YEOMAN PARK SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Autumn Term 2012 NEWS FROM THE EXECUTIVE HEAD TEACHER Primary Team News 2 The beginning of the new academic year has got off to a great start. The workmen who were in during the summer holidays have completed all the alterations requested and the new classroom arrangements are working really well. Secondary Team News 3 We have welcomed some new pupils/students in school and they too are settling in nicely. Inside this issue: Upper Team News 4/5 Extended Services—Summer Play Scheme 6/7 Can you help us? 8 Friends of Yeoman Park Our visitors from Denmark really enjoyed their visit last term. They had an action packed week staying at Center Parcs and visiting Nottingham Castle, Chatsworth House etc.; You can see much more of this on www.youtube.com and type ‘yeoman park school’ into the search panel Planned for this school year is a further visit from Bamboozle Theatre Group with their new production ‘As Light as a Feather’. Staff are still working on the Curriculum. This year we will be looking at the content of our new curriculum and we want to try and ensure that we develop a curriculum that is relevant to our pupils/students and prepares them for their lives after they leave school. The feedback you gave us suggested that you wanted a greater emphasis on life skills/communication so we are looking to ensure that the new curriculum addresses this. Following our consultations regarding Home/ School diaries, the majority of you wanted to keep the present system of having a ‘book’ so we have introduced a new type of home/school diary which I am sure you will agree is much nicer and longer lasting! PRIMARY TEAM NEWS Class 3 have been enjoying the fine weather with some outside exploration. They have been experimenting with the force of water in a variety of ways. They found out what will float, how to make it sink and how to force water through it and of course got very wet in the process! Pupils in Primary School have been enjoying a magic carpet journey in the Learning Environment in the hall. They have travelled across India experiencing many delights. They have explored colourful cloths, spices and fruit at the market. They have met a snake charmer and danced to Indian music. Page 2 SECONDARY TEAM NEWS Welcome to the Secondary Team! We also have a new project in progress, trying to transform the small courtyard outside the classroom . We have been collecting old pallets and we hope to transform this into a bug hotel by adding all kinds of different habitats for insects. We can then use this for some topic work later in the year. Page 3 YEOMAN PARK SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Autumn Mencap Changemakers Project This term Yeoman Park Senior School is working with MENCAP who have provided funding for the project. The Changemakers Project is aimed to give students a voice and to look at issues that affect people with a learning disability. The project kicked off on Wednesday with a drumming session with Biant Singh and T-Shirt making thus giving students a voice. Students were asked to bring in objects important to them that expressed their identity and this ranged from a large Giraffe to Buzz Lightyear! Over the next few weeks students will work with Stephen John on mask making, an art project, Debbie Hederwick on expressive dance and The Adventure Services. All work is aimed towards giving students a way of expressing themselves and having a voice.
