Well, it’s time again to celebrate the
great American sport of baseball.
And this year, the new movie “42”
is out on the life of Jackie Robinson, the first AfricanAmerican to break the color barrier in the Big Leagues,
signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. I can’t wait to see it.
And I’ll be listening for a special scene reported to me by a
Presbyterian friend. In the face of yet another challenge,
Dodger owner Branch Rickey counsels: “Robinson’s a
Methodist. I’m a Methodist. God’s a Methodist. We can’t
go wrong!”
In point of fact, Wesley Branch Rickey was a white
Methodist who graduated from Ohio Wesleyan, and
Robinson an African-American who moved to Pasadena as
a boy and was greatly influenced by the Rev. Karl Downs,
pastor of the Scott UMC in Pasadena. Robinson became
a friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Late in life, at the age
of 83 and wheel-chair bound, Rickey apologized to him
for not joining them at the march on Selma, Alabama, a
key turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. Methodists,
indeed!
So take a couple hours out and listen to Vin Scully
broadcast a game. You’ll feel better. For as another
writer said: “Baseball is a sport that celebrates the
amiable meanderings of timeless grace.”
That sounds pretty Methodist, too. Timeless grace. Free of
charge for one and all. Transforming lives. Transforming
the world.
Happy summer. Batter up!
All About Bees
The Partnership with God Sunday School Class invites
everyone to an entertaining and educational presentation
on beekeeping Sunday May 19 at 9 a.m. in Room 101.
Backwards Beekeepers is a group of organic, treatmentfree beekeepers in Los Angeles and other cities. They rely
on observation and natural practices to keep honey bees
thriving. Speaker Susan Rudnicki will discuss the group and
how to become God’s helpers with the
bees in our yards and neighborhoods.

Big Sunday Weekend 2013
The mission of Big Sunday is to build community through
community service. Since 1999, the organizers have been
“helping people help others.” On Big Sunday May 5, the
congregation of First UMC will worship in two places: in the
Sanctuary at the 10 a.m. service; and on the beach, as we
serve our local community.
Participants will be caring for creation by helping to clean
up our beaches. There are 35 slots available for First UMC.
Families and adults of all ages are invited to sign up. We
will gather at 9:30 a.m. at the Venice Pier (Washington
Blvd. and Ocean Front Walk) for a time of prayer and
celebration of Holy Communion. There will also be release
forms to fill out. The cleanup will take place from 10:00
a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
We give thanks and praise to God for the gift of this
beautiful world and the opportunity to serve as stewards of
such a gift. If you are interested, please contact Rev. Robert
English at [email protected].

Reception of New Members
C.A.S.T. Spring Performances
On Sunday March 24, First UMC welcomed 3 new members:
KCAST - The Radio Station
was written by First
UMC's Amy Flanders
for the Children's After
School Theater's 5th-12th
graders. Delight in songs
such as "Singing in the Rain," "I Dreamed a Dream" and
"Brush Up Your Shakespeare" as they tell the story of a
radio station on the verge of being shut down.
Cynthia Sheryna Benson – Profession of Faith (left)
Jennifer Renee Jacques – Transfer from Downey UMC (right)
David Shepherd Penson – Re-affirmation of Faith (middle)
Performances are Friday, May 17, 7 p.m., Saturday
and Sunday, May 18 and 19, at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are
$10/adults and $5/seniors/children.
Health Ministry Council Blood Drive
First UMC's Health Ministry Council’s blood drive on April 14
drew both church members and people from the community,
with 31 potential donors from age 16 to 84 registering in,
and 25 units of blood collected. Donors shared a small but
precious gift of themselves in order to help those who need
blood, often becoming true "life-savers." Five of the donors
spanned 3 generations from the same family. The Health
Ministry Council thanks all who came to donate blood,
invited others to donate, or volunteered, as well as choir
members who shared their delectable concert refreshments
to replenish donors.
LOOKING AHEAD
C.A.S.T.'s 1st-4th graders will be performing the musical
Annie, Jr. on Friday, May 31, 7 p.m.; Saturday, June 1,
