RECRUITMENT TOOLS
1. Use the Internet
a. School district web page to show current jobs
 Make sure to offer help with online applications.
 Dedicate a phone line – program phone answering service to
assist people in getting application information.
 Make sure that prospective applicants are responded to promptly
with accurate information.
 If applications are to be filled out online, make sure that the person
designated to answer phones is able to assist with online
instructions.
b. Use other websites:
 Craigslist
 Careerbuilder
 Monster
 Retirement.com
 Facebook
2. Use Employee Representatives for Personal Contact
a. Employee referrals
 Encourage the people who work around you as they quite often
have great candidates to refer.
 The average employee is going to recommend people they feel
could do the job.
 This is the least expensive and most effective way to get the word
out.
 Provide employees with informational brochures.
b. When prospective applicants call your department a designated
person should be ready to answer their questions and provide
information.
c. Bus Park-Outs
 This is a great way to make personal contact.
 Use banners on buses placed strategically in high traffic areas or
ad team to man bus while parked out with signs.
 It is a good idea to utilize different locations whenever possible to
get more exposure.

d. Fair Booth/Parades
This is another way to get your staff involved and make contact with
folks in a fun way.
 Locate an information booth at the end of a parade or at a county
or state fair.
 Set up a booth at a mini job fair which can be located, for example,
in shopping centers or at community college.
 Always provide employee representatives with brochures,
applications and important information.
3. Reach out to Parents
a. Some parents are interested in a schedule that closely matches their
child’s school schedule.
b. Use school newsletters - work with district personnel on available
space and timing for bus driver information.
c. Use your school lunch menu during the school year.
d. School electronic reader boards – most schools have available
space during the summer months.
4. Use Ads
a. Classified Ads and Mailings
 Place ads in local periodicals that target the audience you desire.
 If multiple classifieds are used, make sure to start each ad with a
different word in order to disburse ads throughout the weekly
listing.
 Display ads in highly visible locations of print media (i.e. pictures,
color font, etc.)
b. Radio Ads – build a custom ad for local needs.
c. Movie theater ads – work with local theaters.
d. Target mailings - for example:
 Church mailings – letter to parish identifying benefits of
employment for new members or those needing employment.
 Zip code mailings – use letter or district brochure.
 Door hangers – target high population areas (i.e. apartments,
housing developments)
 Food delivery flyers – pizza boxes, sandwich shops, etc. Work with
local businesses to possibly include your bus driver employment
brochure in a weeks worth of delivery orders.

 WorkSource recruitment centers
 Community college student resource offices
 Chamber of Commerce
 School Administration(s) Office job posting boards
 Laundromats
 Libraries
 Real Estate Offices
 Shopping centers
 Churches
c. Store receipt print-outs – information can be provided on the back of
local business receipts.
d. Yard / lawn signs – secure permission from property
owners to utilize for short periods of time. Use high visibility and
traffic locations. Do not forget to retrieve signs after a short period of
time.
6. Use Monetary Incentive Programs - there are many variations
a. Training incentive programs may outline an amount to be paid for
training. This includes timeframe of payment and duration of the
program.
b. Hire-on bonus programs may include a package of pre-paid or
reimbursed fees to the candidate.
 It may also include lump sums equitable to a wage for time spent
in training. (i.e. 30 hours of training x minimum wage)
