humanities credit towards graduation when taken as a freshman. Art 1 fulfills the prerequisite requirement for Art 2.
Major Concepts/Philosophy:
The purpose of this program is to create opportunities for personal expression through a variety of mediums. This
course provides a foundation in applying the elements and principles of design as the student explores media,
techniques and processes. Art History, Aesthetics, and Art Appreciation will be emphasized as students make
hands-on art projects. Higher order thinking skills and problem solving will be encouraged as students plan, design
and create. Art 1 gives students who are new to art classes, as well as experienced art students, a chance to further
develop their self esteem and expression capabilities. Students will also learn critical-thinking skills as they assess
their work as well as the works of others.
The year long (two semesters) course that comprise this program offered at the junior high school level are: Art 1,
Art 2, and Art 3.
