Wilmot and Waubay-Summit split games on the week and look to finish the regular season strong with only a few games remaining. Waverly-South Shore 66, Northwestern 50 The Waverly-South Shore boys basketball team trumped Northwestern 66-50 Saturday, February 13, in Waverly. The Coyotes led by nine points at the end of the first quarter and earned a 31-17 advantage at halftime. Northwestern outscored Waverly-South Shore 24-18 in the third quarter, but the Coyotes scored eight more points than Northwestern in the final period to secure the 66-50 final. Jacob Boettcher was at the forefront of the Coyotes’ efforts with 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Tony Gross contributed 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Carson Britzman, 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. The Coyotes outscored Rosholt by five points in the first quarter and nine points in the second quarter for a 25-11 lead at halftime. WaverlySouth Shore maintained its lead in the third quarter for a 35-20 advantage and scored three more points than Rosholt in the fourth quarter for the 44-28 final. Bailey Comes led the Coyotes with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and four steals. Tony Gross contributed eight points, four rebounds and three steals, and Ferdinand Ramos, seven points. The Wolves trailed by five points after the first quarter and narrowed the gap in the second quarter for a 17-14 score at the half. Wilmot outscored Northwestern 14-10 in the third quarter to take the lead, but a 21-point run by Northwestern in the fourth quarter sealed the 48-39 loss. Dylan Jurgens led the Wolves with 16 points. Wilmot 41, Florence-Henry 57 The Wilmot boys basketball team was defeated by Eastern Coteau Conference rival Florence-Henry 5741 Friday, February 12, in Florence. The Wolves trailed by five points after the first quarter and despite outscoring Florence-Henry in the second quarter still trailed 28-25 at halftime. The Wolves were outmatched 17-8 in the third quarter Lady Bulldogs Girls Basketball Junior Varsity, C Team, Seventh and Eighth Grade JUNIOR VARSITY The Milbank Area junior varsity girls basketball team was defeated by Madison 51-40 Monday, February 15, in Milbank. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by five points after the first quarter, but narrowed Madison’s lead to 18-15 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs were outscored 21-7 in the third quarter and despite an 18-point surge in the final period could not overtake Madison. Shea Hooth led the Lady Bulldogs with eight points, one rebound and one steal. The Lady Bulldogs held a four-point advantage after the first quarter and increased their lead to 18-10 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs were outscored by two points in the third quarter, but a 17-7 run in the fourth quarter secured the 41-25 final. Finley was at the forefront of the Lady Bulldogs’ efforts with 15 points, four rebounds and three steals. C TEAM The Milbank Area girls basketball C team turned back Madison 48-37 Monday, February 15, in Milbank. The Lady Bulldogs led 12-4 after the first quarter and both teams scored nine points in the second quarter for a 21-15 Milbank Area advantage at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Madison 15-7 in the third quarter and despite being outscored in the fourth quarter held on to earn the 48-37 victory. Chloe Bender led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points. Kylie Kasuske added 10 points; Gabbie Cummins, seven; Jaden Hoeke and Makayla Johnson, four each; Katie Wollschlager, three, and Taylor Thue, Kellie Christians and Anna Mathews, two each. The Milbank Area girls basketball C team walloped Webster Area 40-27 Thursday, February 11, in Milbank. The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a six-point advantage after the first quarter and more than doubled their lead in the second quarter for a 24-10 score at halftime. Milbank Area outscored Webster Area 9-7 in the third quarter and held on to its advantage in the fourth quarter for the 40-27 final. Cummins spearheaded the Lady Bulldogs’ efforts with 13 points. The Wolves trailed by one point at the end of the first quarter and Britton-Hecla increased its lead to four in the second quarter for a 31-27 score at halftime. Wilmot was outscored 24-7 in the third quarter and despite a 17-point rally in the fourth quarter the Wolves fell 71-51. Dylan Jurgens led the Wolves with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Mustangs were then outscored 19-4 in the third quarter and despite rallying 17 points in the fourth quarter fell 66-36. Travis Purdy led the Mustangs with nine points. Waubay-Summit 45, Great Plains Lutheran 43 The Waubay-Summit boys basketball team snuck past Eastern Coteau Conference rival Great Plains Lutheran (GPL) 45-43 Tuesday, February 9, in Watertown. The Mustangs trailed 13-6 after the first quarter and were outscored 17-10 in the second quarter for a 3016 deficit at halftime. Despite only scoring two points in the third quarter, GPL maintained its lead 32-22 heading into the final period, where the Mustangs rallied 23 points to overtake GPL and secure the 45-43 final. Andy Amdahl was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 14 points. Jordan Vermillion added 10 points, and Nathan Benike, nine points and five rebounds. THE MILBANK fifth grade boys basketball team won all four of its games in the eight-team Benson tournament Saturday, February 12, in Benson, MN. Milbank defeated Benson, BBE and Montevideo in pool play before defeating KMS in the championship. The Bulldogs led by 13 points after the first quarter and increased their advantage in the second quarter for a 37-19 lead at halftime. Milbank Area outscored Webster Area 17-11 in the third quarter and both teams scored six points in the final period, giving the Bulldogs the 60-36 final. James Weber led the Bulldogs with 17 points, two rebounds and one steal. Milbank Area scored five more points than Webster Area in the third quarter and both teams scored two points in the fourth quarter, giving Milbank Area the contest 45-29. The Lady Bulldogs will finish out their season with contests against Ortonville, MN, and Deuel before heading to the region tournament in Britton. Milbank Area 41, Madison 50 The Milbank Area girls basketball team fell to Madison 50-41 Monday, February 15, in Milbank. “We didn’t get the start that we wanted,” said Joe Frederiksen, coach. “We also had a hard time getting our shots to fall in the first half.” The Lady Bulldogs faced a 14-6 deficit at the end of the first quarter and were held to four points in the second quarter for a 25-10 disadvantage at halftime. Milbank Area was outscored by six points in the third quarter and despite outscoring Madison 21-9 in the fourth quarter could not overcome the deficit. Molly Rick led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points and four rebounds. Mikayla Street added seven points and one rebound, and Caryssa Mielitz, five points, 13 rebounds and two steals. Karlee Mertens scored five points; Shelby Hooth, four points and three rebounds; LaChasity Finley, three points and two steals; Sophia Seffrood and Shea Hooth, two points each, and Cara Berkner and Mikaela Hoeke, one rebound each. Milbank Area hit 14 of 36 field goal attempts, shooting 39 percent, and Madison hit 40 percent of its field goals (16 of 40). The Lady Bulldogs grabbed six more boards than Madison, 28-22, but had five more turnovers, 16-11. Milbank Area 45, Webster Area 69 The Milbank Area girls basketball team was defeated by Northeast Conference rival Webster Area 6945 Thursday, February 11, in Webster. “We came out and played a good first half,” said Joe Frederiksen, coach. “Then we came out in the third quarter and weren’t as ready to play and we lost all momentum.” The Lady Bulldogs trailed 17-15 at the end of the first quarter and were outscored in the second quarter for a 36-26 disadvantage at halftime. Webster Area stole the show in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 20-2 for a 56-28 advantage. Milbank Area made a 17-point run in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overtake the Bearcats. Mielitz spearheaded the Lady Bulldog effort with 17 points and six rebounds. Hoeke added seven points and one rebound, and Rick, six points and four rebounds. Seffrood had six points, one rebound and one steal; Street, four points, four rebounds and one assist; Berkner, three points, three rebounds and one assist; Mertens, two points and two rebounds; Shelby Hooth, one assist and one steal; Shea Hooth, one rebound and one steal, and Finley, one steal. The Lady Bulldogs were 17 of 43 from field goal range, shooting 40 percent. Webster Area completed 54 percent of its field goals (27 of 50). Milbank Area was outrebounded 28-27 and committed six more turnovers than Webster Area, 14-8.
