Dear Nellie,
Our three year old daughter wants to have the light on when she goes to bed and her dad
thinks we should tu rn it off. Please tell me what to do - she wakes up screaming very lou d
if we turn it off when we go to bed.
Thanks, Worried Mama
Dear Worried Mama,
Well the problem you have isn’t anythin g new and you certainly sh ouldn't feel alone many children have problems with changes to their sleep environment. If the poor dear is
used to having a light on t hen of course she is going t o be pretty stressed when it’s
turned off.
Its been my experience that as children grow up their imagination grows with t hem which
can lead t o bogey-men in every corner and a monster un der the bed. This is all perfectly
natural in my book (although if you watch all the talkin g heads on TV, they seem to f orget
what it was like to be a child and ramble on about all manner of foolishness).
If you want to be able to have your child sleep at nigh t without a light on you are basically

trying t o remove her ‘addiction’to s omething - so treat the situation the same as if you
were trying to quit smokin g or fatty foods! Wean her off the light n ot by going cold turkey, but by gradually reducing its bright ness over a period of a month or so. If you or
your husband are handy about the h ouse, look into installing a dimmer switch in her
room. If that isn’t an option, buy a bright lamp (but not one she can reach to turn up or
tip over!) with a dimmer switch. Eventually you should be able to switch from t he dimmed
light bulb t o a couple of night lights and eventually a sin gle one. I like the little LED kin d
that plug right into the wall myself - they work wonders for when the grandkids come by.

The Antigonish Chapter of Ca-r-ma.o rg
Cat Rescue Maritimes
We need your help!
The Antigonish Chapter of Ca-r-ma.org- Cat Rescue Maritimes is gearing up for its first s pring of
TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). We currently have 80 un-owned cats in colonies that are signed up for
TNR.
In order for a colon y to be considered for TNR, there must be a caregiver in place to provide food
and shelter. These are un-owned (mostly feral or semi-feral) cats that have been lucky enough t o
find a Good Samaritan (a caregiver). Caregivers sign a waiver agreeing to contin ue to care for the
colony and in return ca-r-ma starts trapping and surgically altering the cats so that the popu lation
of the colony will n ot continue to grow.
Ca-r-ma is all about humanely reducing the free roaming cat population. TNR has been proven to
be the only humane method of doing so.
Ca-r-ma will also remove small kittens from these colonies where possible, s ocialize them, and fin d
homes for them.
Our volun teers will be very busy this spring trapping and t ransporting these un-owned cats. We will
continue to fundraise bu t could really use your help in that regard.
We have started a program whereby individuals, families or businesses can Sponsor-A-Ca-r-ma-Cat
for TNR or Sponsor-A-Ca-r-ma-Kitten for socialization and potential adoption.
Sponsoring-A-Ca-r-ma-Cat is $10 per mon th for 12 months and Sponsoring-A-Ca-r-ma-Kitten is
$20 per month for 12 months. Our hope is to have 100 people spons or a cat for TNR. Since we are
a registered charity, a tax receipt will be issued at the end of each year that you can claim on your
tax return.
What we’re doin g is not only good for the cats but it ’s good for t he communit y as a whole as every
cat that is spayed or neutered reduces the num ber of kittens that will be born in t he wild.
If you’re interested in participating, let me know and we’ll get it set up. If you know of anyone else
who might be interested, please pass this along. The more people who are aware the better off the
cats will be.
