How do you know
what I want?
What if my face looked like
this? (sad)
Alex: You are sad and
crying.
Jahmar: You upset.
Kian: My baby gets sad.
If I knocked at your door, but didn’t speak
when you answered it, what would you
say?
Jahmar: Hello!
Rehim: Good morning.
Chelsea: Go upstairs.
Kian: Go and have a bath.
Alex: Come in.
Noah: Come in!
Ranbir: Hello!
How do you know that I want to come in?
Kian: Because people come to your
house.
Rehim: Because you knocked.
I wanted to find out what the children
knew about interaction between people and
how they could tell what the other person
wanted.
We acted out a telephone call.
Who’s there?
How do you know?
Noah: Because I look out of
the window and see you.
I hid from the children and then
spoke to them. Can you see me
now?
Alex: No, you gone!
Ranbir: Hiding.
We went to our McDonalds
role play area. I pointed
silently at the menu. What
do I want?
Alex: Sausage!
Chelsea: Rice and chicken!
Noah: Burger!
How did you know I was there?
I didn’t say those things, so
how do you know?
Chelsea: You was hiding but I hear
you.
Jahmar: I heard your mouth!
Noah: Because that’s where
you go.
Ranbir: Your hand up.
Jahmar: It’s me!
Me: Who’s me?
Jahmar: Me!
Me: Who’s me though?
Jahmar: It’s Jahmar!
Could I see Jahmar?
Rehim: No, you talk on the phone.
Alex: You don’t have to use eyes.
How did I know it was him then?
Kian: You listening to him with
your ears!
Chelsea: You put the phone up
here.

Summer 2014
Jahmar: My mommy has got a phone
and she can see my daddy on there.
We then took away our ability
to see by wearing a blindfold
and someone had to guide us
around the space. The children
really had to listen and trust
their guide!
Today we made a telephone using
cups and string. The children talked
and listened to each other, then one
of them hid so we really had to use
our ears!
Alex: I didn’t see what you left on the floor, it was dark and
scary.
Ranbir: I listen in the cup, I hear Kian talk but I not see
him.
Rehim: Feels like tickly and I told Noah, you have to watch
out for the things because we might fall over.
Noah: You have to know the number to phone somebody
and there’s no number on this phone so who are we talking
to?
Jahmar: I couldn’t see him but he was talking right in his
ear.
Chelsea: He did a good job, he told me when we got there.
Kian: My eyes were black, I couldn’t see the floor, thought I
was gonna fall over, I wanted to use my eyes.
Do we always use
both our eyes and
ears?
Chelsea: I do, because then I don’t see anything.
Kian: I don’t see when I am sleeping.
Rehim: You have to use your ears Rachel, or you don’t
hear the stories or anything.
Alex: I look for things outside.
Noah: When I am listening, I hear the birds outside.
Jahmar: I look at the TV to see Ben 10.
Ranbir: I looking for aeroplanes and hear them up.
Angry

Summer 2014
Ranbir: She very angry.
Rehim: I think she wants
money or someone to
come in her shop.
Noah: She’s angry
because doing this
(pointing) and she stealed
something and not paid.
Kian: Someone took
something out her bag.
Jahmar: I think someone
might want to shoot her.
Chelsea: She wants food.
Alex: She angry like this.
The children start to laugh
themselves.
Rehim: He looks like he’s
smiling.
Kian: He’s gone in the
shop and paid.
Chelsea: He went to the
shop and brought some
sweets.
Noah: I get happy like that
when I get toys from ToysR-Us.
Alex: He laughing at his
friends.
Ranbir: He like sweets.
Jahmar: I think he’s got
something from the shop
and he’s happy now.
Happy
Today we watched
some video clips of
different emotions.
We watched them
with the sound off,
so the children
needed to watch
carefully.
Can you see how
people feel?
The children suddenly go
very quiet.
Jahmar: He’s crying like
a baby.
Rehim: I think someone
has hurt him.
Alex: He’s hurt himself.
Kian: I think he’s hit his
head on the wall.
Noah: That man is trying
to make him happy.
Chelsea: That man is
loving him up.
Ranbir: He very sad, he
need tissue.
Sad
Jahmar: She’s not hugging, her
friends doesn’t like her.
Ranbir: Not her friends.
Kian: She didn’t got a boyfriend.
Noah: I think she’s sad because
nobody even likes her.
Rehim: She might hit them.
Scared
Noah: She was
screaming because
something jumped up in
her face.
Rehim: She looked like
she saw a monster.
Jahmar: She had a
shock, the monster come
in the door and then run
away.
Kian: Her grandma
disappeared.
Chelsea: She doesn’t
like the trampoline.
Alex: Monster.
Ranbir: She screaming
loud.
Noah: We need to use
our eyes today, I couldn’t
hear anything on the
computer, but I know the
woman was angry.
We had to guess the correct
answer to the questions by
looking closely at the photos.
Rehim: He’s smiling, I
noticed that.
Jahmar: Someone is
making him sad and
happy. My dad makes me
sad and happy.
Alex: He’s smiling.
Chelsea: He’s bored, he’s got no
choice.
Jahmar: He’s not got no Ben 10 tops.
Rehim: Nobody is giving him any toys.
Noah: There’s nothing there.
Kian: Someone is fighting his dad and
he’s dead.
Alex: No boyfriend.
Ranbir: He got no friend.
Rehim: She’s telling her
something exciting.
Jahmar: Her mouth is
open and she go like this,
“oh!”
Noah: Yeah, she’s hugging
here.
Rehim: She’s hgging each
other, like I hug Sophia.
Ranbir: I hug my mommy.
Rehim: She’s scared,
someone scary is scaring her.
Noah: Her hand is up by her
chi, like she’s trying to hide.
Jahmar: Rehim, it might be a
spider!
Alex: She’s going to cry.

Do our bodies show
how we feel?
Summer 2014
Sad
Scared
Jahmar: He looks like an angry troll.
Rehim: She’s moving like she’s
dancing happy.
Kian: I don’t like to be scared, I like
to be scary!
Noah: You are bigger when you are
happy.
Chelsea: I seen his face on the side,
he’s laughing.
Chelsea: His neck has
gone.
Alex: I think he is sad
because he got no toys.
Angry
Today we used the overhead
projector and a screen to see
what our shadows looked
like when we felt different
emotions.
Cross With
Each Other
Telling a
Secret
Best
Friends
Wanting
a Kiss
Fighting
Rehim: I’m like
kickboxing.
Do Not
Want To Be
Friends
Today we
looked back at
the photos to
see if we could
tell how people
felt.
Alex: She was making shadows.
Kian: Dancing.
Rachel: How do you feel when
you are dancing?
Kian: Happy.
Rachel: Do you dance when you
are sad?
Kian: No!
Alex: No!
Rachel: Why not? Haven’t you
got a sad dance you can do?
They both start dancing with sad
faces.
Rehim: Like dancing.
Ranbir: Nod head.
Rehim: Like a dancing girl!
Kian: (stands up and strikes the same pose) I done it.
Rachel: How did you feel when you were doing
that?
Kian: VERY sad.
Rachel: Do you do that when you’re sad at home?
Kian: No, I’m just happy like, when it’s raining outside,
you get a rainbow, sometimes I do this, I be happy and
sad.
Ranbir: A hole.
Rachel: I think that person might be bending their
head, like this. How do you feel if you bend your
head like that?
Rehim: Sad, cry, booooo!
Ranbir: I go like this (bends his head).
They both pretend to cry.
Noah: I don’t know who that is. He was kneeling on his
knees and on his head, like this (slides underneath the
table), he was scared cuz he was hiding to see who’s
coming, the monster.

Summer 2014
Do we know
what people’s
body
language is
saying?
Kian: Noah, he like (crosses arms and pulls an angry face).
Rachel: Do you think his face was like that, because we can’t see his
face, can we? So what do you think Noah’s face looked like?
Alex: Cross!
Kian: Like this (folds arms and pulls a cross face).
Rachel: I cross my arms sometimes, but there’s something else I do
with my hands when I’m angry.
Kian: Like this (puts his hands on his hips).
Alex: (folds his arms)
Kian: Yesterday when I do this (crosses his arms), I do this (pulls a smiling
face).
Rachel: Yes sometimes if you are doing good listening, you can do
that. There’s sometimes that you can do with your legs when you’re
angry too.
Kian: This! (punches his thighs), Hulk!! (smacks the table).
Rachel: Oh is Hulk angry?
Kian: Yeah he smashed the table, and he smashed the building.
Rachel: I don’t know why Hulk gets so angry.
Kian: Cuz he sees naughty mans and naughty robots killing him.
Rachel: Oh, that’s what makes him angry?
Kian: Sometimes when you shoot him, he don’t get killed, it’s good job.
Noah: I was doing this (crosses arms and pulls a serious face) but only if I’m
angry I do that. I was a little bit angry but not too much.
Rehim: Noah’s cross and he’s crossing his arms!
Ranbir: He’s little one.
Rachel: When do you cross your arms?
Rehim: When you’re angry.
Ranbir: Nothing.
Rachel: Sometimes I do something with my feet if I am angry.
Ranbir: Stamp!
Alex: It was him!
Kian: It was me! (strikes the same pose).
Rachel: Why were your hands like that?
Kian: Cuz I was doing (stands up, puts his hands up and screams), I was scared
arrrrggggh!
Rachel: And did you make that noise when you were there?
Kian: Yeah, like this (screams) and looked around, what was that noise?
Rachel: So what was making you scared?
Kian: A frog, no (nudges Alex) you jumped at my face!
Rachel: So where your fingers were like this, your mouth was open too? Is that
what happens when you get scared?
Kian: (opens his mouth, then covers his mouth with his hand)
Rehim: Kian’s shocked! He’s scary, ooooh!
Ranbir: It’s him! (points to Rehim)
They both hold their hands up in the same pose.
Ranbir: He wobble.
Rachel: He might be wobbling, he might be surprised if someone gave him a
surprise, he might be feeling really scared, I don’t know because I can’t see his
face, only his hands.
Ranbir: Monster.
Rehim: Freeze the monster, then he might be like, stay like that forever! He might be
freezed.
Noah: That’s Kian.
Rachel: How do you know that it’s Kian?
Noah: Because his hair is shaved off and I remember he was doing this (spreads his
fingers out). He’s scared (opens his mouth), like this (holds his hands up), this bit has to go
out (the palms of his hands).Cuz you don’t know what’s coming, he was going to grab
him, a ghost.
Kian: We were very angry, I was angry
at Noah.
Rachel: If you get angry with
mommy, do you do that?
Kian: Yep.
Rachel: And does mommy do that?
Kian: Yep, like this (crosses arms and
pulls an angry face).
Alex: I don’t do that.
Kian: When Hulk does this (arrgggh
arrrghhh).
Rehim: We were cross. I crossed my arms
because I was cross with Alex and Alex
was cross with me.
Ranbir: Cross.
Noah: He was angry at him, he was sad
cuz he shouted at him, he’s crossed his
arms but he’s looking backwards and
putting his head down.
They all laugh.
Kian: That’s Noah and Chelsea, kissing
each other!
Alex: No, I think they was hugging.
Rachel: If you hug someone, are they
somebody that you’re angry with?
They shake their heads.
Kian: Mommy! And daddy!
Alex: And nanny!
Kian: I hug my friends too.
Rehim: They might be kissing each other.
Chelsea gonna really kiss him!
Rachel: Did he want a kiss?
Rehim: Yeah, a real kiss! On the lips, real
lips!
Noah: She’s hugging him because that was
her friend.
Alex: I think it was Jahmar.
Rachel: What do you think he is
doing?
Kian: Kissing his neck.
Alex: He’s listening.
Rehim: Whispering one (puts hands up
around mouth). Jahmar was trying to
whisper up to Kian.
Ranbir: Kissing him.
Rehim: Looks like he’s whispering
something in his ear. When Kian comes
to my house, I can whisper to him, let’s
go and play in the back garden and not
tell my mommy.
Noah: Jahmar was telling Kian a
secret, he was saying don’t tell nobody
that I’m going to school in September.
Secret, case nobody can’t hear.
Rachel: What do you think
Rehim was doing here?
Kian: Race (punching out). Race,
race, bosha!
Rachel: So what was Rehim
doing? Did you want to hurt
you?
Alex: No.
Kian: No, he was only ‘tending!
Rehim: I think we were fighting
again. That might be me, and
that might be Alex. My arms are
out, getting ready to fight.
Rachel: Was it a real fight?
Rehim: Yeah.
Kian: That’s you! (points at Alex)
Rachel: How do you know it’s Alex?
Kian: Cuz I do.
Rachel: How do you know though? What can you
see that looks like Alex?
Kian: (points to his hair) Cuz his hair long. I think he was
doing like? (puts hands on either side of his head and
shakes it) Did you do it like this? (Shows Alex)
Alex: No, I think I was putting my arms that way and
then putting that one in my ear.
Rachel: Show me what you mean.
Alex: (rests his head on one hand)
Rachel: Why did you do that?
Alex: Because I wanted to.
Kian: I do it too, look (copies the pose).
Rachel: How do you feel when you do that?
Alex: (After a long think) Happy.
Rachel: Sometimes when we’re happy, we smile,
were you smiling behind the curtain?
Alex: Erm, I think so.
Ranbir: He is this size.
Rachel: What is Alex doing with his arms?
Rehim: Putting his guard up. He might wanna fight me
(punches out).
The children
chose their
favourite
picture.
Kian chose the picture of Jahmar and Chelsea hugging each other.
Noah and Chelsea kissing on each other.
Alex chose the picture of himself with his arms up.
I’m doing a funny face.
Rehim chose the picture of Jahmar and Kian whispering.
Cuz he’s whispering. I like people to whisper to me because they give me plans to trick
people.
Ranbir chose the picture of Alex and Rehim standing apart being cross with
each other.
I like it, Alex and Rehim fighting.
Noah chose the picture of Chelsea and Jahmar hugging.
Cuz he’s hugging him, I like to see the pictures.
