Holden Monster Raffle
The Willoughby Roos are luck to be a part of the 2015 Holden Monster
Raffle which will give away a Holden Colorado, Holden Cruze and a total
prize pool of over $125,000!
The Holden Monster Raffle is an annual event is truly an example of giving
back to grass roots rugby league as every cent we raise stays at the
club. Effectively this opportunity is $5,000 ‘free sponsorship’ for the Roos
courtesy of Holden – but only if we sell the tickets!
The Roos have been allocated a limited amount of books of $5 tickets which
will shortly be distributed through team managers to families to buy and sell
to friends. Importantly, the tickets are valuable to scammers and the club
is liable to pay for any lost tickets - so please handle the tickets and money
appropriately or this could be a fund-drainer rather than a fund-raiser.
Thanks to all Roos families who can help sell these tickets to raise money
for the club – and also good luck winning these awesome Holdens!

This week our U6s got a sleep in, a home game and fruit salad from our great
Sponsors Willoughby Fresh.
Maybe it was the trick because we had our first win! Yeah! Go Roo’s!!
Our first game we played Lane Cove Tigers and again saw our players step
in for the opposition to fill their team and have a game. A special mention and
thank you to Andrew Biggs who plays in the U7s for helping us out. 8 tries were
scored with a final result of 32-28.
Playing Asquith Magpies in our second game we were unfortunately beaten
28-20 but it is very exciting to see the U6s starting to pass the ball during play.
Such clever kids!
After the game we all celebrated everyone’s favourite trainer’s birthday singing
to her and giving her flowers. Happy Birthday Izzy!

Victory against Asquith this week wasn’t to be - but it wasn’t all negative with
many of our kids showing sound improvement and only two of the opposition
players scoring against us. It was a great effort but the fans are restless (which
is always bad news for a coach) so it’s now time to turn up the flames on our
attack and get some wins!
Ben was captain for the day and did a great job, particularly holding onto
the ball during runs at the start of the game and also moving up in defence,
too. Andrew B. also picked-up his defensive game showing greater tackling
conviction in the latter stages of the game – hopefully turning a corner in his
playing career. Charlie’s speed was excellent and he was unfortunate not to
find a gap and get over the line.
Raf was in everything once again, both defensively and in attack, scoring a
great try for his efforts. One of our other senior players, Toby, was admirable
out wide, often single-handedly defending large real estate being probed by the
opposition’s star player. Eliana was as elusive as ever with some weaving runs
as well as moving up fast in defence.
Josh was outstanding once again pulling-off textbook tackles consistently which
made the opposition avoid him when they could. Andrew P. showed good ball
security and is keen to regain his pre-season form when he scored his first
try. Will was solid - which has become the norm - and showed again that he is
ready to lift to the next level.
Player of the match went to Ibby for his fantastic busting runs close to the line
which bagged him two tries. Unfortunately it was Ibby’s final game in the blue
and gold as he has been signed by Chester Hill and will be relocating his family
next week. Well done, Ibby, and thank you for your time here at the Roos. It is
always sad to see someone leave but we all wish you the very best at your new
club!

The Willoughby “Thursday design” “McGrath” “High St Deli”, “Bear plumbing”
Roo’s Under 8’s travelled North again for round 4 to take on the newly formed
Kuringai Cubs. The Cubs were short on numbers and in a nice sporting
gesture 6 of our boys helped out playing for the Cubs swapping each third.
Eager for a first season win and smelling blood in the water, our boys were all
business scoring a total of 7 tries to 1.
A new tactic was employed having a designated dummy 1/2 and first receiver
to clean up the ruck and it worked a treat, we almost looked like a proper team
out there today! William M in the roll of dummy 1/2 got to every break down,
the boys not dropping 1 ball. (Great effort).
We scored 7 determined tries shared between 6 players, Lucas, Raf, Will
Wales, Giacomo, James and a great career first by Caleb beating at least 3
defenders. Anders and Hayden both came very close to scoring their first for
the season only just falling short, finding the sideline.
Matthew was again our best defender showing great tackling technique.
Giacomo scored the only try we conceded for the Cubs winning him “man of
the match” and getting him benched for next week!
Charlie played with the flue, he did some decisive running before having to
leave the field sick.
We missed Alfie today due to breaking his arm at school. Get well soon Alfie.
Great result boys (32-4) see you all at training.
Also special mention to the bloke that retrieved the ball from the bush...
Being the “Women in league round”, thanks to all the Grandmas, Mums and
Sisters who attend our games. Thanks to Deb Denton for scoring the round.

Last Saturday the Family Chiropractic Roos travelled to sunny Dural to take on
the Hills Hawks. In what was the Women in League round for all games it was
fitting for Junior Roo Diana Malas to be named captain and lead the team out
onto the ground.
The game started at speed with Willoughby quickly taking the advantage as
Marcos’ deft passing sent Dominic on his way up field only to be tackled just
short of the line. A quick play the ball and Willoughby was over for their first try.
Shortly after, a planned move (only learnt 20 mins prior) saw a beautiful inside
pass from Domenic hit Diesel at pace and he ran the length of the field. This
was to be the first of 3 length of the field tries for Diesel who is fast becoming
our “go to” player. The game then settled down a bit as the Hawks tried to
counter but in defence both Tom and Will did a mountain of work whilst
Connor (returning from international duties) relished the marker role and
didn’t miss any of the Hawks players. Captain Diana, as usual, led from the
front with some great tackling and hit ups with Willoughby going into the break
comfortable leaders.
The second half started a bit more controlled than the first as Will and Tom
jumped into the playmaker roles and called the shots. It was great to have
Taj the Steam Train back on the field as he scattered defenders left and right
whilst front row partner Josh once again used his size and pace to run over
brave defenders who didn’t move out of his way. And when Taj and Josh let
up, in stepped Patrick who was his usual bustling self making some great
tackles and virtually impossible to stop when attacking the line. With our big
players making yards the field opened up to Connor and Domenic who made
huge searching runs whilst Tom and Will took advantage by making some
great darting runs which led to a couple of tries.
I could go on but that would ruin the video highlights and great photos on
facebook. The Roos ran out winners 34-22. 3 out of 3 for the year! Highlights
- 3 tries to Diesel whilst deserved Player of the Match went to Connor for his
outstanding defence. Fantastic team effort by all players.

Great speed by Diesel who
bagged 3 tries today.
This week the Portfolio Housing Group U10s hosted the Lane Cove Tigers in a
highly-anticipated replay of the 2014 Grand Final.
With both teams at full strength and on a dry track this promised to be a high
quality game. The opening 10 minutes was a classic softening up period as
both sides probed the other’s line looking for gaps. The Roos kept up the
pressure in defense to force a couple of key turnovers which they turned into
points. The Tigers hit back and they went to the break with the Roos leading
12-6.
In the half-time huddle the boys agreed to stick to the game plan and keep the
pressure on. This led to two more quick tries and minimal possession for the
Tigers who got one back close to full time. In the end a cracking 22-12 win to
the Roos.
All the boys gave a 110%. Standouts include Johnny leading from the front in
attack and defense, Joey an expert job of marshalling the team on-field and
exploiting holes in the Tigers line, Hamish with several strong runs, Liam (2
tries) and Alex an awesome job to cover the Tiger speedsters, Will L in only
his third game, Theo his best game to date. Will A (1 try) picked up MoM with
several big hits out of marker in the second half and some strong runs at the
edges of the tiring Tigers pack.
Go Roos!

The boys headed back to Willoughby a little too confident after their easy win
last weekend, some even questioning the viability of our competition and with
good reason, a small comp of only 3 other teams who they regularly beat.
However, things got a little complicated with some late withdrawals due to
injury forcing a reshuffle of positions. I’m wondering if the boys now feel they
have to simply turn up and victory is assured. The game itself was a fairly
even contest and after getting our nose in front with a little under 5 to go the
boys virtually handed Berowra victory and hopefully learnt a valuable lesson in
how you must shut a game down by simply controlling the football.
To Berowra’s credit they toiled hard and crossed in the final minute of play to
hand the boys their second loss in 2 years. Berowra 18 Roos 14. As I have
told the boys before you learn a lot more about how your team is going in
defeat than victory. Thanks Berowra, no more complacency, time to start
taking the competition seriously.
In the end it ended up 3 tries all, with the difference on the score board being
2 unsucessful conversions. We had kicked 8 from 8 the previous week. Opps!
Overall I did feel the boys were a little flat across the park with Jack and
Lachie probably stand outs up front and Paddy chipping in with his customary
cover tackle brilliance. I went with Mac for Man of the Match. In only his
second game of League his personal game and involvement has increased
dramatically with every minute on the park. Tries to Jack, Madian and Lachie.
Goal to Paddy.

What a great game of rugby league the under 12 Roos had last week going
down 24-22 in the last play of the game. What can I say the boys tried hard
and are starting to get to know one another better as the weeks go on.
Try scorers for the day where Charlie Marshall, Daniel Kell, Geordy Coulits
and Jack Galloway.
I thought Will Dadach was player of the day running the ball up hard and
making some really good tackles but we still need to work on things as a
team so hope to see all the boys at training .

North Sydney Bears 2015 Development
Squads announced
Five Willoughby Roos players have been selected in the Under 14s
Norths Development Squad in 2015:
• Zac Dadich
• Ahmed Darwich
• Alex Krahmalov
• Guiliano Parisi
• Thomas Paterson
Each year, talented players from within the North Sydney District
Junior Rugby League are selected to be part of the U13, U14 and U15
North Sydney Bears Development Squads. Selection in these squads
provides players with the tools to improve their game in readiness for the
prestigious Junior Representative competitions in the NSWRL – Harrold
Matthews (U16s) and S.G. Ball (U18s).
These competitions cannot be understated as they are the typical
pathway from junior rugby league to the professional senior competitions
- Ron Massey Cup, NSW Cup and Telstra NRL Premiership. All junior
players should be aware of the North Sydney Bears Development Squads
and the opportunities that selection could bring!
The Development Squads will train as a North Sydney Bears team and
in 2015 will compete in four games against three of our neighbouring
districts – the Sydney Roosters, Manly Sea Eagles and Balmain Tigers.
Congratulations to these talented Willoughby Roos players – we look
forward to seeing some Red & Black tracksuits around the park!
