PRAYER FOR HCPT PILGRIMAGES IN 2016
We thank you for bringing us together in Lourdes and for watching over our HCPT
family for the past 60 years.
Through this pilgrimage we ask you to change our lives
and the lives of all who support us.
With the help of Our Lady and Saint Bernadette, make
us always thankful for your goodness and willing to
help each other.
Through Christ Our Lord.
Amen

LOURDES PRAYER BOOK - LPB
The prayer resources in this booklet will
follow the gospels and the readings of the
day in the HCPT Easter pilgrimage Prayer
Book. Hymn numbers will refer to them as
LPB numbers! It contains prayers for the
baths, water liturgy, the sacrament of the
sick and the stations of the cross.
Of course, all groups have their
own little traditions with their
group candles etc. Here we
hope to offer you some
additional ideas which you can
adapt for your own purposes.
You can pick and choose from
the following pages as much or
as little as you like.
Your group chaplain may, of
course, want to use their own
resources.
Each page is intended for use by
the person leading the group's
prayer activity. Additional "child
friendly" photocopiables and
resources are all together at the
back of the booklet.
What is this? This is a QR code. You can scan it with a smartphone
or tablet (download a QR reading app) and it will take you to
additional resources such as songs or videos which can add an
extra dimension to your prayer time.
If you have access to the internet in your hotel you may be able to
show montages of photographs etc during times of reflection and watch
some of the HCPT's jubilee films. There is a google drive, to which we
have added some items! Try it!

RECURRING IDEAS RELATED TO OUR THEME, AND DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY
“Diamond of the Day”
Each day we can thank God for our experience of Lourdes through a different “Diamond of the Day” A
figure who can form the focus of our prayer.
Day 1 and 2: Bernadette - who answered Mary’s call.
Tuesday: Mary - Who asked us to come in procession - the focus is on the
Torchlight Procession.
Wednesday: Jesus - As we go in the baths and remember our baptism, and
find out about meeting Jesus in a special way during the Mass, and
tomorrow in the Blessed Sacrament Procession
Thursday: God Our heavenly Father, as we experience God’s love, and give
thanks for 60 years of HCPT
Friday: The Holy Spirit - our helper and guide as we say “Thanks be to
God” for our week together and look forward to returning home renewed
and filled with God’s spirit.
“Share the Sparkle” In your group bag you will have a diamond, in a special bag. At prayerful moments
across the week you may like to “share the sparkle” and pass the diamond around the group, welcoming
people’s contributions as they are invited to share their thoughts or prayers whilst they are holding it.
Because different groups arrive on different days, the resources to be used at the beginning and end of the
week are flexible. For example, one night you may wish to have night prayer at the Grotto. Sharing the story
of Bernadette’s experiences at the place where it all happened may make it all the more special.
THE TRUST PRAYER
The HCPT Trust Prayer is said at HCPT events and was written by our founder Brother Michael Strode.
Dear Loving God, in Lourdes,
Where Mary came and spoke with Bernadette,
She showed your love for us
In a wonderful way.
Thank you for touching us
With your love.
Help us to bring your love
To all those we are able to help,
Especially our families, our friends,
And all those we meet in the Trust
Always and forever.
Amen.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
St Bernadette, pray for us.

TRUST-WIDE ACTIVITIES
THANKS BE TO GOD FOR….
We would like all groups to come up with a BIG and BOLD piece of art work, showing what your group are
thankful for. It would be great if everyone in the group could make a big picture showing someone or
something you want to say THANKS BE TO GOD for. . .
Look out for instructions in The Tatler to tell you where to take them. They might
end up on the Big Screens during the Trust Mass. They might be processed in
during the liturgy. That is why it is a good idea to put them on card, so that they
are not floppy!
SIGNING FOR THANKS BE TO GOD…
Here is a video of some of our children showing us the Makaton signs for Thanks be to God!
The sign for “thanks” is this:
The sign for “God” is this:
God!
So now when we say “Thanks be to God!” you can sign it as well!

Group Candle
The group candle can be blest and lit for the first time in Lourdes. As it is lit, invite
everyone to begin thinking of their favourite part of the day.
Activity
Group leader to put all group members in pairs or threes. Ask them to find out about
each other, through questions such as: What are they most looking forward to about
the pilgrimage? Who lives in their house at home? Then ask them to introduce their
partner to the rest of the group. Can we remember everyone’s names?
Story
Here is a Link the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection told with Lego. If you can’t
see it, use the same story from the Lourdes Prayer Book.
Reflection: Who went to anoint Jesus’ body? What had happened? How did they
feel? Would they want to thank God?
At first the women were worried and sad. Do we want to say thank you for things
that make us worried or sad? Not usually! But at that point the women didn't realise
that something wonderful had happened! Now we know what really happened, we
can say “Thanks be to God” for raising Jesus to new life. We thank God that death
isn't the end.
Prayer
The response to the prayers is: Thanks be to God!
Thanks be to God!
Prayer:
For all the people we have met today
Response:

May the God who called our father Abraham to journey into the unknown, and guarded him
and blessed him, protect us too and bless our journey. May His confidence support us as we
set out, may His spirit be with us on the way, and may He lead us back to our homes in
peace. Those we love, we commend to His care. He is with them, we shall not fear. As for
ourselves, may His presence be our companion, so that blessing may come to us and to
everyone we meet. Blessed are you, Lord, Whose presence travels with His people. Amen
Diamond of
the Day
Today’s “Diamond of the Day” is St Bernadette. We say “Thanks be to God” for her, because
she answered Mary’s invitation to come to the Grotto. How is Bernadette like the children in
our group? She was 14 at the time of Mary’s visits to her. She had asthma, she missed a lot of
school due to illness, her dad had no job, she lived in poverty, but she didn't complain.
Story
Listen to Bernadette’s account of the apparitions from page 6 of the Lourdes prayer book.
Activity
Can you act out the part of the story where Bernadette goes to tell the priest the Lady’s
name? You will need 4 group members to be the narrator, Mary, Bernadette and the priest,
Fr Peyramale.
Optional props: a piece of paper and a pen.
(Bernadette and Fr Peyramale standing near each other. Mary slightly apart from them.)
Narrator: Everyone wanted to know who the lady was.
Bernadette: She wants us to build a church and have a procession.
Fr Peyramale: Well, if we are going to do that, then we need to know who she is! Ask her
what her name is.
Narrator: So, Bernadette kept asking the lady.
Bernadette: What is your name? Please tell us!
Narrator: The lady just smiled. So Bernadette took paper and a pen. Finally, she raised her
eyes to heaven and said...
Mary: I am the Immaculate conception.
Narrator: Bernadette kept saying the name over and over again, so that she didn't forget it.
Bernadette: I am the immaculate conception... I am the immaculate conception... I am the
immaculate conception...
Narrator: And went all the way back to Fr Peyramale.
Fr Peyramale: Did she tell you her name?
Bernadette: She said; I am the immaculate conception.
Narrator: Fr Peyramale was amazed! He knew that this
unusual name meant that this lady was truly Mary, the
mother of Jesus.

Story
Today’s diamond of the day was St Bernadette. If you didn’t get chance to act out the
story this morning, perhaps you could do it now! Or maybe you would like to do it
again with a different cast?
Or move on to the next part of the Story…
The beautiful lady who appeared to Bernadette above a rosebush in the grotto of
Massabielle was God's Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. She appeared to
Bernadette eighteen times and spoke with her. She told Bernadette that she should
pray for sinners.
Many people did not believe Bernadette when she spoke of her vision. She had to
suffer a lot. But one day Our Lady told Bernadette to dig in the mud. As she did, a
spring of water began to flow. The next day it continued to grow larger and larger.
Many miracles happened when people began to use this water.
When Bernadette was older, she became a sister. She was always very humble and
did not want to be praised. She did not want to receive special treatment just
because she had actually seen the Blessed Virgin.
Although her own health was poor, she helped care for the sick and elderly sisters.
She died in 1879 at the age of thirty-six. Her last words were: "Holy Mary, pray for
me, a poor sinner."
Reflection: We have seen the church that Bernadette was asked to build, and we
have seen the spring. May they help us to have more faith, and trust God
because we have seen them, and been there ourselves.

Hail Mary.

MORNING PRAYER
Tuesday Morning Prayer
Music
O Mary our Mother (The Lourdes Hymn which we will sing again at the Torchlight Procession
tonight) LPB 93
Group Candle
As we light the candle this morning, we think about our mother’s or the people who look after
us every day.
Diamond of
the Day
Mary, God’s mother is our diamond for today. Everyone has or has had a mother, so let’s say
Thanks Be to God for everyone who looks after us, as Mary looked after Jesus when he was
growing up. We don’t know much about Jesus when he was young, but we can presume
that he did all the usual things that children do, including worry his mother by going missing.
Story
Mary loses Jesus in the temple.
When Jesus was twelve years old, Mary and Joseph took him with them to Jerusalem for the
Feast of the Passover. On the way home there was such a huge crowd, they did not know
Jesus wasn't with them. When they went back they found him in the Temple talking to the
teachers and the doctors of the law. He told them, "Did you not know that I must be about my
Father's business?" He went back to Nazareth and was obedient to them. Jesus grew in
wisdom, stature, and in favour with God and men.
Activity
As you colour the picture from the back of the booklet (labelled Tuesday Morning)
you could think of these questions
Have any of the helpers in your group ever been lost?
What is it like when we get lost?
How do we keep safe in Lourdes?
Who would be very worried if we got lost?
There is a colouring picture to go with this story in the additional resources at the back of the
book.
We pray for our mothers and carers at home:
Dear Lord, thank you for our mums and dads and all the people who look after us and love
us. Sorry for the times we worry them, or upset them, or forget how hard they work to look
after us. Please fill their hearts with your love, so that they know we are grateful for everything
they do for us, even if we don't say thank you. Amen.

Today, our diamond is Jesus. Tomorrow we will spend time with Jesus at the Blessed

Mary appeared in Lourdes so that more people would get them message about her son
Jesus. God wants us to know that he loves us very much.

Discussion
Tomorrow afternoon, after our Trust Mass, we will again gather together in this
beautiful place with God’s creation smiling on us and his sunshine making
everything bright for our Blessed Sacrament Procession (Even if it is raining). This is a
special time to spend with Jesus as he is with us in the bread. It isn't like Mass,
where we go up to communion. It is time to simply be with Jesus, and to pray.
This is Jesus himself walking among us.
We could imagine that we are like those five thousand people who were sat around
to listen to him and to marvel as he fed them all with the five loaves and the two fish
that the little boy brought for his packed lunch. We can think of the times that the
disciples sat and listened to his wonderful teaching which he gave them with great
authority because He was the living God, present among them as a man.
Discuss the following:
1. Why is the blessed sacrament procession so special to us?
2. What does we mean by “Jesus himself walking among us”

Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden
these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for
this is what you were pleased to do… for I am gentle and humble of heart.
Reflection: This was the Gospel at the Trust Mass today.
We don't have to be famous, important or very clever to understand God's love for us.
Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for all the love you give us. We have heard your message. Thank you for
revealing it to us all. Thank you for showing that we don't have to be very rich, important,
famous or clever. We are very very important and loved just as we all are. You have made
us all as we are, as part of your plan for the world.
Thank you for blessing the HCPT since it's tiny beginning, into the big family it is today, so
that we have all had the opportunity to come to know your son Jesus better.
!
Amen
Invite the group to spend some time in quiet prayer listening to the music and looking at
the photos.
The HCPT started from one tiny group, from Chailey Heritage. Then, they joined up with
the National Schoolís pilgrimage, travelling with children from St Josephs Primary school in
Haywards Heath.
Now it has spread all over the world. You are part of something very special. How are you
going to help it grow?

Year of Mercy:
Diamond of
the Day
The Holy Spirit helps us do kind things for others these are
called acts of Mercy. Here is an explanation of the holy door:
Activity
One of the things that Mary asked Bernadette to do was dig in the mud in the floor of the
grotto. When she did, there was a small dirty trickle of water. It became stronger, and
bubbled into a spring of clean water.
This water is still flowing today. People who come to Lourdes can drink, wash and bathe in
this water. You can take Lourdes water home in a bottle.
When your group goes to the baths, or washes at the taps, then you can experience it for
yourself. Helping someone wash is an act of mercy, picture this story…
Story
Taken from http://www.cathchild.org.uk/resources/resource/
Close your eyes. You are Peter, Jesus’ disciple. You are in Jerusalem, on your way to have supper with
Jesus and the other disciples. How do you feel about this? (PAUSE)
You walk down the street in the Lower City. The sounds of the bustling market surround you. You hear the
clatter of hooves and smell the scent of perfumes in the markets. You hear the sounds of people’s voices.
What can you hear them say? (PAUSE)
You feel your tunic scratch against your arms. It has been a long, hot day. Your leather sandals rub against
your feet. As you pass houses the smells of supper follow you.
What are you thinking? (PAUSE)
You approach a wooden door. You lift up your hand to push the door open.
The room is full of people. How do they greet you? (PAUSE)
You see everybody move to sit down around the low table. You sit down on the floor next to Jesus. How do
you feel about this? (PAUSE) You can smell the salted fish and fresh bread that has been prepared for your
supper. You are very hungry.
Jesus is silent. All of a sudden you see him stand up, take off his outer tunic, and tie a towel around his
waist. What do you think he is doing? (PAUSE)
Jesus picks up a jug of water to the side, pours it into a basin and kneels beside the disciple sitting
opposite you. What look do you see on the disciple’s face as Jesus washes his feet? (PAUSE)
You see Jesus walking towards you with the basin. Jesus stops, and looks closely at you. You can feel the
eyes of all of the disciples watching you. How do you feel? (PAUSE)
Jesus kneels at your feet. You say "Never at any time will you wash my feet!" Why do you say this? (PAUSE)
Jesus looks up to you and says "If I do not wash your feet you will no longer be my disciple." How does this
make you feel? (PAUSE)
You say to Jesus, "Lord, do not wash only my feet, then! Wash my hands and head, too!”
Jesus pours the cooling water on your hot, sore feet. How does it feel? (PAUSE)
You see Jesus walking around the room, washing all of the disciples’ feet in turn. You see Jesus put his
outer garment back on and return to sit on the floor next to you.
You look around the table. How have the other disciples reacted to what has happened? (PAUSE)
Jesus explains why he has washed your feet. He says “I am telling you the truth: slaves are never greater
than their master, and messengers are never greater than the one who sent them.”
What do you think Jesus means by this? (PAUSE)
How do you feel about Jesus washing your feet? Are you happy? Or unhappy? Do you want to say
something to Jesus? Or ask him a question? (PAUSE)

NIGHT PRAYER
Music
Do not be afraid I am with you ( I will come to you in the silence) See the back of the booklet.
Group Candle Maybe tonight you will take your candle down to the Grotto, to burn in Lourdes long after we
have all gone home.
Activity
Diamond of the day:
As you pass around the diamond, nominate another group member and say why they were
a precious diamond today!
For example: Clare is a Diamond because she helped me find my lost brush.
Mark is a diamond, because he made me really proud when he read a bidding prayer at
Mass.
Story
Is there a story from earlier in the week which has particularly resonated with your group?
You could read it again, or read today’s gospel again and reflect on it.
Souvenirs!!!
What souvenirs have you bought? (Maybe show them) In Lourdes we get to experience
something incredible, and so we want to take something home, to remind ourselves of it. But
somehow, these little objects can’t capture the magic of what we have been through, they
can only jog our memories once we are back home.
And so the greatest souvenir of all is God’s love that we have found here. The Love that Jesus
has for us. So, let’s have some quiet time with Jesus, and this prayer is another sort of
souvenir to take home. You can do it whenever you like, alone or in groups. And maybe like
Bernadette, return to the grotto every day in your heart.
Silent Prayer
This is a copy of a prayer card from Br Michael, the doctor who started HCPT. Adapted from Fr John Dalrymple.
Silent Prayer
Sometimes you may feel that thinking about God, or even talking to Him is not enough - you
want God Himself!
At such times, choose a word like ‘Jesus’ or ‘Father” which will remind you of his love for you.
Keep on saying the word slowly with plenty of silences in between.
In those silences we place the love which is in our hearts. . . .
and allow God-space to enter in.
Love grows in silence.
Silence leaves space for God.
