Abouttheworkshop
Ourunderstandingofgroupfunctioningisenhancedbyaccessingandactinguponouraestheticandintuitive
sensesastheyariseatthetime,inthegroup.
RhondaandGeorgepresumethatfacilitatingandworkingwithgroupscannotbereducedtoasetofprescriptive
principles,replicatedbyfacilitatorsandparticipants.
Instead,wewillbesupportinggroupmemberstobefaithfultotheirsensoryawarenessandintuitions–whatis
happeninghereandnowinthegroupandforyoupersonally.Wewillattendtopersonal,interpersonalandgroup
dynamicissuesandmonitorchangesinthought,feelingandbehaviour.UnderpinningthisistheworkofCarl
Rogerswhoaskedustobeamirrortoourclientswhilebeingintuitivelypresenttoourselves.
Asamemberofthisgroupyouwillexperienceleadershipthatisminimallydirective,alongthelinesofIrvin
Yalom’sHumanist-Existentialapproach.
Workshopparticipantswillbeencouragedtoberespectful,empathic,concreteandimmediateintheir
expressions.Astheworkshopproceeds,afocusontheexperienceofindividualmemberswillbebalancedwith
reflectionsongroupprocessesandthegroupdynamicsthatemerge.
“GroupWork”providesparticipantswithanopportunitytoattendtopersonal,interpersonalandgroupdynamic
issuesandtomonitorchangesinthought,feelingandbehaviour.Theprocesseswillinformparticipantsofthe
experienceofgroupleadershipandfacilitation.Personalmaterialisalwaysinvolved.
Wewillbeassistingparticipantsto:observewhatisgoingoninothers;switchattentiontotheirowninternal
processesandfindhelpfulwaystoexpressone’sself.Asthegroupprogressesweexpectasharpeningof
awarenessofone’sinternalreferentsandthegroupdynamicsthatmayemerge.

DrGeorgeWillshasover40years’experienceinpersonaldevelopmentgroup
participationandleadership.HewastheoriginatorthenCo-Directorofthe
Bachelor,MasterandDoctoralprogramsinCounsellingPsychologyatLaTrobe
University,retiringfromtherein2006.InthattimehetaughtGroupLeadership
alongthelinesofIrvinYalom,andGerardEganandEmotion-FocussedTherapy
developedbyRobertElliottandLesGreenberg.Hehastakencourseswitheachof
thesepeopleandsponsoredvisitstoAustraliabyRobertElliott.Eachoftheseapproaches
togroupfacilitationhavebeenstronglyinfluencedbytheworkofCarlRogers.
Georgewas,andremains,struckbythepowerfuleffectofbeingwithsomeonewhoisanaccuratemirror
andheendeavourstobethatway,himself,whenthecircumstancescallforit.
George’sworkisalsostronglyinfluencedbyZenBuddhism.HehasbeenapractitionerofZensince1974
whenfirstexposedtoitattheSanFranciscoZenCentre,originatedbyD.T.Suzuki.Since1975,hisprinciple
teacherhasbeenGeoffDawsonofTheOrdinaryMindZenSchool,basedinSydney.
Inageneralsense,George’sorientationisbestdescribedashumanist-existential,whichmeansthatpeople
arecondemnedtothefreedomtobethemselvesandtomanageinspiteofneverfullyknowing.George
encouragespeopletolearntobetruetotheirownwaysofbeingasaviablealternative.
RhondaTranksisaCPFandanIAFAssessor.ShehasrunworkshopsatIAFconferences
inSouthAfrica,Taiwan,Australia,Korea,NewZealand,Switzerland,Malaysia,India,and
Singapore.Inadditionshehastrainedhundredsoffacilitatorsthroughherformaltraining
programsandmentoredfacilitatorsacross9countries.RhondasatontheIAFGlobal
Boardfornearly3yearsindifferentroles.ShehasalsobeentheChairoftheVictoria
Chapter.RhondawasrecentlygrantedtheIAF’sHallofFameAward.
Herbusiness,IllumaConsultingactsasacatalystforexploringandattainingpositivechangeinorganisations
throughfacilitation,coaching,traininganddevelopmentandstakeholderengagement.Rhondaworkswith
individualsandgroupsfromawiderangeofrolesandsectors.Herexpertiseliesindevelopinganddrawing
outthewisdomwithin-encouragingpeopletoshiftperspectives,approachproblemswithfreshinsights,
makeappropriatedecisionsandimplementthemsotheysuccessfullyachievetheoutcomestheywant.

takenheronajourneyofdevelopmentandreflection
onthecomplexitiesandchallengesinvolvedinthis
role.Shehasanon-goinginterestintheemotional
underbellyingroupsandhowthisimpacts
participationandrobustoutcomes.Inrecentyearsshe
