That morning I had an appointment with Frank Gehry, an architect from the city building department. I wanted to
build a housing project and the plans needed his approval. I was driving quite fast and became lost in a maze of oneway streets. I never like being late, so I was paying more attention to finding my way back downtown than to the
road. That's when I felt a hard bump. I stopped and saw a large dog, apparently dead, on the road. I ran to the
nearest house, rang the bell and a young woman opened the door. "I've killed a dog and I need to call the police," I
said. "Can I use your phone?" I asked. She looked out and said calmly, "That's my dog."
After the officers had left she offered me a cup of coffee. I accepted. There were some letters on the kitchen table
and I saw that one of them was addressed to "Frank Gehry." I was astonished and asked what her husband's name
was. "Frank Gehry", she answered- "Great," I thought. "I need this man's approval, and I've just killed his dog."
When I arrived at the city hall a few minutes later, Frank was coming down the stairs with an angry look on his
face. When he reached me, he embraced me and said loudly, "You've done us a great favour. Our dog was old and
blind and had cancer, and neither my wife nor I had the courage to put him to sleep. Thank you so much for what
you've done."

ANSWER QUESTIONS 1-3 ACCORDING TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN THE TEXT. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.
1 Why was the narrator going to meet Frank Gehry?
To build a housing project for whose plans he needed Frank Gehry's approval.
2 How did the accident happen? Explain.
He was driving too fast because he didn't want to be late, and as he wasn't sure which way to go he wasn't
paying much attention to the road. That's why he didn't see the dog coming and ran over it.
3 What does Frank Gehry thank the narrator for? Explain.
Frank Gehry thanked the narrator for killing the dog since it was very ill, and he and his wife couldn't find
the courage to do it themselves.
ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES
FROM THE TEXT, OR USE YOUR OWN WORDS.
4 The woman felt nervous when she knew about the accident.
FALSE: "She looked out and said calmly, "That's my dog." (Line 6).
5 The narrator felt worried when he discovered who the owner of the dog was.
FALSE: "I was astonished" (Line 8). He is "astonished" not "worried"
TRUE: "Great," I thought. "I need this man's approval, and I've just killed his dog." (Line 9). We can infer
through these words that he is worried.
II * USE OF ENGLISH (3 points; questions 6-9, 0.25 points each; 10-13, 0.5 points each)
6 GIVE ONE OPPOSITE OF "approval" (noun) AS IT IS USED IN THE TEXT (LINES 2,9).

It was such a long race that I couldn't finish it.
12 GIVE A QUESTION FOR THE UNDERLINED WORDS:
His sister's boyfriend was quite funny.
Whose boyfriend was quite funny?
13 TURN THE FOLLOWING SENTENCE INTO THE PASSIVE VOICE:
Someone stole my wife's car yesterday.
My wife's car was stolen yesterday.
III * PRODUCTION (3 points)
14 WRITE A COMPOSITION OF APPROXIMATELY 120 WORDS. FOCUS STRICTLY ON THE TOPIC.
Have you ever seen or had an accident? Describe what happened.
Yes, I remembered once when I was driving home after a long day at school. No special day. The usual
lessons in the morning, lunch break and a two-hour swimming training session in the afternoon. I was exhausted
and eager to get home. However, I still had to go through my driving lesson.
I started off the car and slowly began to follow my driving teacher's instructions when suddenly I noticed
a bump. We got out of the car. It had been an ugly black cat which was now lying on the floor, guts and
everything splashed around. Disgusting!
We quickly got back into the car. I hadn't driven two blocks further when suddenly the car in front of me
slowed down without warning. I had no choice. Since I wasn't able to avoid the collision I tried to brake to
minimize the impact, but instead, I stepped on the gas and crashed into the other vehicle.
No one was to blame for the accident, but it would never have happened if the other driver had been
alert.
Very kindly and after filling out several forms, statements and whatnot, my teacher gave me a ride
home. He insisted that I shouldn't drive again for the day under the pretence of being in shock and nervous.
Nevertheless, I remember feeling perfectly right.
And since then, I am still figuring out why, I have had such a hard time getting back to my driving
lessons. My teacher has a very busy schedule. I have even tried other driving schools but there seems to be no
place available for me. Am I jinxed?

More than 45,000 lives a year could be saved if everyone began eating meat no more than two or three times
a week, health experts claim today. Widespread change to low-meat diets would stop 31,000 early deaths from heart
disease, and 9,000 from cancer, according to new analyses of British eating habits. Dramatically reduced meat
consumption would slow down climate change and deforestation in South America, where rainforests are being
chopped down to raise cows, which are later exported to Europe.
Eating too much meat, particularly processed meat, is unhealthy because it can involve consuming more fat
than official guidelines recommend. "We don't need to go vegetarian to look after ourselves and our planet, but we
do need to cut down on meat," said Peter Bennett. "While the government has ignored the environmental aspect of
meat and dairy consumption, it can't ignore the lives that would be saved by switching to less and better meat."
Meat producers criticised the report. "The vast majority of consumers eat less than average
recommendations of red meat already," said Chris Lamb. "It is over-simplistic to say that changing one element of
the diet can have such a dramatic result. Red meat has a valuable role to play as part of a healthy diet." Jen Elford
of the Vegetarian Society, added: "Of course less meat is better than more, but we can't start solving the
environmental and health problems without moving away from animal protein."

ANSWER QUESTIONS 1-3 ACCORDING TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN THE TEXT. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.
1 How are the rainforests affected by meat consumption?
A lot of trees in rainforests are cut down to make room for more grazing areas for cows. This fact increases
the risk of deforestation and it affects climate change.
2 Why is eating too much meat so bad?
It is an unhealthy habit because meat, and processed meat in particular, contains a lot of fats and a
balanced diet must not be based solely on fats according to experts.
3 What arguments do meat producers use to defend themselves? Give two.
(The text provides three arguments)
1) Most consumers already eat less red meat than recommended.
2) There is no way to know for sure if changing one element of the diet could have such major effects.
3) We shouldn't underestimate the importance of red meat on a healthy diet.

14 WRITE A COMPOSITION OF APPROXIMATELY 120 WORDS. FOCUS STRICTLY ON THE TOPIC.
What can you do to have a healthy lifestyle?
If you run a quick search on the Internet about this topic, thousands of tips on how to lead a healthy
lifestyle will pop up. Who can claim to be uninterested in health? Who would dare to?
When it comes to the question of what is more important, nutrition is clearly "the" issue. Most of the
times we pair health with nutrition, even though sometimes you don't even know what to do because experts
on nutrition change so easily their preferences that we usually get disoriented and finally eat the first thing that
comes into our hands or suggested as health builders. Remember olive oil, which used to be censored from
diets in the seventies, and the rediscovery of it as one of the main ingredients of the Mediterranean diet and a
healthy anticholesterol fighter.
But apart from that, a good nutritious diet should keep a balance between all basic groups of food:
proteins, fats and carbohydrates, with a good contribution of vitamins and minerals. In order to achieve this
balance it is advisable to limit food and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat and alcohol. Moreover, do not
overeat, and always get up from the table feeling you could eat a little more.
Improving the way we eat is not sufficient per se. The importance of exercise shouldn't be played down.
Then, watch less TV and be active for at least two and a half hours a week, giving more importance to activities
that raise your breathing and heart rates and that strengthen your muscles and bones. All in all, physical activity
helps us to maintain weight, reduce the risk of high blood pressure and several diseases or conditions such as
heart attack, stroke, or some forms of cancer, osteoporosis, depression and anxiety.
Better still, if you work up outdoors and get a chance of getting in the sunshine, you'll be getting an
extra dose of vitamin D. But watch out, get some protection in order to avoid sunburn and wear a cap and
sunscreen. Your skin will be thankful to you forever, and maybe you could avoid some types of skin cancer slow
down the aging process.
If you thought all the above fitted the bill and you had already done more than enough, you were
wrong. Here go some more sundry tips. Avoid smoking or breathing other people's smoke. Everybody knows the
destructive and widely proven effects of smoking. Why it is still legal is a mystery only the gods know about, and
probably so does the tobacco industry.
What else? Let's see. Of course, here go some more useful advice: stress management tips. Experts tell
us to reduce stress as much as we can. How? Well, as easy as keeping a balance between work, home and play,
and whenever possible, getting support from your family and friends. You had better take time not to relax, but
also to do things. Avoid being in a hurry for everything and plan ahead. Get a good night's sleep (a nap also
helps), and if you have a partner, they say that giving him or her a hug is the best stress reducer in the world. If
all this does not work, try laughter. Most doctors say it is the best medicine and it is free.
Seeing all this, the question shouldn't be 'What can you do to have a healthy lifestyle?' but rather 'do
you have time to have a healthy lifestyle?'.
