Secondary Curriculum Art - Art I District Course # Course Description Art 1 Open to: Grades 7, 8, 9 One Year Course Prerequisite: none Content: This year long (two semester course) is an introductory course to a variety of art experiences and art history using the elements and principles of design. The students will explore the fundamentals including, but not limited to: drawing, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, fiber art, and art history. This course fulfills a humanities credit towards graduation when taken as a freshman. Art 1 fulfills the prerequisite requirement for Art 2. Major Concepts/Philosophy: The purpose of this program is to create opportunities for personal expression through a variety of mediums. This course provides a foundation in applying the elements and principles of design as the student explores media, techniques and processes. Art History, Aesthetics, and Art Appreciation will be emphasized as students make hands-on art projects. Higher order thinking skills and problem solving will be encouraged as students plan, design and create. Art 1 gives students who are new to art classes, as well as experienced art students, a chance to further develop their self esteem and expression capabilities. Students will also learn critical-thinking skills as they assess their work as well as the works of others. The year long (two semesters) course that comprise this program offered at the junior high school level are: Art 1, Art 2, and Art 3. Studio Activities: Studio/classroom activities are an integral part of this program and provide instruction in the tools, materials, processes and equipment found in general use in studios, in both private and public institutions. The studio environment also provides cooperative learning opportunities.
