PRESIDENTIAL PONDERINGS MARCH 2017
About fifteen years ago, my mother was entering the latter stages of her eight-year
struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. As a career professional in the area of aging services,
I had dealt with Alzheimer’s Disease for many years, so I knew what was coming…but it
didn’t make it any easier to experience. My mother no longer knew me by my name. She
recognized me as someone who cared about her, and for her, but the name she had given
me no longer meant anything to her.
Names are powerful in our culture. They define us, give us an identity separate from
others, and help others to recognize us. For all of those reasons, and more, it was not an
easy decision on the part of our LVBH Board of Directors to change our name. In truth, it has
been reported that there have been periodic discussions (at the Board level) about changing
the name for close to 30 years! So why change now?
In previous communications, I have discussed the drawbacks of the current name.
“Lebanon Valley” is geographically vague, and it is also confusing due to other businesses
that have a similar prefix. “Brethren” reflects our church tradition, which is appreciated by
our residents and prospects, but many folks mistakenly believe that you must be Brethren to
be admitted; that, of course, is not true, as only a little more than 20% of our residents have
faith roots in the Church of the Brethren. Our own research showed that our future
customers are looking to move to a faith-based retirement community, but they largely do
not care which Christian denomination is the sponsor.
The single most important reason, however, as to why we are switching to
“Londonderry Village,” this month, is the negative associations that folks have with the word
“Home”. It seems hard to believe, on one hand, because we continually strive to provide a
welcoming environment that has all the comforts and security of a home. However, using
the term “Home” in our name was perceived negatively due to the connotation of an
“old folks home.” Our Board and staff strongly feel that our “village” is anything but an old
folks home. Actually, there is very little “retiring’ going on in this ‘retirement community’!
Our residents are vibrant and active, with a strong sense of community and an even stronger
sense of service to others. That is our true identity, and that is why we feel that Londonderry
Village is a more appropriate name for this new and exciting era.
Thanks for Listening!
Jeff Shireman, President

years we have been taking groups of our residents to spend mornings,
two days a week (Mondays & Thursdays) at Layser's Greenhouse
helping with the tasks of prepping flowers and plants for the spring
season. Usually 8 to 12 residents take a short ride on our bus to the greenhouse for a fun morning
of activities. Upon returning to campus a voucher is given to each volunteer for lunch at the Café.
If you have never gone or have not been here long enough to have heard, please consider going
along on one of our trips.

individuals interested in becoming active on a committee titled “Nominating.”
This committee is looking for residents who enjoy talking with other residents

currently have a full slate of officers for the next two years so the committee will
be looking at upcoming needs. . All the positions on the ILC committees are a two

Convenience Store News
Hours: Monday—
Monday — Friday
10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
This month I’ m sharing a few thoughts about happenings on the Friday before this newsletter
deadline and I think they might interest you as our customers. Friday is the day I travel to Redners on
the Londonderry Village van. My purchase of approximately 18 half gallons of ice cream usually causes a
stir of comments at the checkout regarding perceived parties I hold. Upon my return I’m greeted by
Charlotte, our clerk for the day, who took time to provide a beautiful supply of large assorted muffins,
a new pecan coconut cookie, and a hearty supply of our popular filled Raisin Cookies. I managed to
sample each only for the sake of our customers, of course! By lunchtime, our talented shopper, Carroll,
had managed to surprise us with cases of navel oranges and I assure you, they are beautiful and enticing.
Shortly thereafter, the phone rang and I was informed our Easter Eggs would be delivered in a few days.
No, that was not all the activity that kept Barry, the clerks, and yours truly perking along. Our
assistant Janet returned with supplies for our household shelves and Shirley kept the wagon rolling on
her return with canned fruits and veggies. Upon closing, I scooted home to dream of a weekend of price
and date marking on all the welcome supplies with the hope of preparing next weeks shopping lists and
notices to keep you informed. One more important piece of interesting news...
Our veggie table will again be filled this summer by our ambitious Ramona who has agreed
to be the chairman again. Be sure to check her notices to keep abreast of the matured life span of our
generous neighborhood farmers seedlings.
...Betty Barteit
The “Veggie
Table” will soon open where fresh garden produce
will once again be available to serve our community.
Attention to those planting gardens: Please consider planting with the idea of sharing your bounty
with others through donations to “The Veggie Table” that is located in the Convenience Store.
Our Veggie Table volunteer will wash, prepare for sale, and display the donations on the Veggie
Table during the harvest season. Thanks for your donations.
(Please do not take your donations directly to the Convenience Store.)
Attention to those purchasing the veggies: Most items will be sold “by weight”. So look for the
‘red scales’ on the table. Select your veggies, weigh them, look at the price list for posted price,
deposit cash in the container provided. Some items will be individually priced. All proceeds from
the sale of the veggies are given to the GOOD SAMARITAN FUND. Bags for the veggies provided at
the table. The items that are available each day will be posted on the window of the door at the
Convenience Store and communicated on the Community TV. ENJOY the bounty!!

wonderful collection of Volunteer Movie Leader would love to share her movie classics with all living
in our community and hopes you will join us. Because the movies are from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and
70’s they do not have closed caption. You may want to give the movie a try even without closed
caption because of the high quality of the sound system in the new theater room.

(located across from the Di Matteo Worship Center)
Movie Title: Rebecca (1940)
Academy Award winner Best Picture with Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier. Based on the classic
book by Daphne du Maurier. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. A psychological thriller-mystery film.
Important Reminder : Emergency Information Form
As Londonderry Village continues to grow we need to provide tools to help share
information with the professionals who respond to our Life Line Call System. It is
beneficial for our Independent Living Residents to have a way to share their personal
medical summaries quickly and with ease during an emergency situation. We have
created a basic form for all emergency personnel to review when responding to a need at an
Independent Living residence. It is important to have easily accessible, current and concise
information on-hand so that general medical history can be provided to Healthcare Nursing Staff
and Emergency Responders. The form is to be completed by each individual resident. The
completed form will be displayed magnetically on the side of your refrigerator as a standard
easy-to-reach location in all IL residences. The forms will require periodic updates as health
conditions and medications change on an ongoing basis. Should you need an additional blank copy
of the Emergency Information Form they are available at two locations: the Independent Living
Nurse Coordinator Office and the Resident Services office. When emergency assistance is needed
you will be ready to provide the medical details by simply handing the form to the emergency
medical professionals. Keeping emergency information in a specific location allows you peace of
mind knowing you are prepared in an urgent situation. For questions or assistance in completing
your Emergency Information Form contact the Resident Services office at ext. 3186.
Prayer Time for Our Country — March 16
Some residents have requested that we continue to set aside a specific time to pray for
the leadership of our nation. We will continue to meet to pray for God’s grace and peace
for all the leaders of our nation. Specific political parties or policies will not be included
during our time of prayer. Join others in this time of prayer on the third Thursday of the
month at 1:30 p.m. in the Prayer Room. All residents are invited to join in this special time.

Residents Elsie and Janice took a leisurely stroll down the hallways leading to the
Seasons Restaurant for their evening meal together. Elsie and Janice shared that the dining special
that particular evening was a delightful Haddock with baked sweet potato and it was delicious!
The soup was a scrumptious vegetable with an unusual yummy creamy broth.
Wonderful! Calm, relaxing and happy are the feelings that described their dinner experience. Elsie
was so happy to be using her dining gift card… a surprise holiday gift from her children. Have YOU
