Stallions’ losing skid at 5

South Columbus lost three
games last week, including two
against Waccamaw Conference
foes, to see its losing streak reach
five games.
The Stallions, 5-13 overall and
2-8 in the conference, fell 50-44 at
South Brunswick on Tuesday and
60-42 at West Brunswick Friday.
South Columbus also dropped a
69-40 non-conference decision at
home against Fairmont last
Wednesday.
The
Stallions
visited
Whiteville last night and close
the regular season at home
against North Brunswick on Friday night. South Columbus defeated North Brunswick 55-52 on
Jan. 13.
• The Stallions led South
Brunswick 9-8 after the opening
quarter but trailed 25-20 at intermission. The Stallions narrowed
the deficit to two points (37-35)
entering the fourth period but
were outscored 13-9 in the final
eight minutes.
Senior forward Shyquan
Hemingway hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a team-high
14 points for the Stallions. Junior
post Pharoah McKever tallied 12.
Sophomore
forward
Dashaun Daniels (trey) and
sophomore guard Khalil Soles
both scored 5 points. Senior
guard Makeil Bell added 3
points. Kenny Rich and Diantre
Gerald had 2 points each while
Reggie Frink scored 1.
Justin Hill scored eight points
in the fourth quarter, including 6of-7 free throws, to finish with a
game-high 17 points for the Cougars.
• The first half was close, with
West Brunswick leading 27-24 at
intermission, before the Trojans
outscored South Columbus 16-7
in the third quarter to gain the
upper hand. West Brunswick held
a 17-11 advantage in the final
stanza. The Trojans won the game
on the free throw line, sinking 22of-32 compared to South Columbus’ 2-of-8.
Hemingway (trey) and
McKever topped the Stallions’
scoring with 10 points each. Frink
and Rich both tallied 5 while
Daniels and Gerald had 4 points
each. Bell and Shaquille Elleby
had 2 points each.
• Fairmont outscored the Stallions in every quarter, leading 2216 at halftime and 41-31 after the
third period before exploding in
the fourth (28-9). McKever and
Bell (trey) led the Stallions’ scoring with 10 points each. Daniels
had 7 (trey) while Hemingway
and Gerald both scored 5 points.
Frink had 3.
Fairmont had a large edge at
the foul line, sinking 15-of-23 (9for-11 in the 4th quarter), compared to 4-of-7 by South Columbus.

South Columbus’ girls basketball team defeated South
Brunswick (39-22) and Fairmont
(46-33) last week to pull within
one game of the .500 mark but a
34-30 loss at West Brunswick on
Friday left the Stallions with an
8-10 record (3-7 in Waccamaw
Conference).
South Columbus visited
Whiteville last night and hosts
North Brunswick Friday in the
regular-season finale.
• The Stallions outscored host
South Brunswick every quarter, leading 6-4 after the opening
stanza and 22-16 at halftime.
South Columbus increased its
lead to 10 points (28-18) after the
third period and held an 11-4
Loris High’s new softball
coach, Krystal Kiser, worked
with the Lady Lions during
practice sessions that started
last week. Kiser
demonstrated slap-hitting
and bunting techniques
before working on baserunning drills. The Lady
Lions held three days of
tryouts before Kiser selected
her new team. The 2012
softball season officially
starts March 7 against North
Myrtle Beach.

• South Columbus built a
seven-point (24-17) halftime edge
against visiting Fairmont last
Wednesday after leading 13-11
in the first quarter. The Stallions gained an 8-5 advantage in
the third period and outscored
Fairmont 14-11 in the final eight
minutes.
Three Stallions – Drayton,
Long and Newman – scored 12
points each. Kerra Shirley finished with 4 points while Kenna
Shirley and Jones both tallied
3.
• South Columbus led West
Brunswick 10-9 after the first
quarter but the game’s difference came in the second period
when the Lady Trojans held a 94 advantage. Both the third (5-5)
and fourth (11-11) quarters were
played evenly.
Long sank a pair of 3-pointers while tallying 11. Newman
and Kerra Shirley both scored 6
points. Drayton had 5 and Kenna
Shirley added 2 points.

Loris cagers lose in region
Loris’ boys and girls basketball teams suffered Region 8AA losses last week against
Waccamaw and Mullins.
Waccamaw’s boys doubled
the score (78-39) on visiting
Loris last Tuesday night.
Mullins defeated the host Lions 80-50 on Friday.
The Lady Lions dropped a
38-22 decision at Waccmaw and
fell 53-29 to Mullins on Friday.
Loris’ girls are 3-15 overall and
0-8 in the region.
• Seeking to edge Loris for the
region’s final state playoff
berth, Waccamaw (7-13, 3-5)
routed the Lions behind a career-high 33 points from Dejan
Frasier. The win avenged a 4845 Loris win on Jan. 12.
Sophomore
Dontae
Wideman led the Lions’ scoring with 14 points. Senior guard
Devante Claridy tallied 10 and
senior guard Trois Bennett
added 8 points.
Tyree Floyd and Damien
Ford both scored 5 points for
the Lions. Brendon Livingston
finished with 3 points and
Jahare Stone had 2.
Mullins led 42-26 at halftime
before outscoring the Lions 3824 following intermission.
Claridy’s 14 points led the Lions. Floyd scored 12 while
Wideman had 8. Ford and
Trevante Wilson both had 5
points. Bennett added 4 and
Latrez Chestnut had 2.
Loris battled visiting Dillon
tough on Monday night before
losing 72-71 on a 3-pointer by
Jalik Bethea with about three
seconds remaining in the game.
The loss left the Lions with a 415 overall record and a 2-7 region mark. Loris visits Aynor
on tonight (Wednesday).
Dillon (6-10, 4-4) led 21-18 after
the first quarter but the Lions
grabbed a 37-36 halftime edge.
Loris held a seven-point advantage (54-47) entering the fourth
period. The Wildcats outscored
the Lions 25-17 in the final eight
minutes. The winning basket
by Bethea ruined Loris’ Senior
Night.
Three-point baskets proved to
be the difference in the game.
Dillon sank seven shots from
behind the arc while Loris had
none. In addition to Bethea (14
points), Julius Saunders (10
points)
and
Shaqui
Cabbagestalk (6 points) made 2
treys each while Breon Page
(11 points) and Eri’reon Hayes
(9 points) both had one.
Quinton Smith led Dillon’s
scoring with a game-high 18
points.
Claridy topped Loris’ scoring
with 16 points while Wilson
tallied 13 and Floyd had 12.
Bennett contributed 9 points,
followed by Wideman with 7,
Kentrez Hilton with 6 and
Chestnut with 4. Ford and
Stephon Clark both scored 2
points.
• Waccamaw rolled to a 23-11
Stallion Club will meet Fri.
The South Columbus Stallion Club will meet Friday at
7 p.m. in the high school’s media center to pass out tickets
for the April raffle.
All members are urged to attend and help support this
major fund-raiser. Anyone who is unable to be present at
Friday’s meeting but wishes to purchase and/or sell
raffle tickets should contact a Stallion Club officer for
more details.
GSF loses 2 region games
Green Sea-Floyds’ boys basketball team suffered defeats
against Hemingway and Latta
last week.
The Trojans, 4-12 overall
and 2-8 in Region 8-A, visited
Carvers Bay last night and host
Creek Bridge in the final regular-season game Thursday
night.
• Latta led the host Trojans
18-14 after the first quarter Fri-
day night before GSF pulled
within 28-27 at intermission.
Both teams scored 13 points in
the third period but Latta held
an 11-10 edge in the final eight
minutes.
Junior forward Deandre
Collier scored a game-high 18
points to lead the Trojans.
Junior forward Devante
Dawkins tallied 15.

in the final stanza to gain a 16point victory. Sophomore
guard Ryneshia Bellamy
topped Loris’ scoring with 6
points, followed by senior forward Shanequa Bennett with 5
and junior guard La’Reba Jackson with 4. Nasrah Gill, Taylor
Littlejohn and Demisha
Phillips all scored 2 points
while Kadedra Cox had 1.
Mullins jumped to a 16-2 advantage after the first quarter
and led 30-5 at intermission.
Trailing 41-10 entering the
fourth period, Loris outscored
the Lady Auctioneers 19-12
down the stretch.
Jackson had 9 points for
Loris and Ryneshia Bellamy
scored 8. Cox contributed 5
points.

Stanley signs with UNCP
South Columbus High School senior Rontonio Stanley (seated, center) signed Thursday
to play football at UNC-Pembroke. Stanley, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards in
2010, was recruited as a running back. South Columbus athletic director-football coach
