SEPTEMBER 16, 2016
MISS JANDACEK’S CLASS
Week of September 12th - September 18th
Our Week in Review
Reading - Room 12 read Schools
Around the World, and used the text to
learn how to locate information. We also
continued to incorporate the Daily 5 into
our reading routine, and the kids
practiced the choices “Reading to Self ”
and “Work on Writing.” On Tuesday, the
class visited the computer lab and read
leveled readers on the website www.razkids.com. You can access the site at
home, too, following the directions on the
raz-kids sheet sent home this week.
Writing - We learned more about main
ideas and topic sentences. The kids
worked on revising and editing their
interview paragraphs from last week.
Phonics & Spelling - We sorted and
found spelling patterns for long vowel
words.
Grammar - The students learned the
difference between subjects and
Room 12’s Schedule:

predicates, and identified the complete
subjects and predicates in sentences.
Math - Room 12 used drawings and
number models to solve multiplication
and division number stories. The kids
made multiplication flash cards to
practice their “2,” “5,” and “10” facts,
and practiced these facts to develop
automaticity. The class also accessed our
math website on the iPads and used a pan
scale e-tool to balance the weight of
different items.
Social Studies - Room 12 learned
more about parts of maps, including the
map key, compass rose, and scale. The
class applied their map reading skills and
analyzed maps of Brookfield Zoo.
Science - The students learned more
about the components of an experiment,
including the terms hypothesis,
conclusion, constant, and variable. We
also discussed how scientists use the
scientific method to answer questions.
