The Art of Science: Observing Life in Extremes

The Art of Science:
Observing Life in Extremes
“I wish the viewer to become engaged by the features that engage me and that are
important to the story the animal or environment has to tell,” Karen Jacobson
Presented by Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover (Scientist) and Karen Jacobson (Artist)
March 27, 2010 (8:30 am – 2:00 pm)
Penn State EMS Museum in the Deike Building
Teachers will get a unique opportunity to meet Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover, a deep-sea explorer and the only
woman qualified to pilot the deep-diving submersible Alvin and scientific illustrator Karen Jacobsen, who
accompanied Dr. Van Dover on many expeditions to deep-sea locations across the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans. During the twenty years that she has worked in the deep sea, Cindy has made many discoveries of
species and adaptations to life in extreme environments. Karen, a biological illustrator, has sailed on nine
different science expeditions. Her eye for detail allows her to see features that scientists often overlook.
Join us in a unique opportunity to learn from a world class scientist and the preeminent deep-sea wilderness
artist in the world. Surrounded by the Beyond the Edge of the Sea Exhibit, teachers will see how art and
science are a perfect partnership. Scientific illustration will be highlighted.
Workshop components:
• An understanding of organisms in extreme environments and the field of astrobiology
• Experience how art can enhance observation
• Understanding about the diversity of life in the deep-ocean wilderness
• Complete activities from the educational curriculum developed specifically for the exhibit,
which can be utilized prior to a classroom field trip to the museum
• Teachers will be provided materials to utilize in the classroom
Excellent workshop for art teachers too!
This workshop is FREE to all educators with Act 48 credit available
All Saturday Science Workshops are aligned to the PA elementary and middle school science, technology
and environmental science standards. A continental breakfast and lunch are provided by the Center for
Science and the Schools (CSATS). Maximum enrollment is 24, so register on-line now to reserve a spot.
