Sunday Bulletin - Bethany Lutheran

THE LORD IS GOD
Trinity Sunday
Bethany Lutheran Church | Port Orchard, WA
Evangelical Lutheran Synod
June 11, 2017
WELCOME TO WORSHIP
Welcome and thank you for joining us
for worship today! In our service we gather
before our almighty and saving God to offer
Him our worship and praise. We also assemble
to hear God’s holy and powerful Word and
celebrate His life-giving Sacraments. Through
these means, God strengthens our faith and
walks us ever closer to our eternal home with
Him.
YOUR PARTICIPATION IS ENCOURAGED
To participate in this service, just follow
along in this service folder. Lutheran worship is
specifically designed to include the participation
of the assembly. We are not here to be an
audience, we are here to speak and sing the
Word of God to each other. Parts marked P
are spoken by the pastor, and parts marked C
are spoken/sung by the congregation.
A NOTE ON COMMUNION
Bethany practices “close communion.”
Close communion is the biblical practice of
admitting to communion only members in good
standing of our congregation and those who are
completely united with the congregation in faith
and understanding.
Close communion protects those who do
not understand the danger of communing
without self-examination or without recognizing
the presence of the Lord’s body and blood with
the bread and wine, and preserves the intimate
unity expressed by communing with one another.
Therefore, we invite all members in good
standing of an Evangelical Lutheran Synod or
Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod
congregation to join in Holy Communion with us,
and we ask that all others please refrain and
speak to one of our pastors for more information
or if you are interested in joining our church.
Thank you for respecting our teachings.
Communicants, please remember to sign
the communion register.

OPENING PRAYER
Pastor: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to
hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the
preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and
death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ’s sake. Amen.
THE CONFESSION OF SINS
P:
Let us confess our sins to God and pray:
We poor sinners confess to You, O God, not only that we have been conceived and born
in sin, but also that throughout life we have often and in many ways offended You, our Lord and
Maker, in thought, word and deed, so that You could with perfect justice reject and condemn us
for all eternity. Therefore we come before You with sorrow of heart, in dread and terror of Your
holy justice and of everlasting death. Our sins are a grievous foe, which we should hate in every
way as long as we live. O merciful God, You still grant us in this hour to be reminded of Your
fatherly goodness. According to the promise of Your Word we flee for refuge to Your infinite
mercy, and implore You, dearest Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your only-begotten Son, our
Brother, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised again for our justification:
Forgive us all our sins through faith, which the Holy Spirit increases in our hearts to full
assurance.
C:
We therefore pray You, O Lord, through Your servant to declare to us the
forgiveness of all our sins. We poor sinners are willing to forgive all who have offended
against us. We earnestly desire to grow in true godliness. Help us, O God, for the sake of
Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
THE KYRIE ELEISON(LORD, HAVE MERCY):
THE ABSOLUTION:
P:
Hear the holy and comforting Word of our Lord:
4
P:
Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. For God so
loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish
but have everlasting life. Lift up your hearts! By the authority of God and of my holy office I forgive
you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO (GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST)
P:
Glory be to God in the highest
THE SALUTATION
P:
The Lord be with you.
THE COLLECT
P:
Almighty God, by Your grace alone we are called into Your kingdom, to confess the true
faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the divine majesty to
worship the true Unity: We beseech You, that You would keep us steadfast in this faith, and
evermore defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one
true God, now and forever.

EPISTLE LESSON
Romans 11:33-36 (ESV)
O
h, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His
judgments and how inscrutable His ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or
who has been His counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid?”
36
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.

GOSPEL LESSON
John 3:1-17 (ESV)
N
ow there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man
came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come
from God, for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus
answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of
God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second
time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless
one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of
the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you,
‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do
not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the
teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, We
speak of what We know, and bear witness to what We have seen, but you do not receive Our
testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell
you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except He who descended from
heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son
of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved
the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order
that the world might be saved through Him.

ATHANASIAN CREED
The Church’s Confession of the Holy Trinity
Early in the fourth century, a North African pastor named Arius began teaching that Jesus Christ was not
truly God. The Church responded decisively in A.D. 325 with a statement of faith (The Nicene Creed), which
confessed that Jesus is, in fact, truly God. Toward the end of the fifth century, another creed was written that delved
further into the mystery of the Trinity. Though attributed to Athanasius, a fourth-century opponent of Arius, this
anonymous creed clearly came at a later stage in the debate.
The Athanasian Creed proclaims that its teachings concerning the Holy Trinity and our Lord’s incarnation
are “the catholic faith.” “Catholic” here means “universal,” not a particular denomination. In other words, this is
what the true church of all times and all places has confessed. More than 15 centuries later, the church continues
to confess this truth, confident that the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has given Himself for our
salvation.
P:
Whoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic* faith. (*catholic, Universal)
C:
Which faith, except everyone keeps whole and undefiled, without doubt he will
perish eternally.
P:
And the catholic faith is this:
C:
That we worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, neither
confusing the persons nor dividing the substance.
P:
For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit.
C:
But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one: the
glory equal, the majesty coeternal.
P:
Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.
C:
The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated.
P:
The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit
incomprehensible.
C:
The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal.
P:
And yet there are not three eternals but one eternal.
C:
As there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensibles but one uncreated
and one incomprehensible.
P:
So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty.
C:
And yet they are not three almighties but one almighty.
P:
So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.
C:
And yet they are not three Gods but one God.
P:
So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord.
C:
And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord.
P:
For as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person by himself to
be both God and Lord,
C:
So we cannot by the catholic faith say that there are three Gods or three Lords.
P:
The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone,
not made nor created but begotten.
C:
The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor
begotten but proceeding.
P:
So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy
Spirits.
C:
And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another;
7
P:
But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal, so that in all things, as
has been said, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped.
C:
He, therefore, that will be saved is compelled thus to think of the Trinity.
P:
Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe faithfully the
incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
C:
For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son
of God, is God and man;
P:
God of the substance of the Father, begotten before all worlds; and man of the substance
of his mother, born in the world;
C:
Perfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting.
P:
Equal to the Father as touching his Godhead and inferior to the Father as touching his
manhood;
C:
Who, although he is God and man, yet he is not two but one Christ:
P:
One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh but by taking the manhood into God:
C:
One altogether, not by confusion of substance but by unity of person.
P:
For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ;
C:
Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from
the dead.
P:
He ascended into heaven, he sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from
whence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
C:
At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies and will give an account
of their own works.
P:
And they that have done good will go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil,
into everlasting fire.
C:
This is the catholic faith which, except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot
be saved.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON & SERMON TEXT
I Samuel 17:32-50 (ESV)
A
nd David said to Saul, “Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and
fight with this Philistine.” 33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this
Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from
his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when
there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after him and struck him
and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and
struck him and killed him. 36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this
uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living
God.” 37 And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw
of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the
LORD be with you!” 38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his
head and clothed him with a coat of mail, 39 and David strapped his sword over his armor. And
he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with
8
these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand
and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd's pouch. His sling
was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine. 41 And the Philistine moved forward and
came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. 42 And when the Philistine looked and
saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43 And
the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine
cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh
to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.” 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You
come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of
the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD
will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the
dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of
the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly
may know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the LORD's, and He will
give you into our hand.” 48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David,
David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his
bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank
into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine
with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the
hand of David.

THE GENERAL PREFACE FOR TRINITY
P:
It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; who with Your only-begotten Son and the
Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the confession of the only true God we worship the Trinity
in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty co-equal. Therefore with angels and archangels
and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising
You and saying:
THE SANCTUS (HOLY, HOLY, HOLY)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
P:
Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us
from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the pow’r and the glory forever and ever.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION
P:
Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He
had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: “Take, eat; this is My †body,
which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup
after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying; “Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New
Testament in My † blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do
as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
