Instructions for ordering Low Vision Aids
This catalogue lists the items that can be ordered for people using the Welsh Low
Vision Service. Most devices can be ordered for an individual by putting the details
of the device in the appropriate table on a low vision record card which is then
faxed to Carmarthenshire LHB ( fax : 01554 744411 )
Practitioners should always be mindful that there is not an infinite budget.
Restricted items There are a very small number of restricted items which are highlighted with
shading.

Permission to order these restricted items should be requested by faxing the
record card and a short letter explaining why the person needs the device to
Carmarthenshire LHB.
Lamps When possible Social Services should provide lamps for people using the scheme
or the person should purchase a lamp themselves. If Social Services are not able
to provide a lamp and the person cannot afford to buy one ( i.e. If they get a
voucher towards the cost of spectacles ) then they can be issued one on the
scheme.
LVA’s not in the catalogue It may be possible to order an LVA that is not in the catalogue. To do this you
should fax the record card and a short letter explaining why the person needs the
aid to Carmarthenshire LHB. If this request is approved then we will endeavour to
source it for you. Please note that this may be a lengthy process and patients
should be warned that this could take up to six weeks.
Not sure what will work Occasionally you may need advice on what might be the most suitable aid for your
patient or you may first want to borrow an LVA for a person to try. In these
instances, please contact Barbara Ryan at Cardiff University who can advise you
and / or make the necessary arrangements for you to borrow the devices to try.

CHANGE SINCE LAST PUBLICATION
Please note that since the last publication of the Welsh Low Vision Aid catalogue
there have been a few minor discontinuations and also some new lines introduced.
These can all be found in the catalogue.
Discontinued lines 1637/3 & 1637/4 - The Eschenbach clip on monocular near 1637/3 & 1637/4 have
been discontinued. If a patient requires a clip on near monocular for near work then
the most suitable alternative is the Specwell FLIPCLAMP and to attach a short
focus monocular. The flipclamp will fit into the 2.75x, 4x and 6x monocular.
The close working distance for each monocular is listed in the catalogue. ( Please
note that although the 6x monocular fits into the flipclamp, the unit is quite heavy
when complete ).
Two flipclamps have already been provided to each practitioner as additional items
for the Low Vision kits.
New lines MAXDETAIL– 16245 Eschenbach have introduced a MAXDETAIL pair of near
vision spectacles similar to the MAX TV’s.
They are for near work and are approximately 2x magnification with a focusing range
of 400mm.
AUTOTOUCH rechargeable - Coil have re-launched the AUTOTOUCH
rechargeable pocket led range with an improved battery life and durability.
( 8146, 8147, 8148, 8270 & 8271 )
HEADLIGHT - There is also a 3 LED headlight due to requests from some
practitioners.
Please note that practitioners who received the early kits at the start of the scheme
will have a 1599303 Eschenbach tungsten bulb mains handle. Later kits now have a
mains led version 15996003. Although the 1599303 is still available the LED version
is much more popular..
