CHAPTER 13. INNER LOWER LEG
SELF PALPATION EXERCISES
The inner aspect of your lower leg is generally comprised of the
muscles that work to point or curl your foot and toes inward and
downwards.
The larger of your two lower leg bones is the inner bone, known
as the tibia or shin bone. The outer thinner bone is the fibula.
Run your hand along the front of your lower leg. You should
feel a bony ridge that extends from the front of your knee down
to your foot. This is the front of your tibia or shin bone and this
ridge is known as your tibial crest. Press down onto your shin
and shift your fingers towards the inner aspect of your leg. You
should feel your fingers fall off a bony edge. This edge is the
inner border of your tibia. Glide down this edge towards your
foot and you will find the large bony knob at the end of the bone.
This is your medial malleolus or inner ankle bone.
Place your fingers just to the inside of the inner border of your
tibia and feel the muscles contract as you move your foot inwards at the ankle joint. The tendons of these muscles create
the sling under your foot to support your arch and help with your
balance.
