Andrew Haydon, Views from the Gods Little Soldier was founded in 2010 to promote innovative cross-cultural artistic collaborations. We use physical comedy, devising techniques and live music to produce funny yet touching shows, exploiting our Spanish backgrounds and English setting to create an individual take on new writing and classic texts. The company is led by actresses Patricia Rodríguez and Mercè Ribot, supported by producer Bridget Floyer. Little Soldier has toured extensively in the UK and internationally in Warsaw, Madrid and New York. Their work has been critically acclaimed by public and press, including The Stage, Time Out and Exeunt. Previous show ‘You and Me’ was awarded an Argus Angel at the Brighton Fringe 2014 and ‘The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha’ received the Stage Award for Acting Excellence at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014. About the production An unpretentious, inventive and smartly silly delight. An award winning tongue-in-cheek treatment of Cervantes novel. Donald Hutera, Exeunt Magazine With a three-quarters Spanish, three-quarters female and a token English Bloke, Little Soldier sets of to re-enact one of the most influential works of world literature. Their mammoth task would be easier if any of the following were true: they’d read the book, had enough actors or heeded the warnings of Terry Gilliam. This critically acclaimed production continues to have the company’s trademarks: combination of languages, live music by the hand of Spanish classic guitarist Maria Camahort and physical comedy. In this occasion, they present a truly engaging and hilarious show that has been charming audiences across the UK and abroad. Their mammoth task would be easier if any of the following were true: they’d read the book, had enough actors or heeded the warnings of Terry Gilliam. The production follows the style of Little Soldier’s Brighton Fringe run and national tours of You and Me, a bitter-sweet physical comedy about dementia, and growing old away from home. Here, the company contrast the intimate with the epic, with Little Soldier’s combination of languages with live music and physical comedy, presenting an imaginative and provocative adventure of immense proportions, to be taken with a pinch of salt (and a handlebar moustache). Dramaturg Tiffany Wood received the NSDF Sunday Times Playwriting Award for Shaking Cecilia. Her new writing has appeared at The Bush (Roundabout, 2012) and Soho Theatre (Gravitons). Aside from his work as an associate artist with Told By An Idiot, Stephen Harper has also worked with the RSC, Trestle and The Clod Ensemble, and performed at the National Theatre, Sheffield Crucible and Staffordshire’s New Vic. Little Soldier Productions Co-Artistic Director Mercè Ribot said: “Taking on Don Quixote has felt a bit like deciding to have a baby. Were we prepared to take on that challenge and responsibility? Could we afford it? It was daring even for an established company, but for us, when we are still quite new, was it just madness? And of course, the logic told us not to do it, at least just yet… but the heart speaks differently, and has its own particular desires. Ours set us a challenge which very much mirrors that of Don Quixote the dreamer, the madman who jumps on his steed and sets off for the unknown. He doesn’t have much aside from his epic conviction, incredible passion and relentless persistence. Now in the early delirium of parenthood, we invite everyone to celebrate the joy and madness with us, the ‘there is never a right time’; the ‘we’ll do it when we grow up’… We are aiming for the moon and won’t settle for less. This is Little Soldier.” Praise for The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (2014): “Technically brilliant and jaw-droppingly entertaining” The Stage “The three plays put the audience in fits of laughter” The Broadway Baby “Hilariously dirty adaptation” Time Out “An unpretentious, inventive and smartly silly delight” Exeunt “Hilarious and undeniable charming” A Younger Theatre “Their display of physical comedy ranges from charmingly traditional to brilliantly innovative” The Skinny 11 Contact: Rebecca Targett [email protected] [Type here] 07701021424 Editors notes: Founded to promote innovative cross-cultural artistic collaborations, Little Soldier uses physical comedy, devising techniques and live music to produce funny yet touching shows, exploiting their Spanish backgrounds and English setting to create an individual take on new writing and classic texts. Why a classic like Don Quixote? Don Quixote is one of the longest, most complex and ambitious projects we could think of as a young company. Since it was such a crazy idea we thought it was the perfect impossible dream to pursue. Pretty much in the same way as Don Quixote could see giants where everybody else could only see windmills. We started playing in a room with a fantastic group of people and we came to the conclusion that the material was really good fun. Where did you meet each other? We all met in different contexts. Patricia, Merce and Stephen met in various workshops. Maria came to the company later, almost as an accident. She was there at the right place at the right time just when we were trying desperately to incorporate beautiful things to a nonsensical bunch of improvisations. Do you improvise a lot during the show? Yes, all the time. There is a structure, of course, but a high percentage of the performance is created with the audience during the show. We have so much fun. How being Spanish influences the show itself? Oh, totally, it is part of our DNA. We’ve been in England for a long time, more than 10 years, and most of the team is English, but it appears in the show because we always want to think about personal stories. We’ve put some Spanish into it, some Spanish songs and Spanish folklore, and we think that all these cultural references enrich the piece. We don’t shy away from it. So it’s trying to incorporate that and being very honest about who we are and where we come from, but also embracing our English culture too 15 Contact: Rebecca Targett [email protected] [Type here] 07701021424 Template Mail-out Re: An award winning hilarious take on Don Quijote comes to [your venue] Dear [name] ‘The ingenious gentleman Don Quijote of La Mancha’ is an award winning tongue-in-cheek take of the Cervantes novel.
