For the treatment of susceptible early immature, immature and mature liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) in cattle, sheep and goats. An aid in controlling selenium deficiencies. WHAT IS FLUKARE C PLUS SELENIUM? ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ An oral fluke drench for cattle, sheep and goats Contains triclabendazole Controls all three stages of liver fluke Contains selenium Easy flow formulation WHY CHOOSE FLUKARE C PLUS SELENIUM? 1. Contains triclabendazole Triclabendazole is a member of the benzimidazole family of drenches, but unlike the other members it is liver fluke specific. It is by far the most effective fluke molecule on the market, giving better control than any other flukicidal active. 2. Controls all three stages of liver fluke Triclabendazole controls all three developmental stages of the liver fluke, from the 4 week old (early immature) stage through to fully mature adults. Treating early immature and immature liver flukes reduces the damage caused by the fluke to the animal’s liver, which in turn reduces the likelihood of death and minimises overall production losses. 3. Contains selenium Selenium deficiency is common in the higher rainfall areas where the liver fluke is prevalent. Selenium deficiencies can increase the effect a worm burden can have on animals through suppressing their immune systems. Other problems associated with selenium deficiency are ill thrift, infertility, reduced production (milk, wool and meat), scouring and ‘white muscle’ disease. 4. Easy flow formulation Flukare C plus Selenium has been formulated to flow through standard drench guns easily. This allows for quick and easy application even at low temperatures. SEPTEMBER 2009 WHEN TO USE FLUKARE C PLUS SELENIUM 1. Strategic timings The critical timing for treating liver fluke is a curative treatment in autumn (April/May) and a preventative treatment in spring (August/September). If there is a heavy infection, a third treatment is recommended in mid-summer. The autumn and summer treatments should control the damaging early immature and immature stages, as well as adult liver flukes. Flukare C plus Selenium is a good option for autumn and summer fluke drenching due to it’s efficacy against all three stages of liver fluke. 2. In rotation with other fluke drenches Rotation of drench groups can extend the time that you can use each drench group on your property by slowing the onset of drench resistance. There are cases of triclabendazole resistance in Australia, so it is important that the triclabendazole-based drenches are rested by rotating to other drenches. An ideal rotation option is Nitromec Injection which does not contain triclabendazole. Nitromec will control all stages of liver fluke, including 99% of the damaging two week old early immature flukes. 3. Fluke testing Fluke egg counts provide valuable information to optimise drench programmes. They will show if a fluke drench is not required because of low fluke numbers, but will also reveal production limiting fluke infections long before clinical signs such as anaemia or wasting are evident. When testing for liver fluke in cattle, an ELISA test that detects antibodies in blood or milk samples is the preferred method. QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE HOW TO USE FLUKARE C PLUS SELENIUM 1. Administration Flukare C plus Selenium is applied orally using standard drenching equipment. Shake well before use. Dose animals according to the heaviest animal by bodyweight in each group (bulls, cows, steers, calves; ewes, wethers, rams, lambs).Where there is a large variation in size within the group, draft into two or more lines based on bodyweight. A representative sample of animals from each group should be weighed before treatment. Do not underdose. Check accuracy of drenching equipment before and during use. INDICATIONS For the treatment of susceptible early immature, immature and mature liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) in cattle, sheep and goats. An aid in controlling selenium deficiencies. CONTRAINDICATIONS This product should not be used when selenium intake from pasture is high or selenium is provided by other means (such as pasture top dressing, vaccine, pellets or selenium drenches) or if blood selenium levels at treatment are high. PRECAUTIONS Selenium can have toxic effects, particularly in sheep with liver damage that graze in areas where plants that contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids are prevalent.
