MICHIGAN TECH TO HOST BOWLING GREEN IN 2017 WCHA CHAMPIONSHIP
Huskies to face Falcons on Saturday, March 18 at 7:07 p.m. ET;
Winner earns Broadmoor Trophy and automatic bid to NCAA Tournament
EDINA, Minn. – March 12, 2017 – The “Battle for the Broadmoor” is set, as Michigan Tech will host
Bowling Green in the 2017 Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Championship at 7:07 p.m. ET
on Saturday, March 18 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich. The winner of this
single-game championship will earn the Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA Tournament champion and will
receive the league’s automatic bid to the 2017 Division I Men’s Hockey Championship.
Michigan Tech, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, swept seventh-seeded Lake Superior State in the
quarterfinal round before outlasting No. 3 seed Minnesota State in a three-game, semifinal-round series.
Against the Mavericks, the Huskies sandwiched 5-1 and 4-1 victories around a 1-0, shutout loss; Michigan
Tech has now outscored its opponents by a 23-7 margin in the WCHA postseason.
Fourth-seeded Bowling Green swept past No. 5 seed Ferris State in the quarterfinals, then became the
lone road team to win a series during the WCHA Playoffs by upsetting Bemidji State, the league’s regular
season champion in the semis. The Falcons used an overtime win Friday and a one-goal victory Saturday
to earn the sweep in Bemidji. Bowling Green has now won seven-straight games, the program’s longest
winning streak since the 1987-88 season – a campaign that ended in the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan Tech has played in four WCHA playoff championship games (1962, 1965, 1996 and 2015),
winning twice (1962 and 1965); the Huskies also earned WCHA co-playoff titles in 1960, 1969, 1970,
1974, 1975, 1976 and 1981. Bowling Green will play in its first league championship game since the 1988
Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) title contest.
The Huskies swept the lone regular season meeting between the teams, winning 3-1 and 2-1 at the Slater
Family Ice Arena on Dec. 9 and 10.
