King crowned again EWSELLS PARK STUD's King Of The Danes resumed his winning ways at Hamilton Park on June 5 when running out the game winner of the Hamiltonian Handicap over nine furlongs. It was a welcome return to form for the Dansili gelding, who was chalking up his fourth career success in the process. As a juvenile, King Of The Danes (pictured above under Barry Lusted) won a Lingfield maiden over seven furlongs on his third start in mid-December. After a highly promising run on his debut as a three-year-old at Musselburgh at the beginning of May 2013, when he finished second to another Newsells graduate in Romantic Settings, he hit a rich vein of form later that month. Partnered by Franny Norton on both occasions, he landed a Class 4 Ascot handicap over a mile before bolting up in a similar event at Goodwood over nine furlongs. Those wins saw his rating shoot up to 89, but he couldn't add to his tally in two further runs last autumn. King Of The Danes made his reappearance over a mile and a quarter at Ripon in April, running off a mark of 87. He cut little N ice there, though he did run slightly better in mile events at Beverley and Ripon in May. At Hamilton, King Of The Danes was set to race off a mark of 80, allowing him to carry top weight in a Class 4, 0-80 handicap restricted to older horses, of which seven went to post. This was the feature event on the afternoon card. Jim Goldie's Lomitas gelding, Another For Joe, a recent Ayr winner, headed the market at 3/1 while Lord Franklin traded at 7/2. King Of the Danes was next best at 4/1, and was again partnered by Franny. Lord Franklin made the early running in this nine-furlong event, with Another Franny Norton For Joe and King Of The Danes matching strides racing uphill round Hamilton's loop. It looked set to be a close finish as first Shouranour and then Never Forever loomed up on the outside. King Of the Danes asserted well, however, powering into a lead inside the final furlong and holding on well to resist the very late challenge of Dakota Canyon by a neck. Never Forever took the minor placing, beaten a further threequarters of a length. King Of the Danes is by Dansili out of the Newsells Park mare, Our Queen of Kings. Among her seven winners from eight foals to have run, the dam produced Spinning Queen, winner of the Sun Chariot Stakes (Group 1) for Barry Hills in 2004, when she defeated that great racemare, Soviet Song. She has also produced a Sea The Stars filly who was sold at Tattersalls December Foal Sales last year for a cool 320,000gns. King Of The Danes also has an unraced two-year-old half-sister by Montjeu in training with Sir Michael Stoute (Queen Margherita). Being so well connected, it's hardly surprising that King Of The Danes is ready to show his ability again. www.markjohnstonracing.com 20
