Woodpecker “Pecking” Solution
Bob and Paulette Bliss,
property owners here at
Innsbrook, have a solution
to the pesky woodpeckers.
Bob says, “I don’t know
about the rest of you out
here in the heart of Missouri
nature but we have hordes
of woodpeckers (well, two
pair) who have taken a liking
to various corners of our
chalet. We tried aluminum
foil streamers and various
other scarecrows, including
(if the birds started in
while we were in residence) pounding on the walls. Pounding
on the walls worked, but of course it’s not a solution. Wall
pounders are expensive. And then we noticed that the birds
only worked on certain corners, and then we thought of nature
books we’d read about woodpeckers and how they locate their
food by sound, and we thought of our clocks, two on walls and
one on a chest of drawers, all three of them right next to the
woodpeckers’ favorite corners. So, do ticking clocks (they all
tick) sound like juicy grubs and beetles doing their thing deep
in a tree trunk? So now when we leave the chalet we take our
three ticking clocks and place them on a bed under the blankets.
We believe that the resulting silence has sent the woodpeckers
in search of easier pickings.”
