Communication Project Summer 2014 How do you know what I want? What if my face looked like this? (sad) Alex: You are sad and crying. Jahmar: You upset. Kian: My baby gets sad. If I knocked at your door, but didn’t speak when you answered it, what would you say? Jahmar: Hello! Rehim: Good morning. Chelsea: Go upstairs. Kian: Go and have a bath. Alex: Come in. Noah: Come in! Ranbir: Hello! How do you know that I want to come in? Kian: Because people come to your house. Rehim: Because you knocked. I wanted to find out what the children knew about interaction between people and how they could tell what the other person wanted. We acted out a telephone call. Who’s there? How do you know? Noah: Because I look out of the window and see you. I hid from the children and then spoke to them. Can you see me now? Alex: No, you gone! Ranbir: Hiding. We went to our McDonalds role play area. I pointed silently at the menu. What do I want? Alex: Sausage! Chelsea: Rice and chicken! Noah: Burger! How did you know I was there? I didn’t say those things, so how do you know? Chelsea: You was hiding but I hear you. Jahmar: I heard your mouth! Noah: Because that’s where you go. Ranbir: Your hand up. Jahmar: It’s me! Me: Who’s me? Jahmar: Me! Me: Who’s me though? Jahmar: It’s Jahmar! Could I see Jahmar? Rehim: No, you talk on the phone. Alex: You don’t have to use eyes. How did I know it was him then? Kian: You listening to him with your ears! Chelsea: You put the phone up here. Communication Project Summer 2014 Jahmar: My mommy has got a phone and she can see my daddy on there. We then took away our ability to see by wearing a blindfold and someone had to guide us around the space. The children really had to listen and trust their guide! Today we made a telephone using cups and string. The children talked and listened to each other, then one of them hid so we really had to use our ears! Alex: I didn’t see what you left on the floor, it was dark and scary. Ranbir: I listen in the cup, I hear Kian talk but I not see him. Rehim: Feels like tickly and I told Noah, you have to watch out for the things because we might fall over. Noah: You have to know the number to phone somebody and there’s no number on this phone so who are we talking to? Jahmar: I couldn’t see him but he was talking right in his ear. Chelsea: He did a good job, he told me when we got there. Kian: My eyes were black, I couldn’t see the floor, thought I was gonna fall over, I wanted to use my eyes. Do we always use both our eyes and ears? Chelsea: I do, because then I don’t see anything. Kian: I don’t see when I am sleeping. Rehim: You have to use your ears Rachel, or you don’t hear the stories or anything. Alex: I look for things outside. Noah: When I am listening, I hear the birds outside. Jahmar: I look at the TV to see Ben 10. Ranbir: I looking for aeroplanes and hear them up. Angry Communication Project Summer 2014 Ranbir: She very angry. Jahmar: She had a shock, the monster come in the door and then run away. Kian: Her grandma disappeared. Chelsea: She doesn’t like the trampoline. Alex: Monster. Ranbir: She screaming loud. Noah: We need to use our eyes today, I couldn’t hear anything on the computer, but I know the woman was angry. We had to guess the correct answer to the questions by looking closely at the photos. Rehim: He’s smiling, I noticed that. Jahmar: Someone is making him sad and happy. My dad makes me sad and happy. Alex: He’s smiling. Chelsea: He’s bored, he’s got no choice. Jahmar: He’s not got no Ben 10 tops. Rehim: Nobody is giving him any toys. Noah: There’s nothing there. Kian: Someone is fighting his dad and he’s dead. Alex: No boyfriend. Ranbir: He got no friend. Rachel: Do you do that when you’re sad at home? Kian: No, I’m just happy like, when it’s raining outside, you get a rainbow, sometimes I do this, I be happy and sad. Ranbir: A hole. Rachel: I think that person might be bending their head, like this. How do you feel if you bend your head like that? Rehim: Sad, cry, booooo! Ranbir: I go like this (bends his head). They both pretend to cry. Noah: I don’t know who that is. He was kneeling on his knees and on his head, like this (slides underneath the table), he was scared cuz he was hiding to see who’s coming, the monster. Communication Project Summer 2014 Do we know what people’s body language is saying? Kian: Noah, he like (crosses arms and pulls an angry face). Alex: (folds his arms) Kian: Yesterday when I do this (crosses his arms), I do this (pulls a smiling face). Rachel: Yes sometimes if you are doing good listening, you can do that. There’s sometimes that you can do with your legs when you’re angry too. Kian: This! (punches his thighs), Hulk!! (smacks the table). Rachel: Oh is Hulk angry? Kian: Yeah he smashed the table, and he smashed the building. Rachel: I don’t know why Hulk gets so angry. Kian: Cuz he sees naughty mans and naughty robots killing him. Rachel: Oh, that’s what makes him angry? Kian: Sometimes when you shoot him, he don’t get killed, it’s good job. Noah: I was doing this (crosses arms and pulls a serious face) but only if I’m angry I do that. I was a little bit angry but not too much. Rehim: Noah’s cross and he’s crossing his arms! Ranbir: He’s little one. Rachel: When do you cross your arms? Rehim: When you’re angry. Ranbir: Nothing. Rachel: Sometimes I do something with my feet if I am angry. Ranbir: Stamp! Alex: It was him!
