Have you seen this Frog? Kelso’s Choice Management Program Mrs. Laurie Provancal Dr. Lisette Arnold School Social Worker School Psychologist Dear Parents and Guardians, During the school year, we will be visiting your child’s class to talk to them about Kelso. Kelso is a frog that assists children to identify and solve problems between people. According to Kelso, there are two sizes of problems; big and small. Big Problems are scary, dangerous and can result in getting hurt. Children should not attempt to solve big problems on their own. They should look for help from an adult they trust. Small Problems are not very dangerous and not very scary. Children can work to solve their own small problems using Kelso’s solutions (see solution wheel). Kelso asks children to try at least two of his choices before going and asking for adult assistance. Parent Tip: If a child brings a small problem to you without trying to solve it on their own, the best thing to say is “Is this a big problem or a small problem?” Is it very scary or dangerous? (No) Okay please use one or two of Kelso’s choices or try to solve this on your own. I’d be happy to hear how you solved problems afterwards. After your child has solved the problem, be sure to provide positive feedback for a job well done. Kelso’s program empowers children to identify and solve their own problems. Teachers and parents have reported a decrease in tattling/telling tales after using the program. Children appreciate having options from which to choose and to be given opportunity to positively affect their own environment. All of the children at Pheasant Ridge will get to know Kelso and as the program is school-wide from grades K-3. If you use this language at home, your child will be exposed to a consistent response and will begin to respond to conflicts with more independence. A solution wheel will be sent home with each student as part of the program. With consistency, all of our students will become independent problem solvers!
