Serendipity
Being Happy by Doing it ALL … most of the time
By any standards, Margaret is a very busy woman who has
become skilled at juggling her many roles: entrepreneurial
business owner; accomplished classical lyric soprano; wife for
34 years; and, mother of four active and involved children.
And if all this weren’t enough, she also has held various
leadership roles in church, school, community organizations
. . . oh, and the Town and County, too!
How does one combine a busy personal life with a rewarding
career and the fulfilling pursuit of one’s passion? How can
one do it all, without giving something up? “Making it all
work makes me happy,” says Margaret, “and sometimes ‘serendipity’ has played a
role.”
Business Connections is sponsored by the Membership Development Committee.
Members are encouraged to bring a guest. Ample time is allowed for informal
networking among members and guests. Be sure to bring your business cards.
Make your reservations at 860-522-1100 or [email protected]
Notice to T&C members: Please consider sharing your own experience and
wisdom with your fellow members by being a presenter at an upcoming Business
Connections networking event. For more details contact T&C member Sue Barnes
at 860-298-1810 or Jeane Best, chair of the Membership Development Committee.

Thursday, March 26
5:45pm Social Time | 6:30pm Dinner

CLASSIC FILM GROUP
In late spring of that year, when four artists had award
recommendations abruptly vetoed by the chairman of
the National Endowment for the Arts, Wilkins invited
each of the four performers to come to Hartford. It was
the first in a series of events that Real Art Ways
presented in the context of the culture wars, and a
foreshadowing of Wilkins’ demonstrated commitment to
supporting artists and taking risks to present meaningful
programming. Today, Real Art Ways is widely regarded
as one of the country’s outstanding contemporary art
spaces, one that has a special link with its own
community. With films, concerts, performances,
readings, exhibitions, and a space where people gather
before and after events, Real Art Ways is a unique
meeting place for people to come together around art,
ideas, and conversation.
T&C SEMINAR
An Invitation to Mindfulness
with Sharon Gutterman
Wednesday, March 11 | Cocktails 5:30pm
Seminar Begins at 6:00pm
Join us for dinner afterwards
Are you stressed, confused, consumed with regrets of the past or worries
about the future? Are family, health or career issues literally causing you pain? Or would you just
like to learn how to live in the present? Please join us on March 11 at 6:00pm to listen and learn
from Sharon Gutterman, PhD, what mindfulness is and how we can all learn to live mindfully.
Sharon has a Ph.D. in medical education and master’s degrees in counseling and adult educational
program development. Like many of us, she was stuck in a whirlpool of anxiety, depression and
insomnia. Although she taught stress reduction and wellbeing, she did not always practice what she
preached. As she started implementing the precepts of mindfulness, she began feeling better and
was able to live more in the moment, letting go of those regrets and worries that take so much
color out of our lives. Join us as Sharon introduces us to what mindfulness is, what it can do for us
and how we can integrate mindfulness into our daily lives. Chair: Susie Hays

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FEBRUARY BOG MEETING





We welcome a returning member, Nancy Grover, and three new members: Barbara Bartucca, Vince Valvo,
and Denise Wilbur.
Exciting plans are underway for the Club's 90th anniversary; there will be a "top-to-bottom" event with
many activities. Stay tuned!
McKenzie Davis, a University of Hartford student, is manning the phones in the late afternoon so that
dinner reservations can be accepted after hours. She will also help with clerical work.
We have an opportunity to vote for our Club in the CTNow Reader's Poll annual competition.
We are happy to announce that the auction in June will be chaired by Susan Brown, Sarah Riley, and Carol
Fortier.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We need members to join our Archives Group. If you are interested in
the history of the Club, join us in our “special” room on the third floor
where we work once a month. The room is filled with the history of the
Club and so much more. If you are interested contact Susan Barney at

Friday, April 24 | The U.S. Coast
Guard Academy in New London
Departure at 9:45am
Lunch in the Officers’ Club | Cost: $60 per person
guests limited to one per member | max of 25 guests
Cancellation Date: April 1
Upon arriving at the Coast Guard Academy, we will start
our visit with a bountiful buffet lunch at the Officers Club.
The luncheon choices include clam chowder, baked ziti with marinara sauce, Swedish meatballs,
an assortment of salads, cold cuts, and cookies and brownies.
Following lunch, we will hear a presentation on the history of the Academy and the expanded
mission of the Coast Guard. The smallest and most specialized of the five federal military
academies, the Academy had its roots in 1790 when Alexander Hamilton proposed the formation of
the Revenue Marine, a seagoing military service that would enforce customs and navigation laws,
collect tariffs, and hail inbound ships. The Coast Guard Academy was a shipboard operation until
1890, when the first land-based campus was established in Maryland. In 1910 the Academy moved
to New London. The Academy’s current enrollment is more than 800 cadets and two-thirds of the
cadets typically graduate in technical majors. Surprisingly, 35% of the cadets are now women.

Harriet and Isabella by Patricia O’Brien
It is 1887, and Henry Ward Beecher lies dying. Reporters from around the world, eager
for one last story about the most lurid scandal of their time, descend on Brooklyn
Heights, their presence signaling the beginning of the voracious appetite for fallen
celebrities we know so well today. When Henry Ward Beecher was put on trial for
adultery in 1875, the question of his guilt or innocence was ferociously debated. His trial
not only split the country, it split apart his family, causing a particularly bitter rift between his sisters,
Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and Isabella Beecher Hooker, an ardent suffragist.
Harriet remained loyal to Henry, while Isabella called publicly for him to admit his guilt. What had been a
loving, close relationship between two sisters plummeted into bitter blame and hurt.

READERS FEAST

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding
hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys
from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers,
and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East
Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler.
Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an
unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young
man’s personal quest. Facilitator: Sarah Riley

The First Muslim: The Story of Muhammad by Lesley Hazelton
Lesley Hazleton’s The First Muslim is the story of Muhammad, the founder
of Islam and prophet to its 1.6 billion followers. Hazelton traces the rise of
Muhammad from a powerless orphan to the leader of one of the world’s
great religions. We gain insights into the life of Muhammad through the
lenses of history, politics, and religion. A former psychologist and reporter on the Middle
East, Hazelton brings meticulous research and readability to a complex subject. She draws
on contemporary analogies to help the reader understand the context of Muhammad’s
world. The First Muslim is an enlightening work for anyone interested in exploring the
legacy of one of history’s most important lives. Discussion Leader: Raquel Thomison

The Devil’s Cave by Martin Walker
Mystery, food and wine in the French province of Dordogne - the latest offering from
Martin Walker, featuring Benoit “Bruno” Courreges.
It's spring in St. Denis. The village choir is preparing for its Easter concert, the wildflowers
are blooming, and among the lazy whorls of the river a dead woman is found floating in a
boat. This means another case for Bruno, the town’s cherished chief of police. With the discovery of
sinister markings and black candles near the body, it seems to Bruno that the occult might be involved.
And as questions mount - Bruno and his colleagues are drawn ever closer to a climactic showdown in the
Gouffre de Colombac: the place locals call the Devil’s Cave.
