Celebrate Earth Hour 2016 March 19, 2016 @ 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm Led by the Pittsburgh 2030 District participants, the Office of Mayor William Peduto, the City of Pittsburgh and the Green Building Alliance are partnering to engage Downtown and Oakland property owners and individuals in Earth Hour 2016. You are encouraged to participate by dimming or turning off your rooftop signage and other non-essential lighting in your facilities – and the lights at home – for one hour on Saturday, March 19th from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Click here to see the list of participating buildings in 2015. What is Earth Hour? Earth Hour is a global movement uniting people to protect the planet. Towards the end of March every year, Earth Hour brings together communities from across the world celebrating a commitment to the planet by switching off lights for one designated hour. Learn more at www.earthhour.org. When does Earth Hour take place? Earth Hour 2016 will be held on Saturday, March 19 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. in your local time zone. What does Earth Hour ask people to do? Earth Hour encourages individuals, businesses and governments to show leadership on environmental solutions through their actions, and to use Earth Hour as a platform to showcase to the world what measures they are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Earth Hour asks everyone to take personal accountability for their impact on the planet and make behavioral changes to facilitate a sustainable lifestyle. Taking the first step is as easy as turning off your lights. By switching off your lights for Earth Hour, you are acknowledging and celebrating your commitment to do something more for the planet that goes beyond the hour. How many cities/countries/landmarks took part in Earth Hour 2015? Earth Hour 2015 took place in more than 7,000 cities and towns in 172 countries and territories across all seven continents. Hundreds of millions of people switched their lights off for an hour and raised awareness about the event on social media. How can individuals participate in Earth Hour 2016? Turn off non-essential lights in your home on Saturday, March 19th from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Host a De-Light Pittsburgh party! Gather your friends, students, and teachers together in a house, restaurant, or park with a view of Downtown and Oakland and keep an eye out for the dramatic power down at 8:30 p.m. Ideal viewing locations include Mt. Washington, the North Shore, Flagstaff Hill, and the Schenley Oval. Take 3-5 high-res (non-professional) digital photos of your property or properties and share them on the social media handles below. How can my school participate in Pittsburgh?
