Many thanks to all those who made International Day a successful event. Our focus tent, Brazil, was a prequel for this year’s Soccer World Cup and the Capoeira performers gave an insight into Brazilian culture. Students rotated through the tents and experienced activities ranging from aboriginal dot painting in Oceania to drumming in Africa. There were folk tales from every continent, and the Sports Hall was a feast of delicious food from all around the world. Soccer Stars! The format was different this year and our community is talking about the pluses and minuses. While the event is fresh in your mind, send me an email, [email protected]. Tell me what you liked and where we can upgrade next year. Our vibrant, multinational, ever-changing community is brimful of ideas and the more we share, the better we can make this keynote event in our calendar. Meanwhile, back in class, Year 3 invited parents and fellow students to share their work on “Holiday Destinations”. They showed IMPORTANT DATES AND EVENTS DATE TERM 3 COMMENCES ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS 22nd April EARLY YEARS AND KS 1 MINI OLYMPICS 30th April PTA,PARENTS & STUDENTS KIDS MOVIE NIGHT 30th April ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF LABOUR DAY 1st May themselves to be very well prepared with their presentations. I would even go as far as saying it was even more hectic than normal because of International Day on Tuesday. Thank you to everyone that helped out on the day, with pre-preparations if you couldn’t be there and to those that sent in food dishes from your home countries. It was a fabulous day albeit exhausting for parents, teachers and students alike. Primary school photo order forms were sent out this week with a sample of your child’s photograph. Secondary photos will be emailed to parents during the course of next week. If you have any queries on the photos, didn’t receive your childs photo or don’t understand the order form, please e-mail [email protected]. I hope you all have a wonderfully relaxing holiday and if you are travelling, return safely. Regards Sarah YEAR 3 PROJECT ABOUT “HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS”. Larry the Lion’s Friday News School/Class News Page 3 EARLY YEARS A small collection of pictures showing the fun had by KG3JT on their outdoor trip this week! Earth Day Earth Day Celebration April 22nd is International Earth Day! Let’s celebrate! The International Earth Day was established about 45 years ago to increase people’s awareness of environmental issues humanity faces. By participating in Earth Day events, people support our planet and invest in its future. You can learn more about this here http://www.earthday.org/ At KISU students will be exposed to a range of Earth Day activities and we highly encourage you to continue this at home. We will also have a couple of recycling enterprises selling their products at KISU on Friday, so send some money with your child to support a good cause. Happy celebration! Earth Day Committee Larry the Lion’s Friday News Director’s Message Another term gone already. Time flies. It's been yet another busy week with International Day dominating events. We had a couple of visitors in the school that day, each being a Head of school in Europe. They were amazed at 2 things; firstly what wonderfully behaved and fun loving students we have, and secondly the huge range of countries from which our children come. One moment I was watching Early Years students dancing in grass skirts and drumming, later I saw the same children colouring pictures depicting somewhere in Europe, then they were sitting in a tent having stories read to them and later watching capoeira along with the rest of the school. I saw totem painting, football, frisbee, dancing, Welly throwing, Aboriginal dot painting and many more 'cultural' activities. By the end of the day students, teachers and parents looked exhausted. Thanks a million to our magnificent parents who yet again provided food from their country for our students to sample. I think some parents could open restaurants, such was the quality and quantity of food. Thank you so much. As with all events, we constantly try to improve things and afterwards we reflect on what went well and what can be improved. Our desire to ensure that students came first and foremost in food tasting led to the idea that having a food section away from where drivers and adults could dominate, would be good. It worked to a degree, but did cause frustration for some, when children were admitted, but not adults. We are working on the feedback and are looking for ways to improve things for next year. Time was also an issue, where some students had to rush their food tasting or wait until late before it was their turn. We'll work on that for next year too, along with all the other comments both positive and negative, so that we can make things even better. I have spent a lot of this week interviewing and looking through applications for teaching posts at KISU. Diversity is certainly a common theme and the range of people applying to work at KISU is remarkable. Finding the perfect fit between applicant and school is a very difficult task and to some degree an element of luck is required. We are lucky to have a team of educators from all over the world who bring with them expertise and experience impossible to find locally. The key though is to ensure that potential staff ‘buy into' what KISU stands for and this is articulated in our mission statement. Swim success Athletics Awards This week has definitely concentrated on the statement that at KISU we “Recognise, respect and celebrate the multicultural and international diversity of our school community". After the Easter break we will be looking at Earth Week and that relates to our mission to "Develop an awareness of our environmental responsibilities" And so it goes on, in our endless desire to provide the best education we can for our students. I hope you have a great spring holiday; travel safely and see you back at school on Tuesday 22nd April. Neil Wrightson Under 7 Sports Awards Page 4
