The Game
Fundamentals
The role of the scorer
„
Record the official netball score for each team
as it is scored.
„
Advises the umpires who has the Centre Pass
during the game – when asked.
„
Record any suspensions and/or ordering off that
may occur
The game officials are: Umpires,
Scorers, Time Keepers.
The Centre Pass
„
Throughout the game each team will have
an equal number of Centre Pass Offs.
The Toss
The two teams will toss a coin
and call either heads or tails
This is referred to as the TOSS
How to score a game - beginning
„
The winner of the coin ‘toss’ chooses between either
starting the game with the centre pass off or selecting the
goalpost to first shoot in.
„
The team that starts the game with the centre pass off
starts on EVENS.
„
The score is Nil at the start of a game, which is an EVEN
number.
The two teams will toss a coin

Write E for Evens on the scorecard next to the team who
is starting the game with the centre pass off.
„
Write O for ODDS on the scorecard next to the other
team.

There are two scorers from each team
but only one is the official scorer.
How to score a game - during
When a score is added:
„
A goal is scored only when it passes completely through
the goal ring.
„
The umpire will signal the goal is scored when they blow
the whistle and the game is reset for the next centre
pass off.
„
Cross the score off the card as it is scored.
The game is fast, record the
score as it happens

The umpire asks?
„ Who has the next pass? If the score is 5 to black
and 2 to white; because Black won the toss and
choose the pass they are EVENS…
„
5 + 2 add to 7; so what team is currently Odds?
White will have the next pass.
Always add the score together
then check the card and reward
the pass to the appropriate team
How to score a game – at quarter
At the end of each 10 minute quarter:
„
The team that starts as EVENS now changes to ODDS
and vice versa.
EXCEPT – it does not change if:
„
A goal is scored right on quarter time or the ball is still in
the centre’s hands when time is called.
Failure to follow this procedure will
result in one team having two
centre pass offs

„
If the ball is in PLAY when quarter time is called
CHANGE
EVENS to ODDS or vice versa
Think ‘change’ like loose change
because ball is in play

Next
You have sorted out EVENS and ODDS; what
next:
„
Circle each teams score at the end of quarter
„
Write the score in the score square
„
Advise the umpire who has first pass
Your score is the official score
so advise the umpires what the
score is each quarter and advise next pass.
End of Game
Know you have now done a GREAT job:
„
Again circle the score at the end of quarter
„
Write the score in the score square
„
Advise the umpire the final score and ask them to sign
the score card.
Congratulations you are now able to
be an official scorer. Well Done!
