Second Sunday in Ordinary Time~ January 19, 2014
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove
from heaven and remain upon him.
I did not know him, but the one who sent me
to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit
come down and remain, he is the one
who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified
that he is the Son of God.”

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“Now the Lord has spoken who formed me as his
servant from the womb….” Isaiah 49:5
God has formed each of us as His servants from the
womb. He blessed us with unique gifts and He provided
us with the talents and skills we would need to do His
work. If we do not fulfill the unique vision that God had
for us alone, who will do it?
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
The list of those who contributed to the
offering for our Christmas flowers/
decorations and the names of those in
whose memory the donations were made appears on
pages 7-10 in this bulletin. Thank you to all who so
generously donated. Please keep those we are
remembering in your prayers.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JANUARY 19, 2014
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Among 2013’s deaths in the world of politics,
public affairs and various other pursuits were:
 James M. Buchanan, Nobel-winning libertarian
economist who liked to point out that politicians and
government officials can be motivated by self-interest
and a wish to exercise power, which may lead to
government expansion and increased spending, with
harmful results for people, such as debt. He thought
government spending has become permanently
disconnected from revenue.
 Ed Koch, a Newark native who became a
colorful three-term New York City Mayor. Koch, a friend
of New York’s late Cardinal John O’Connor, once refused
to pose for a photo with a tiger, saying, “The mayor is
not a coward—and the mayor is also not a schmuck.”
When physical hiring requirements for New York fire
fighters were being challenged, he replied that he
thought the qualifying test for men and women alike
should be, “Can you carry a 210-pound mayor out of a
second-story building?” After he lost a re-election bid,
when people told him they wished he was still mayor,
Koch often shot back, “The people voted me out, and
now they must be punished.” He also said, “I’ll get a
better job, but you won’t get a better mayor.” (After his
time in office, Koch became a spokesman for both
UltraSlimFast® and Dunkin’ Donuts®, showing that he
knew how to appeal to people across the board.) He
bought a grave in the only Manhattan cemetery still
offering them, run by Trinity Episcopal Church at
Broadway and 155th Street. He said he wanted to make
it easier for his former constituents to visit him. “I’m
extending an open invitation.”
 Margaret Thatcher, British Prime
Minister in the 1980s, a decidedly conservative
leader who called herself “a conviction politician,” not a
consensus one. She worked with President Ronald
Reagan and Pope John Paul II to overthrow Communism
and was a staunch opponent of Socialism as well.
 Kenneth Minogue, critic of big government and its
bureaucracies, and defender of Christianity, which he
said “has been central to creating a gentle and decent
(and philosophically lively) civilization of such power
that our problem is accommodating the people who
want to join it. ‘Go thou and sin no more is way ahead
of beheading or stoning sinners and probably ahead of
counseling or psychotropic medication as well.”
 Nelson Mandela, who after being an imprisoned
opponent of apartheid for 27 years, became South
Africa’s first democratically elected President, and
dedicated his administration to achieving racial
healing.
 Roy Brown, designer of the ill-fated, stylistically
outlandish Ford Edsel, trumpeted as revolutionary.
(continued above)
3
Only 100,000 were sold from 1957-1959. (A recession
didn’t help.) Today, surviving models can fetch
$100,000.
 Joseph Unanue, who oversaw the growth
of Goya Foods from a family-run grocery to the
nation’s largest seller of Hispanic food.
 Barbara Piasecka Johnson, who married
Seward Johnson Sr. after being his maid. A daughter of
Polish farmers, she came to the U. S., met a barbecue
guest who told her that her employer was looking for a
cook, got the job, was unsatisfactory at it, and was then
transferred to the maid’s job—after which she married
her boss after he had divorced his wife. The boss was
the inheritor of the Johnson and Johnson fortune. The
two married in 1971, when she was 34 and he was 76.
“Basia,” as she was called, assembled an impressive art
collection. Upon her husband’s death, there was an
unprecedented legal battle over Johnson’s $500 million
fortune, with Basia getting most of it. Besides her art
interest, she supported many charitable causes.
 Robert Byrne, international chess grandmaster,
former U. S. champion, and longtime chess columnist for
the New York Times. He lost to Bobby Fischer in the
1963-1964 U. S. Championship, in which Fischer, for the
only time in the tournament’s history, won all eleven
games. Byrne came closest to beating him—and, in fact,
many spectators thought he was nearing victory when
Byrne shocked everyone by resigning. He did so
because he realized that he had fallen into a fatal Fischer
trap. At least he got some “glory” by seeing his doom!
 Nicholas Oresko, Congressional Medal of
Honor recipient, a Bayonne native and long-time
Tenafly resident, who won his medal for his
actions of 1-23-45 during the Battle of the Bulge,
when, despite being seriously wounded, he singlehandedly wiped out two German machine gun
emplacements, killing twelve of the enemy.
 Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47 assault
rifle, which is easy to make, light and durable, and
deadly-efficient. 100 million have been made. Although
Kalashnikov regretted the gun’s wide use by guerillas, he
said, in a 2003 interview, “I sleep soundly. The fact that
people die because of an AK-47 is not because of the
designer, but because of the politics.” Yet his conscience
continued to gnaw at him and shortly before he died he
wrote to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church
saying, “The pain in my soul is unbearable. I keep asking
myself the same, unsolvable question: If my assault rifle
took people’s lives that means that I, Mikhail
Kalashnikov,… am responsible for people’s deaths. The
longer I live, the more often that question gets into my
brain, the deeper I go in my thoughts and guesses about
why the Almighty allowed humans to have devilish
desires of envy, greed and aggression.”

the Christmas Season—Sunday, January 12. “An
Afternoon of Christmas Joy,” featuring our wonderful
choir and showcasing the talents of our professional
musicians and leaders of song, was enjoyed by
hundreds of Saint Joseph parishioners and friends. The
artists entertained a full church with traditional,
religious, and contemporary Christmas music, including
some original arrangements by Monroe Quinn, and the
audience was invited to sing along with the choir to
several classic Christmas carols.

MOMENT WITH HOLY MARY
“JESUS IS THERE ... FOR YOU!”
—EVERY FRIDAY
A MEN’S AND WOMEN’S
CORNERSTONE REFLECTION
Moment with Holy Mary is a prayer
group that seeks the Lord through Mary
and meets every Friday (except First
Fridays) from 9:00 –10:00 am right after the 8:30 am
Mass.
“Through life’s journey the only time we
prayed was in time of need. Our whole philosophy
about religion changed tremendously after we attended
Cornerstone. It had a great impact on our lives. We
always went to church, but Cornerstone made us
realize that Jesus is there for us and made us become
aware of the power of the prayer.”
John and Linda Pepe
Through prayers to Our Blessed Mother, the Psalms and
meditation on Scripture, we offer praise, thanksgiving
and sorrow for sin while growing in our Faith.
Consider spending a “moment with Holy Mary” often.

ANNUAL MEN’S WEEKEND RETREAT
—FEBRUARY 21-23
The Jesuit retreat house at Loyola in Morristown
offers a time to relax away from business problems and
family worries; a time to reflect and get a fresh
perspective on your life; a time to pray, to reawaken the
sense of the reality of God, and to grow in the precious
gift of faith. The men of the parishes in the Northern
Valley are invited to join their brothers in Christ on
retreat the weekend of February 21-23, 2014.
JANUARY 25
ST. JOHN NEUMANN PASTORAL CENTER
146 METLARS LANE, PISCATAWAY, NJ
The conference, “COURAGEOUS: Do Not Conform to
the Standards of this Age (Rom12:2)”, is designed to
provide young adults with an opportunity to experience
the presence of God, grow in their knowledge of the
faith, and celebrate their Catholic identity.
The retreat begins at dinner on Friday night and ends
after lunch on Sunday. If the weekend of February 2123 is not convenient for you, other retreats for Men,
Women, or both are also available on other weekends
through May 30. For further information and
registration, please call Ed Delaney at 201-768-9474 or
go to www.loyola.org
Workshop topics include: “Single? No Problem!”;
“Faith Is Sweaty;” “Don’t Stress, Be Blessed;” “Building
Community With Peers.” To register or for more
information, visit www.diometuchin.org/

IS JESUS CALLING ME?
OPEN HOUSE
Not every man is called to the Priesthood, but every
man should ask the question of himself and of God. “Be
brave, ask Him!!!” says Pope Francis. “Young people of
Newark and New Jersey, young Americans, the Lord needs
you! The Church needs you.” (Blessed Pope John Paul II at
Giants Stadium on October 5, 1995) Do you think you
may have heard the call? Feel free to talk to any of our
priests, or go to www.NewPriestNJ.com You can also
call the Office of Vocations at 973-313-6190 or email
[email protected]
