Harbour Court Geared
For Biennial Race Week
Photo: Dan Nerney
It happens every two years. NYYC Race Week at
Newport presented by Rolex returns to Harbour Court
Saturday, July 14th for 9 days of exciting racing plus a little
socializing with sailors from across the country. The
Bastille Day start features two days of competition among
Classic 12 Metre, 6 Metre, and Herreshoff “S” class yachts.
On Wednesday there will be the usual race around lovely
Conanicut Island that is open to all yachts at no fee.
Thursday to Sunday will see big-time racing among the
One-Design and IRC classes plus the lively competition
in the J/105, Melges 32 classes and PHRF “Navigator
Races” on Saturday and Sunday.
Race Week social events are open to all members. From
Wednesday through Sunday the post-race Hospitality Villa
will feature daily awards, complimentary snacks and daily
race footage. The week will be highlighted by a Cocktail
J/30s competing in one-Design races during the 2010 Race Week
Reception overlooking the harbor followed by an Owners
and Guests Dinner in the Main Dining Room on July 14th; a casual party for the Around the Island Race participants and Race Week
registrants with chit cocktails, complimentary grill stations and music by “Sweet Tooth and the Sugar Babies” on July 18th; and the Rolex
Gala, with cocktails and dinner in the Main Event Tent, on Saturday, July 21st. See page 6 for reservation information.

Among Highlights Of 156th Annual Cruise
Commodore Robert C. Towse’s Blue Yankee leads the fleet out of New London, Ct
on the 2011 Annual Cruise.
With a Cocktail Reception following the Captain’s Meeting on August 3rd and the
Opening Banquet at Harbour Court on August 4th featuring a preview of our visit to “Old
Ironsides” on its 200th anniversary by Anne Grimes, president of the USS Constitution
Museum, a record number of NYYC members are expected on hand for the start of
our 156th Annual Cruise. We will be disbanding in Boston waters on Sunday, August
11th following a festive dinner at the USS Constitution Saturday evening. There will be
intense competition for the Queen’s Cup on August 4th and for the Astor Cup races on
August 10th. In between, there will be Squadron Runs, predicted log-races for power
boats, family-style Corinthian races and a Lay Day in scenic Marblehead for everyone’s
enjoyment. Needless to say, there will be lots of socializing as we make stops at the
historic ports of Marion, Duxbury, Marblehead and Rockport en route to Boston,
including a Flag Officers Reception on our August 8th Lay Day in Marblehead.
It will be a memorable week for everyone so, if you haven’t yet signed up, you are encouraged to do so on the NYYC website ASAP.
Members interested in attending the Saturday dinners at Harbour Court and/or the USS Constitution Museum who are unable to join
the Annual Cruise should contact Daniela Burton to determine space availability and charges at: [email protected].

Summer Hours At 44th Street
Begin July 2nd
Clubhouse Manager Mark Jezierski advises that the 44th Street
Club House will begin its usual summer hours on Monday, July
2nd. The Grill Room will be open Monday-Friday for breakfast

Food and beverage service will be discontinued after July
27th. However, members may obtain guest cards from the
Quartermaster to take meals at the Harvard, Cornell, Penn

the following Monday, September 10th, the Grill Room and Bar

It should be noted that the Special Events Director Kathleen
Nykolyn is delighted to arrange wedding receptions, parties,
meeting and similar events during the summer months. This
includes evening affairs and the August closing weeks if the
affairs are of sufficient size to justify bringing in the needed staff.

Carina rounding Fastnet Rock in 2011 Fastnet Race.
Wednesday, September 26th
Rear Commodore A. Rives Potts has graciously agreed
to share his experience with members and guests during
the upcoming Club Night presentations at both 44th Street
(September 26th) and Harbour Court (November 17th) relating
the captivating story of one of the most unprecedented years
in the life of any yacht, that of his 48 foot 1969 McCurdy &
Rhodes-designed sloop, Carina.
NY
Coming off winning the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy in the
2010 Newport-Bermuda Race in early summer 2011, Carina
commenced a year without precedent. She competed in the
Transatlantic Race in July and the Rolex Fastnet Race in
August, where she won her class. She was then sailed by her
crew back across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal and
across the South Pacific to Australia for the Rolex SydneyHobart Race. After the race, she was sailed across the Indian
Ocean, around Cape Horn and up the Atlantic for the third
time in a year, to compete in the 2012 Newport-Bermuda Race.
Wednesday, September 26th will be a very special evening at 44th
Street that you will not want to miss.
Chit cocktails will be served at 1800 followed by the presentation
and dinner. Reservations are $75 per person, all inclusive.

The topic of each meeting will be a different maritime work by
Joseph Conrad. The discussions will alternate between shorter
books such as Typhoon, Youth, and Nigger of the Narcissus and
longer works, including Lord Jim, Nostromo, and Mirror of the
Sea. Each session will be held between 1800 and 1930. Light
refreshments will be served, and the Grill Room will be open
until 2100 for those who wish to remain for dinner. The group
will meet several times during the year beginning in October.

Dress For The Summer Season:
Find Logo Items At The Club Store
Members participating in the Annual Cruise and other NYYC events are encouraged to wear Club uniforms and logos as might
be appropriate. You should find everything you need in the Club Store catalog: uniforms, caps, ties, scarves insignia and the Club
burgee–plus clothing, houseware and gift items bearing the NYYC logo.
The catalog also has many general-use items for your home and boat as well as presents for your family, friends and summer hosts.
Moreover, you can be certain you will always be dressed in style with the catalog’s clothing selections, such as men’s and women’s
sweaters, jackets, sailing and polo shirts, shorts and shoes.
If you don’t have a printed copy of the catalog handy, see the Club website. The on-line catalog lets members view catalog items,
select sizes and colors and place orders whenever it is convenient. Or go to the Members’ side of the web at: www.nyyc.org/clubstore
and log-in.

Saturday-Sunday
July 28th-29th
Following the success of the inaugural Member Regatta last
year, this member-only event has been expanded to two days,
Saturday-Sunday July 28th-29th, with members, their spouses
and children competing in a series of races in the Club’s fleet
of 13 Sonars. Crews will be rotated to assure that everyone
sails an equal number of races during the Regatta. Designed
for sailors at all levels, it’s guaranteed to be a fun weekend.
Thursday, September 13th
Monk Saki monkeys, river dolphins, alligators, horned
screamers, anaconda, tarantula, stinging mosquitoes, deadly
snakes and all kinds of other rare fish, birds, flora and fauna
were encountered by the 53 NYYC members and guests on
their March Expedition to the Peruvian headwaters of the
Amazon. Some of the participants will join us on September
13th for a Club Night Recap on their adventure with special
guest speaker Carlos Rodrigo Romero Franco, a Lindblad
Expeditions naturalist, lecturer and expedition leader. With
a doctorate in biology and very fluent in English, Sr. Romero
has been an Expedition Leader for Lindblad to the Upper
Amazon and Galapagos since 2005. By evening’s end, his
presentation will leave you feeling that you were there, too.
A few sailing spaces remain and interested members
are encouraged to sign-up online at:
http://nyyc.org/nyycmember-regatta-jul28-29.
Chit cocktails begin at 1830 in the Arcadia Room followed by
the presentation at 1900 and dinner at 1945. Reservations are
$60 per person, all inclusive.
A dinner is planned for Saturday evening and all members
are invited to attend. Details are being finalized and will be
published online and via e-mail ASAP.

Reciprocity With Other Clubs
The Club’s reciprocal arrangements are strictly limited to a few
select clubs around the world. Members wishing to visit any of
these clubs should contact the Secretary’s Office to determine
the current relationship and protocol and to obtain a formal
letter of introduction.
We will not grant reciprocal privileges to a member of a
reciprocal club who has a residence or place of business within
75 miles of New York City or Newport. Similarly, NYYC
members who maintain a residence or place of business
in proximity to a reciprocal club may be denied reciprocal
privileges by that club.
To Attract Many Members
For October Weekend
Saturday-Sunday, October 20th-21st
The Heritage Coordination Committee and the Special
Events Committee expect many members will come from
afar for the weekend of October 20th-21st when the combined
committees will bring the inaugural Heritage Weekend to
Harbour Court under the leadership of co-chairs Peter J.
Sweetser, Edwin G. Fischer, Clayton G. Deutsch and Steven
M. McInnis. This will be a members-only event celebrating
the Club’s 168-year heritage in a series of presentations,
displays and events from the Model, Fine Arts and Library
Committees as well as a gala dinner-dance on Saturday
evening. Please save the date for this important and exciting
event and stay tuned for more details in the next issue of the

Invitational Cup Qualifying Series
Follows Labor Day Weekend
Tuesday, September 4th will see the arrival of Corinthian teams
from some of the country’s top yacht clubs for 5 days of intense
competition to earn the right to represent the U.S. in the 2013
Invitational Cup at Harbour Court on September 7th -14th. The
two person teams will race against each other in the traditional
one-design Sonars and the new J70 high performance Keelboats.
Last year’s biennial Invitational Cup held at Harbour Court
brought 22 yacht club teams from 16 countries covering 6 continents. The Royal Canadian Yacht Club was the winner, defeating
the NYYC team representing the U.S. It is expected that competition in the Qualifying Series as well as in the Championship
next year will be even more intense.

TV Coverage Expected For
Still Taking Reservations
NYYC’s Olympic Sailors

Although the specific schedule has not yet been announced,
live coverage of all six men’s and four women’s Olympic sailing events is promised by NBC and its affiliated cable networks.
This means the success of NYYC members Anna Tunnicliffe in
Women’s Match Racing, Amanda Clark in Women’s 470, Erik
Storck and Trevor Moore in the 49er Class and Stuart McNay in
the Men’s 470 can be followed when the competition begins in
the waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour (120 miles
south of London) on Sunday, July 29th. (In addition, NYYC
member Paul Callahan will be competing in the Sonar races in
the Paralympics, September 1st-6th.)
TV viewers should be able to find the programming for sailing events a few days prior by going to the several websites for
2012 Olympic Sailing and clicking on TV. The websites will be
updated on an ongoing basis as weather conditions and other
factors cause changes in starting times.

Court docks are prohibited by law but 14 Club moorings are
available for yachts up to 65 feet. Call Waterfront Manager

For rides beyond Brenton Cove or late night launch service,
contact Oldport at (401) 847-9109.

In part because there has been some unexpected cancellations,
the Cruising Committee is still taking reservations for cabins
on the National Geographic Sea Bird for the eight day/seven
night Expedition Cruise to explore Baja California and the
Sea of Cortez. This truly unique Mexican adventure begins
Saturday, April 6, 2013. We will be accompanied by a Lindblad
naturalist as we view wildlife on both land and sea and enjoy
swimming, snorkeling and other waterborne activities. There
is no fixed itinerary. The intent is to give participants a truly
unusual experience and to see wonders of nature that they
might not otherwise encounter in a lifetime. For details, see the
Club’s website or contact Daniela Burton.
