What Does It Mean to Follow Christ?

What Does It Mean to Follow Christ?
Join an East Brentwood Presbyterian Learning Circle where we seek to understand our
journey of faith and what is means to follow Christ. We will study Brian McLaren’s book,
We Make the Road By Walking: A Year-Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation,
and Activation, which offers spiritual seekers, ex-Christians, and long-time Christians from
diverse backgrounds a common understanding of what it means to follow Christ. In previous adult education classes, we have had amazing conversations as we have read
McLaren’s work and we expect this one to be the same.
Brian McLaren is considered one of the most prominent Christian leaders in America and
was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America in 2005. He is a popular speaker for campus groups, seminaries, and clergy and leadership conferences, nationally and internationally. His books and lectures cover a wide range
of topics including the gospel and global crises; theology and postmodernity; liturgy,
preaching and spiritual formation; evangelism and inter-religious dialogue; and faith and social justice.
Prominent church historian Phyllis Tickle has this to say about the book: “This is
one of the most remarkable documents in recent Christian writings… There is no
evangelizing here, and no preaching, only a sinewy, but orderly and open, presentation of the faith that holds. The result is as startling as it is beautiful.”
More about our six-week series:
Two weekly opportunities: We have two offerings during the week – one on
Sunday mornings and one of Wednesday evenings. Please join when it is
most convenient for you.
Learning Circle format: Brian McLaren’s book forms the basis of our conversation. Use the book for your own devotional reading at your leisure. Each
short chapter (4-6 pages) of the book begins with a Bible passage followed
by a short interpretation of this passage. At the end of each chapter are
engaging questions for you to ponder. We will use these questions to facilitate a group discussion.
Upcoming dates and schedule:
“I’ve written We Make the Road by
Walking to help individuals and groups
seize this moment and walk wisely and
joyfully into the future together… The
title suggests that faith was never intended to be a destination, a status, a
holding tank, or a warehouse. Instead,
it was to be a road, a path, a way out
of old and destructive patterns into
new and creative ones.”
