Happy Summer!!! Your Village Association has been hard at work this summer with
the Paul White Memorial Road Race which took place on July 11 th and the upcoming
Ice Cream Social on August 28th! Hope to see you all there!
Thank you to all the great volunteers who helped make the 2015 Paul White Memorial Road Race another huge success! We had an excellent day for running and over
300 runners signed up to participate. Please see the results in this Newsletter.
Thank you again to Scott Muma and his team of volunteers. We even enjoyed the
sounds of music on the corner of Chester Street and Quaker Road cheering on the
runners as they neared the finish line! Then we had neighbors out in force offering
water along the course and spraying down the hot runners. At the finish line we
greeted the runners with more water and watermelon which was donated by Royal
Megansett Nursing Home. Altogether a great Village Effort!

Congratulations to Marge Freeman on her 100 th Birthday! The Village Association
arranged to take her for a celebratory spin in the classic Thunderbird owned by Dan
Small. They drove the race course after the start of the race, to the delight of all
the onlookers and Marge was thrilled with her Birthday Gift Ride!

TWO BOYS AND A HOME MADE CRANE!
We have all read stories of “boy entrepreneurs” who were, for their young age, very industrious, serious minded
and hard working. Intelligent young men like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, who became “captains
of industry”, were truly self made men . Although they never went to college, their keen sense of observation,
independence and strong wills, led them to become extremely successful.
In the late 1940’s two local North Falmouth boys, who were both enterprising and mechanically inclined, started
spending time at our fire station (Station #3, which is now our Village Junction). They were John Farren and
Edward Roskovics. John lived right next door at 201 Old Main Rd. and Edward lived almost at the corner at 13
Wild Harbour Rd. The two showed a great deal of interest in the call company so were selected junior callmen.
Only regular callmen helped fight fires and were paid for their work. If and when two of the regular callmen
moved away or were injured on the job, these two ”juniors” would be upgraded to regular callmen. That’s how
the system worked.
Most of the dozen or so Station 3 callmen and most of North Falmouth as well, did not realize that the Farren
and Roskovics boys had their own “junior construction and excavation company”. For “equipment” they had 2
“heavy duty carts of the Radio Flyer variety but not pretty and a lot stronger and more rugged. These were
carts constructed of wood with dual rear wheels and a long wooden t-handle. Of course the carts were boy
powered with someone up front a few behind pushing. There were always local boy volunteers around to help
out. Even though I was a lot younger then Ed and John, I volunteered to help out one afternoon. My “Job” was
to help push a cart load of gravel down Pine Street, almost to the end. I was about done in only half way down
the street and was sent home! But it was fun being part of something at that age.
The absolute “pride” of the Farren and Roskovics Construction Company was a completely home-made “Crane”!
It was a large wooden box on wheels with either a 3” by 4” or 4” by 4” timber “boom” attached to a fairly large
iron hinge mounted on the bottom front of the crane itself. There were open windows in the front and sides
of the crane with a boy-sized doorway on one side. A series of ropes connected a few levers inside the cab to
the boom and to a house hold bucket suspended from the boom itself. The cab of the crane was all wood,
about 5ft tall, 3ft wide and about 4ft long. (I still have a photo of it somewhere.) It actually looked more
like a rabbit hutch or an “out house” on wheels! Thinking back now, I’ll bet young Farren and Roskovics were
inspired by the James Rand Construction Company which had been a major factor in the development of North
Falmouth in the 1920’s and 30’s. THEY had a man sized crane! with all of this “equipment” the Farren and Roskovics team went looking for small excavation jobs. At the (old) fire station they learned that the Falmouth Fire
Department was
Looking for land in the center of North Falmouth on which to build a new fire station. There was a nice corner
lot available just down the road at the corner of Old Main and Wild Harbour Rds. which the Farren family
owned. It wasn't a very large lot for possible future expansion but it would suffice for the need back the (late
40’w and 50’s) Arrangements were made to purchase the land, design the building and file the necessary permits with the town.
Almost unbelievably an excavation permit was issued to the Farren and Roskovics Construction Co. for digging

I am also quite sure that the excavation job was completed on time and on budget. I am not sure exactly who built the new Station 3 building itself. It could have been either Mr. Overy’s company or
Manuel 1t. Medeiros and Co. also of North Falmouth. I remember attending an Open House at the new
fire station in 1952 with my Dad who was a call company member. Mr. Lucien Mead, call company secretary for about 50 yrs., proudly showed us around.
In their later years , both John and Edward operated successful but separate trucking companies.
