access. o You are responsible for any compatibility issues and/or differences in the software if you use MAC. o IF you do not want to (or cannot) install partition or parallels, you can work in the Open Lab in the Computing Center that has the necessary applications for this class. o The Computing Center is usually open late during week days and open for a period of time during weekend. Check the opening times by calling (Phone: 714-432-5634) or check in person at the front desk. Blackboard Learn This is the environment with which we will work and communicate. Each week, you need to check your required activities through Blackboard. You need to get familiar with this environment. For help you can do one of the following: o Search the online help (https://enus.help.blackboard.com/Learn/9.1_Older_Versions/9.1_SP_10_and_SP_11/Student). CIS A111 Syllabus © Martha Malaty - 2016 Page 2 Orange Coast College Business, Computing, & Career Education Division CS/CIS Department CIS A111 (Introduction to Information Systems) Spring 2017 Syllabus Instructor: Martha Malaty Check the video tutorials for students (https://enus.help.blackboard.com//Learn/Reference/Blackboard_Learn_Videos/Student_Videos). o Contact OCC team for Blackboard help (http://www.orangecoastcollege.edu/about_occ/Technology/Pages/Blackboard-TechnicalSupport.aspx). You can reach Blackboard through MyOCC site (https://mycoast.cccd.edu/cp/home/displaylogin). You can also go directly to the Blackboard Webpage through the https://occ.blackboard.com link. You need to have a correct version of Java installed and have all your Pop-Up Blockers turned off. Remember that your Pop-Up Blockers are in your browser settings, any toolbars you may have installed from Yahoo! or Google, and in any firewall software (e.g. Norton. McAfee ... etc.). You need set-up your Web browser and make sure that every now and then you clear your browser cache and temporary Internet files. Here is a useful link that shows you how to do that: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache. Usually the class will be available the first day of the semester. Except for the syllabus and the schedule, you cannot access the class material before that. You must have registered for your class in order to be able to see it in your course list. If you do not know your “MyOCC” login information, or have registered for the class but you do not see it in your course list, you need to either call or submit an online ticket to Technical Support. Some assignments may require submission through Blackboard’s “Assignments” section. Check the class schedule for weekly activities list (http://faculty.orangecoastcollege.edu/mmalaty/CIS111Schedule.pdf) You can check your grades through the “Grade book” in Blackboard. Weekly Activities Each week (or unit) you will be asked to do the following activities: 1. Read the online material in both Blackboard and SAM, read the assigned chapters from the textbooks, and/or listen to the video tutorials (for HTML). 2. Perform the assigned activities for the current week that will be listed in the assignments. You must follow the textbook activities for both Excel and Access. For HTML, you will follow some YouTube tutorials. 3. You need to have hands-on experience doing those activities. Without that, it is very hard for you to learn the material. 4. Participate actively in the discussion section for the given unit. You will also be given extra credit points for participation. This will enhance your scores. 5. Use SAM training (for Excel and Access) to practice and finish the assigned projects. 6. Finish and submit your homework assignment ahead of time, long before the deadline. No late assignment will be accepted - for any reason - after the deadline. 7. Take the Quiz/Exam for that week/unit before the deadline. 8. Finish and submit the project work for each week. Academic Honesty & Behavior In the OCC Course Catalog for 2017-2017, page 22. the following is stated: Orange Coast College has the responsibility to ensure that grades assigned are indicative of the knowledge and skill level of each student. Acts of academic dis-honesty make it impossible to fulfill this responsibility. Faculty have a responsibility to ensure that academic honesty is maintained in their classroom. Students share that responsibility and are expected to refrain from all acts of academic dishonesty. Procedures for dealing with any violation of academic honesty will be followed. Additionally, the Student Code of Conduct and Board Policy Board Policy 5500 and Administrative Procedure 5500 shall be applied to incidents of academic dishonesty Examples of violation of Academic Honesty o Obtaining information from or communicating information to another student during an examination o Knowingly allowing another student to copy your work o Offering another person's work as your own o Taking an examination for another student or having someone take an examination for you o Sharing answers for collaborative project and take-home examination unless specifically authorized by the instructor o Using unauthorized material during an examination o Altering a graded examination or assignment and returning it for additional credit o Having another person or company do research writing and/or rewriting of an assigned paper or report o Misreporting or altering the data in laboratory or research project In addition, I will be randomly testing submitted assignments to detect plagiarism. I expect you to maintain a high level of academic honesty. Work submitted without proper attribution will result in a lowered grade. Cheating on quizzes or exams will result in course failure. Learning how to use Excel and Access, and learning how to program requires you to learn from the work of others. I encourage you to discuss various approaches to completing the homework with each other. Nevertheless, I still expect each of you to complete your assignments individually. In this regard, discussing the general method used to solve a problem is certainly acceptable. Please don't use the discussion board to ask for answers to quiz questions, and don't take another student's homework assignment and modify it. This is pretty easily detected while I grade your assignments. Disruptive Behavior You are entitled to an environment that encourages learning, as are all your fellow students. You should not behave in a manner that negatively impacts other class members. In a class room, such behavior includes hostile behavior such as yelling and screaming, as well as interrupting other students and attempting to inappropriately dominate the classroom. In an online class, disruptive behavior includes "flaming" or harassing email. I expect all of you to be polite, respectful, and helpful to your fellow students. If, in my judgment, your behavior negatively impacts the rest of the class, you may be subject to disciplinary action.
