POLITICAL SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A major in political science for the B.A. degree requires thirty (30) semester hours of political science course work, including
19 hours of required courses and at least 11 elective POLS hours.

POLS Philosophy Course (A POLS course with a 7 in the third digit of the course number, such
as POLS1170 or 3175.) (PHIL classes do not satisfy this requirement.)
Political Science Methods (POLS2220). This is a 4 credit hour course and counts towards the
requirement to complete two writing-intensive (W) courses.
One of: Senior Seminar (POLS4600), Senior Thesis (POLS4990), North Carolina Student
Legislature (POLS4110) or Model United Nations (POLS4163). All are writing-intensive (W) and
oral communications (O) courses.

GPA in POLS courses must be 2.0 or higher.
POLS major requires demonstration of proficiency in a foreign language at the 1202 level.
Political science majors must take at least 12 hours of POLS courses at UNC Charlotte.
The pre-requisite for POLS2220 is a passing grade in a least one 1000-level POLS course and college algebra (MATH1100)
or the equivalent (a STAT course, or PHIL2105, but not MATH0900 or MATH1102).
The pre-requisite for POLS4600 are passing grades in POLS1110, 1130, 1150, and 2220 and senior status.
The pre-requisite for POLS4990 is POLS2220.
All students must take at least two writing-intensive (W) and one oral-communication (O) class. Students should review
their transcripts carefully to ensure that they meet this requirement.
Students can waive POLS2220 (if they are a double major in one of the following) by taking: COMM3100, CJUS3101,
PSYC2103, or SOCY4155. Those doing so must fill out a “Degree Requirement Waiver“ form & must still complete 30
POLS hours. The grade received in another department’s methods course will not count towards the POLS GPA.
Note: Foreign Language requirements are set by the College & Program of your academic major(s). The College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences requires students to demonstrate proficiency in the foreign language of their choice through 1202 level.
