Touch – Senior
The Senior touch team travelled to Palmerston North on Saturday to compete in the Regional competition with the
goal being to win the tournament or at least finish in the top three to qualify for Nationals in December. With an
early start for the boys our first game against Manukura wasn’t at the level required going down 8-5. Thankfully,
they showed great resilience and bounced back from this loss, beating a strong New Plymouth Boys side 8-3. This
meant we had to win the final game well to qualify first for the semi-finals and a possible place in the nationals. The
team managed to beat Whanganui 9-3. At the completion of round robin play we were top of our pool meaning a
semi-final against Palmerston North Boys. This was a tight and exciting game with the lead see sawing between both
teams. It ended in a draw and the drop off occurred with both teams going down to 5 players with a right of reply.
Both teams scored then it was down to the first team to score for the win. Nervously, we managed to score and win
the semi. The boys had achieved their dream and created a legacy by making the nationals later in the year. In the
final we went down to St Pat’s Stream 11-5. I was very proud of the effort from the boys, making nationals was a
huge achievement. Thank you to our coach Damian Wanoa and to all our supporters on the day.
Touch - Junior
Week 2 – Game 1 vs St Pat’s Silverstream A, Game 2 vs St Pat’s Silverstream 2.
Unfortunately, nothing went well for the St Bernard’s boy’s in the game against St Pat’s Stream A losing 5-0. Theo
Van Ooyen showed enough to earn himself another Coaches Man of the Match performance with his enthusiasm on
both offence and defence. Jono Little played with good speed and was unlucky not to score on the limited touches
he had.
The second game against St Pat’s Stream B was a complete turnaround. The leaders stood up and showed why they
are in the team. The “go forward” was the key to the win, with everyone getting involved. Josh and Robert Patterson
opened up and played with confidence, Josiah Patea played with a lot enthusiasm, as did Cameron Forsyth showing
an all-round performance. Jono Little scored his first of two tries with blistering speed, scooting away without a hand
on him. Tana Rangiwhetu showed his Man of the Match performance with some fancy footwork, scoring four
individual tries. TK Wanoa closed out the team’s tally of tries to complete the 7-2 win.
The team now head into their final round against HIBS, with the winner earning the right to meet St Pat’s Stream in
the finals.
Golf
Division 1 team of Daniel Searle and Joshua Furjes-Crawshaw had a victory over HVHS, beating them by 6 stableford
points, final result 32 – 26. Daniel and Joshua will play in the Division 1 final next week.
Division 2 team of Jacob Horne and Reon Manuele lost to St Pat’s Stream by 9 stableford points. Final result 34 – 25.
Basketball
St Bernard’s entered a team for the first College Sport Wellington 3x3 Basketball
tournament which involved seven teams from within the region. The team was
organised by Kitiona Vaofusi, who recruited Noah Lindstrom, Planchie Awatere and
Dei Gatkek.
The team made it through to the Semi-finals in 3rd spot, after losing close matches
against Wellington College in overtime and Rongotai College during round-robin.
A semi-final against Wellington College, was another tough battle, this looked like it
was going St Bernard’s way, leading right through to the 4th minute.
Wellington College eventually finding their range from the outside to seal
victory.
Paraparaumu College were our next opponent in the decider for 3rd and 4th
place. This was a low key game with St Bernard’s easily taking 3rd place in
the tournament.
Congratulations goes to Vaofusi, with his winning Dunk, sealing the Slam
Dunk Competition. His Thunderous, power dunk which shook the rim,
made the crowd roar with approval.
Volleyball
The Junior Volleyball team had an exciting five set victory over St Pats Stream meaning they qualify for the semi-finals
next week against Naenae.
Our senior volleyball team played their semi-final against St Pat’s Stream on Friday evening. Unfortunately, our boys
couldn’t deliver the same performance as the previous week, and were beaten in three sets. We now play off for 3rd
and 4th against Naenae, a win here will put us in the Premiership competition in Term 4. Let’s go boys, finish the
season on a high.
Futsal
This half of the season finished with plenty of drama but ultimately very successfully.
SBC 1. The team was playing for the 5th/6th position in the senior 1 grade. We were up 2-1 after 15 minutes when
the unthinkable happened. Jerome Skelton had the ball and was ready to distribute it when an opposition player slid
into him from the side, causing a nasty injury. Due to the injury the game was called off with the team ending up 5th
in Division 1 which is a great result.
SBC 2. This team was also in a playoff for 5th and 6th in Div 2. They came away with an 8-2 victory against St Pat’s
Stream. The close ball skills of this team are a joy to watch. Jhonatan Yepes Osorio appears to have the ball attached
to his shoe laces and his shooting off both feet is tremendous. Eli Polaczuk has developed tremendously and now
fronts up confidently with players twice his size and his speed on the turn keeps the opposition bewildered. Jet
Zawadas’ defensive qualities are tremendous and his covering abilities are second to none. Nay James is the unsung
hero of the team. His play is not flashy but his ball distribution and tenacity off the ball is excellent. This week we had
Baxter King playing whose play was extraordinary. His strength in the tackle, his positional play and his ability to
shoot from distance with power and precision was excellent. Braden Longstaff is a goalkeeper of immense ability
who shows courage and tenacity, which inspires the other players.
Cricket
St Bernard’s 1ST XI hosted St Pat’s Stream 2ND XI. After losing
the toss and being put into bat we were dismissed for a
disappointing total of 83. A disciplined performance from the
St Pat’s Stream bowlers never gave our batsman a chance to
get going.
St Pat’s Stream batsmen were never tested and chased down
the total only 3 wickets down and 12 overs to spare.
All in all a disappointing end to a disappointing season for us.
This leaves us second last on the table and in a playoff for 7th
and 8th. Not a true reflection of the ability of the team, rather a
reflection of the effort and discipline shown by us throughout the year.
Another tough day at the office on Saturday for the St Bernard's 2nd XI playing HIBS 3rd XI at Trentham Memorial
Park. HIBS won the toss and asked St Bernard's to bat first. Batting again proved difficult for the team ultimately
being dismissed for 68 with Will Eastham top scoring with 18 runs. HIBS reached the target in 17 overs to win by 8
wickets.
The junior boys were away to Paraparaumu College. Paraparaumu were sent into bat and were all out for 150 off 39
overs, with their captain scoring a very good 93. A good effort after being 47/6 at 20 overs. SBC bowlers of note
were Josh Carey (3-14) and Conor Stewart (3-11). Everyone in the team participated in a good fielding effort with 7
catches, Sam Fisher taking two of them. The score was chased down with 50 coming up after 10 overs when the first
wicket fell. The 100 came up in the 20th over and the game finishing at152/2 after 26 overs. Yanula Silva who opened
the batting was 72 not out.
