Metal detection system for inspection of noodles, spaghetti

„Higher level“ IFS certification confirmed
To always meet the quality
expectations of the customers – that is the objective
of the Buck GmbH & Co. KG.
The noodle manufacturer
therefore exclusively processes selected raw materials and continuously
monitors the complete
production process. For the
inspection of its spaghetti
and macaroni products
Buck uses metal detection
systems of S+S Separation
and Sorting Technology
GmbH.
Buck GmbH & Co. KG, a family
business based in the Upper
Swabian town of Mengen near
Lake Constance, is a producer
of noodle specialties. 130 employees produce and roll out a
quantity of more than 100 tons
of noodles every day. Different
brands (Gaggli, Dorfmühle, Bucki, Tulpen, Käfer), pack sizes,
and more than 30 different noodle versions satisfy the needs
of the customers. Five ultra-modern pasta lines are employed
to achieve this versatility and
flexibility of output and response
to customer demands. The main
sales area is Germany, and in
the state of Baden-Wurttemberg Buck is the market leader.
Buck noodles, however, also are
popular in Switzerland, France,
Austria, and in the Benelux.
The company attaches greatest importance to fulfilling
the high quality requirements
of the customers. In order to
meet these requirements Buck
only uses highest-quality raw
materials, and the complete
noodle production process is
closely monitored from start
to finish. Because of these
special quality prerequisites,
the „higher level“ IFS certification has been confirmed
for Buck GmbH & Co. KG. For
its final goods inspection the
company uses metal detectors
in the long noodle packing of
spaghetti and macaroni to
help implement the IFS standard. As one of the leading
manufacturers of industrial
metal detection technology,
S+S supplied its VARICON D
metal detection systems for
the IFS compliant inspection
of the noodle products. Karl
Eisele, commercial manager at
Buck, said of the S+S systems:
„The assessment system of IFS
determines that a gap in metal
detection found when auditing
will lead to a reduced score,
which endangers certification.
Quality inspection under international guidelines is mandatory and therefore the use of S+S
systems, individually matched
to our operating conditions,
ensures safety here. In the
food industry, this is critically
important to guarantee product
safety and liability.“
Due to its compact design the S+S VARICON-D metal detection system could be integrated
in the production line without any problems.
automatic transport was necessary at a right angle, a special
challenge which S+S met with no
problems.

80 units per minute
In this specific case the Gaggli
spaghetti and macaroni are examined at the end of the production line. 80 noodle packs of 250
grams each, or 40 units with a
weight of one kilo each, pass
through the S+S system per minute. Metallic contaminants may
originate from broken screen or
blade fragments, or may be due
to employee error, or machine
abrasion. The advantage of inte-
grating metal detection systems
in the outgoing goods department is that the products are
already packaged and that
further metal contamination is
not possible. S+S have integrated the VARICON D systems into
existing conveying lines. Due to
the compact design of the search
coils only minimal modifications
were required, and it was not
necessary to interrupt the production process. In one line, fully
High quality requirements
At Buck, S+S uses the GENIUS
control unit, equipped with serial
interface and logbook function.
It can be integrated in processes
without any problems and is therefore very well suited for applications in the food industry. All
events in connection with metal
detection are completely and
fully automatically stored in the
logbook.
As Karl Eisele sums up: „The S+S
systems specifically matched to
our requirements, were installed
in a very short time and offer
outstanding ease of operation.
Particularly the Auto Learn mode
allows people with little technical
experience to set-up the system
quickly and reliably. Highest quality and increased productivity are
of outstanding importance for us.
We were convinced by the high
accuracy of the S+S metal detection systems and their consistent
reliability in operation.“
