Is your computer protected? November 3, 2010 With the recent outbreak of computer viruses, it is especially important to make sure your antivirus software is up to date and the latest Microsoft Windows patches have been installed on your computer. Most malicious software (malware) is installed on a machine without the user realizing it. For example, malware can be installed simply by opening an email, visiting a legitimate website or even closing or cancelling a pop-up window. These are ways malicious software can circumvent your antivirus program. Symptoms If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, your computer might be infected. Your computer is running slowly Your computer is locking up or not responding Your computer restarts on its own Applications aren’t working properly Never click anything inside a pop-up window. Instead, use the keyboard combination ALT and F4. Holding ALT and pressing F4 will close the window that is on top (which should be the malicious pop-up). Resources Download and install Windows Updates Protect your computer We strongly suggest following the steps below to help keep your computer safe. Make sure your antivirus software is up to date. Pay attention and respond quickly to any alerts from your antivirus program. Promptly install Windows Updates. Your computer should be set up to alert you when new updates are available.
