10 November 2016
From the Principal
Saturday 5 November we held our major fundraising event
for the Parents’ and Citizens’ Association of the school – the
annual swap meet. It was a beautiful sunny day and the
community of the Fraser Coast came out in numbers and
supported the school. All car spaces for the meet were
pre-sold, the gold coin entrance fee and the selling of food and
drinks raised approximately $13000 for the P&C. This was a
magnificent effort. Can I thank all our parent volunteers and
the many students and staff who assisted with the organisation
prior to the event, setting up on Friday night and early Saturday
morning and to those who assisted on the gates and on all
the school stalls. Many hands made light work and I thank
everyone for their part in this fundraising venture that benefits
our students. I would like to single out P&C members Kylie
Atkinson and Renei Lewis for all their work in organising this
annual fundraising event. Congratulations on your success!
Another recent success was our annual Awards Evening when
we celebrated the academic, cultural and sporting success of
some 221 students who were recognised and rewarded for
their work both in and outside the classroom. It was a great
evening and it is always the pinnacle of my year as Principal
to congratulate the many proud students and their families on
their success. It is also a time where we say thank you to our
outgoing School Captains, Jemima Andersen, Lauren Fulton,
Josh Lewis and Tobias Baek. These four students represented
the school throughout the past year with pride and purpose. I
would like to publicly acknowledge their work and promotion of
this school and wish them all the best in their future pursuits.
It was with pleasure that the 2017 school captains were
announced on the evening. I would like to welcome Courtney
Cooper, Shaquille Dower, Madison Keig and Courtney

McKenna to the role of school captain and congratulate them
on winning this position. I look forward to working with them in
their role as advocate for the student body.
Many academic awards, credits, distinctions, honours and
subject prizes were awarded to hard working and deserving
students from Year 7 to Year 12. Congratulations to our Junior
Dux, Stephanie Roots, and School Dux, Cameron Huber, for
receiving the highest academic award. While many different
students were recipients of major awards for academic, cultural
and sporting success, the prestigious Caltex All Rounder award
was presented to Jemima Andersen acknowledging her
leadership as School Captain, academic success as a subject
prize winner and recipient of a distinction academic award,
her work in the school music program, school bands, sporting
involvement and member of the Kokoda Challenge team.
Jemima is a very deserving winner of this award.
I would like to thank the many parents/carers and families who
attended the evening to support and acknowledge the great
work of students attending this school. We had in excess of
850 in the audience and this support continues to get bigger
and bigger each year. We may need to think about changing
venue to ensure that everyone can be included in this
celebratory evening of student success. Thank you for your
ongoing support.
Finally, it is now a matter of days before our Year 12 students
leave us and go forth to continue with their life’s adventure. I
would like to wish each and every one the very best of success
for their future. Leaving secondary school is a milestone for
every young person as they become an adult. It is a time when
they leave friends, teachers, their peers and, for some, their
families as they move to other places to continue studying
or enter employment. Be safe and have much happiness in
your life. Remember fondly your time at Hervey Bay State High
School and in the words of Winnie the Pooh – “How lucky I am
to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Awards Evening Success
Thank you to the more than 850 people who were in
attendance for this year’s Awards Evening. As always, the
evening is a great example of the amazing talent and ability that
is possessed by students at Hervey Bay State High School.
This year 221 individual students received academic, cultural
or sporting awards. Not many schools can boast this level of
success across that proportion of the school population. Well
done to all students and in particular those who took home one
of the special awards presented on the evening. I hope to see
you all back on the stage in 2017.

School Captains 2017
Congratulations to Courtney Cooper, Shaquille Dower,
Madison Keig and Courtney McKenna on being appointed to
the position of School Captain for 2017. These four students
will continue the tradition of representing Hervey Bay State High
School with pride over the coming 12 months. The first official
duties for our new captains will be Remembrance Day on Friday
and then a trip to the National Young Leaders Day in Brisbane
on Monday 14 November. I would like to take this opportunity
to once again publicly thank our outgoing School Captains
Jemima, Tobias, Lauren and Josh for the fantastic year and
their great work as ambassadors for our school.
Year 12 Graduation
All Year 12 students have received their invitation to the
Graduation to take place at 9:30 am on Thursday 17
November. Parents and family members are also invited to
attend, however there is at this stage a ‘cap’ of four (4) family
members per student. Those Year 12 students with younger
siblings at school will need to factor their siblings in to their
four tickets if they wish for them to attend. If extra seats are
available, these will be distributed to students on order of ticket
request. Unfortunately we do have a limited space for this event
and as such those without tickets will be unable to attend.

Thank you to Mr McDougall for his organisation of the final
week of activities for our 2016 Graduates. Students have been
provided with a booklet outlining the last week activities and
it contains plenty of information all the way down to ‘dining
etiquette’ at the formal! This year will be bigger and better
than ever before with a trip to Fraser Island being one of the
highlights. As always, I remind all Year 12 students that the
week is a celebration of finishing their time with us at Hervey
Bay State High School and that expectations regarding
behaviour remains very high.

Movie Night Success
Inferno fun! The Year 11 Business Class of Hervey Bay State
High School created and organised the premiere movie night,
Inferno, as a part of the class’s Event Management unit. Lots of
time and effort was put into organising the event by Mrs Wilson
and her students, with the event being a great success. $420
was raised for Mental Health Organisation, Headspace. These
funds were presented to Headspace during Year 11 assembly
on Friday 28 October. Headspace was chosen as it is a great
organisation which contributes to the community through its
services. As the event was held in Mental Health Awareness
Week, it helped raise awareness among the community.
Alongside the event, raffle tickets were sold with two prizes
(Pop! Vinyls) to be won. A big congratulations to Caleb Neilson,
Year 9, and Jace Heilig, Year 11, whose names were drawn
Cost is $65 for an individual or $55 per person in a group of
10. If you would like to come, tickets are available from the city
council. For more information, telephone 0417 952 267.

increase our prices. Do you have a spare

month? We are always in need of extra
hands to help feed the 1000+ students and staff and reduce
their waiting time. If you could lend a hand, please contact Kylie
