The Nativity of John the Baptist Year B St Ignatius Church Kensington Terrace, Toowong 24th June 2012 JOHN THE BAPTIST— PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD The action of the Gospel of Luke begins where it will also end: in the Temple in Jerusalem, the traditional place of reconciliation between God and Israel. Beginning the story in the centre of Israel’s rituals and institutions shows continuity Holy Spirit Church Harriett Street, Auchenflower with the past. Likewise, the first characters to appear in the Gospel, the elderly priest, Zechariah, and his wife, Elizabeth, enter upon the scene as people “righteous before God, walking blamelessly in al the commandments and ordinances of the Lord”. But there are disturbing things as well. This elderly couple are childless. Their piety and observances has not shielded them from the great shame in their culture of being incapable of continuing the family line. So, for the first time, we sense a tension: on the one hand, conventional piety and righteousness; on the other, lack of blessings in a crucial area. The seed of a significant question is sown: what is God up to in the life of these people? Outside the sanctuary, the people are praying. The community is going to be involved in whatever happens to Zechariah. Their prayer shows openness to God. As so often in Luke’s Gospel, prayer forms the context of God’s intervention. Into this situation burst an angel, later identified as Gabriel. After reassuring the terrified priest, the angel tells him that his wife will bear him a son whose name is to be John. In a language rich with scriptural resonance, the angel describes the role the child is destined to play. He will be ‘great’ and in two points in particular his ministry will recall that of the prophet Elijah. First, in spirit and power of Elijah, he will exercise a ministry of conversation. Secondly, he will ‘go before’ the Lord to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. ~ Brendan Byrne sj. Challenging Questions Can you cry underwater? Once you’re in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity? Why is it that people say they ‘slept like a baby’ when babies wake up every two hours? If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from? Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride he sticks his head out the window? Why, why, why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting dead? Is there ever a date that mattresses are not on sale? OUR MISSION PRAYER We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius. Parish WEBSITE www.stignatiustoowong.org.au Current Newsletter now on our website!
